Summer is the time to relax and unwind; reju-venate from the constant chaos of our daily lives. Although we still have a few weeks left of the “lazy days

of summer,” we’ll be back-to-school before we know it. It seems like the stores started

stocking school supplies within minutes of pulling the leftover July 4th sparklers off the shelves.

As we work through the school supply lists, buy new school clothes and get the school physicals done, our kids will soon realize that their summer school vacation is quickly coming to an end. They are starting to look forward to seeing their school friends again. On rare occasions, we might even catch them picking up a book on their own.

Before we know it, we will be getting back to our school-time routine with early morning carpool, after-school activities and evening sports practices. But, before that first day of school arrives, let’s enjoy the final days of summer break with our loved ones. Enjoy the beaches, the backyard pool, or a simple BBQ with friends, because soon enough we’ll be back-to-school, again!

Sincerely, Sven BudzischPublisher/Owner

community news

It is important for young children to learn about safety. for more than 30 years, the City of Pembroke Pines Police Department Community Affairs Unit’s “Puppet Brigade” has been reinforcing safety messages

through fun, interactive presentations at Pembroke Pines Day Care Centers and Elementary Schools.

The Puppet Brigade consists of PSA Cheryl Watters, Officer Clarence Wilson, Officer Valerie Toth and Officer Manny Salinas. They share the spotlight with pup-pets Officer Ollie, Fireman Frank, Peanut, Bandit, Reggie, Stan the Man, and Sally. Together, they make approximately 50 presentations throughout the year.

The one-hour puppet show is comprised of three short plays: Stranger Danger, Traffic Safety, and Stop Drop and Roll. Before and after each one, there is a group discussion about the topic. They talk about who is a stranger and why they should

never take a ride or candy from one. They review the importance of looking both ways when they cross a street and using a cross walk. They discuss fire safety tips.

“The presentations are geared to each age group and they are very entertain-ing,” said Officer Valerie Toth. “We use catchy songs to help them remember. The kids love it! It is another way for us to bridge the gap between police officers and kids, so they know they can trust us and come to us if they need help.”

The Pembroke Pines Police Department also offers a variety of other programs, including: car-seat installation checks, Explorer Program, police building tours, safety presentations for older children and adults on a variety of topics, Citizen’s Police Academy, Citizens Emergency Training, Career Days, bicycle safety rodeos, security surveys, business safety presentations, homeowner meetings, neighbor/neighborhood issues

To schedule the Puppet Brigade or to find out about other programs, call the Pembroke Pines Police Department at 954-436-3274.

community news

Mothers and fathers have their own special day. in Pembroke Pines, so do the children. On June 21, more than 1,000 children joined in the fun at the 4th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day.

The event was made possible by Mayor Frank C. Ortis, as well as 95 Pembroke Pines businesses that donated free food, sample gifts, and prizes for residents ages 15 and younger.

“Mayor Ortis wanted an event that would celebrate the children of Pembroke Pines and be a very memorable summer day for all of them,” said Francie Novo, Mayors Kids Day organizer and Pembroke Pines Special Events Coordinator. “By the look on the faces of the children, he was successful!”

Participants got a variety of things for free, including: activities at the Baptist Medical Plaza, cake from Publix, haircuts at Kaizen Beauty School, mini golf at All Golf, samples and prizes at Whole Foods, break-fast at IHOP, samples at Starbucks, swimming at the YMCA, toothbrush at Salgra Dental Group, tennis and golf clinics at Pembroke Lakes Golf, craft project at Studio 18, admission to play area to Rocket Kids, sam-ples of Jamba Juice, kids meal at Sweet Tomatoes, vision screening from For Eyes Optical, and more.

The kids also received a free lunch. They were greeted by a card-board stand up of Mayor Ortis (who was called away unexpectedly on City business), Commissioner Jay Schwartz, and eight sponsor charac-ters. Some of the kids also had an opportunity to step into the Bright Star Money Machine, which was filled with valuable prizes.

“Mayor’s Kids’ Day is a win-win for everyone,” said Novo. “The kids have fun all day. The parents don’t have to pay anything. The busi-nesses increase foot traffic and get some great exposure.”

For information or to become a sponsor for the 2014 5th Annual Mayor’s Kids’ Day, call 954-435-6525 or visit www.ppines.com.

Steve pressman, owner of the Pill Box Pharmacies & Medical Supply, received a Key to the City

during a recent City of Pembroke Pines Commission meeting. He has been giv-ing back to his hometown for decades, both personally and professionally.

“Steve Pressman is a generous individual who has volunteered not only his time and energy, but that of his family,” said Mayor Frank C. Ortis, who presented him with the key. “He has donated many, many thousands of dollars to support programs in our great city.”

Pressman grew up in Brooklyn with very little. He is proof that hard work can pay off. He moved to Pembroke Pines in 1982, when it was a still a small community, and never left.

“Although large in population, I still feel that Pembroke Pines is a family-ori-entated, small community,” said Steve.

“I am honored to receive the Key to the City and enjoy that my family and I can be actively involved in Pembroke Pines. I feel very lucky that I am able to help out in the community.”

Steve opened the first Pill Box Pharmacy in Pembroke Pines in 1985. He currently has three stores and plans to open a fourth. His goal has always

been to offer the ultimate customer service and a large selection of goods. If you are looking for some-thing, chances are that the Pill Box sells it. If not, they will order it.

Steve says that volunteering has always been important to him. “I’m working on my dash - you know that line between when you are born and when you pass away,” said Steve. He further explains that he is working on his legacy, “what will I leave behind that I can be proud of and what have I done to make the world a better place.”

He has supported the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System, the Southwest Focal Point Community Center and the Pembroke Pines Police Athletic League. F amilies and friends gathered through-out Pembroke Pines to honor the nation’s birth-day and celebrate Independence Day.

“It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves and celebrating America in our All-American city,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Frank C. Ortis.

Over 5,000 people attended the celebration at the Pines Recreation Center Festival Grounds, sponsored by the City of Pembroke Pines. Residents relaxed on blankets and lawn chairs, as they listened to the sounds of the Final Countdown Band, enjoyed some of their favorite treats from the Food Truck Round Up, and watched the spectacular fireworks show. There were also free rides and activities for the children.

“The celebration is an opportunity for friends, fami-lies, and neighbors to get together,” said Pembroke Pines Commissioner Carl Shechter, who enjoyed the event with his wife Anita. “It one of the many reasons that Pembroke Pines is such a great place to live.”

Over 500 people attended the Annual 4th of July Barbecue and Celebration at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center. The event was underwritten by the Senior Residence Advisory Board.

“Our members know how to celebrate the Fourth of July,” said Jay Shechter, Director of Community Services and Housing for the City of Pembroke Pines.

“It was an afternoon packed with great food, music and entertainment.”

Members arrived dressed in red, white, and

blue for the patriot contest. Gino GiaFranco sang the National Anthem. Members of Saint Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church Knights of Columbus Council # 11410 grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. The Friends of Hollybrook, students from the Pembroke Pines Charter High School, and Center volunteers served the food. The Site Council held a raffle. Commissioner Shechter served sodas and greeted members, includ-ing America Perez, who was named by her parents after they immigrated to America 50 plus years ago.

Last month, first responders in pembroke pines were dis-patched to a structural collapse, with approximately 30 injured patients who required triage, treatment, and transport. Some of the victims could be

heard screaming in pain or calling out for loved ones that were lost. Fortunately, it was all part of a planned Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) at the Broward Fire Academy. Several mutual aid agencies participated in the drill, including Pembroke Pines, Davie (host), Plantation, Sunrise, Lauderhill, and Southwest Ranches.

“If there is ever an incident of this magnitude, there is a good chance that we will all be working together,” said Al DiLiello, Division Chief for the Pembroke Pines Fire/Rescue. “After the drill, we will evaluate what we did well and what we should do differently. We are always looking for ways to improve and become bet-

ter prepared.”An assortment of live victims and manikins were used to simulate injuries and

entrapment. Since Davie Fire Rescue was the host, they were the first to arrive on the scene. They were responsible for identifying the extent of the victims’ injuries and tagging them appropriately.

Pembroke Pines Fire/Rescue and other participants waited in a staging area down the street until Davie Fire Rescue called for help. They made sure that their response time was based on how long it would actually take them to reach the scene. Once they arrived, they loaded the critically injured into their vehicles. In a real emergency, the next step would have been to transport them to area hospitals.

tAg UsA gymnastics wins its first national Championship

If you want to be the best, you need to train with the best. That’s why so many young gymnasts

are joining TAG USA Gymnastics in Weston. Owners Marissa and Michael Zoldan have created structured classes for beginners through advanced gymnasts, built the largest and most comfortable facility around, and added the best equipment to distinguish TAG USA Gymnastics as one of South

Florida’s top gymnastic studios. Even more impressive than the gym itself, is TAG USA Gymnastics’ incredible

success. It has won back-to-back State Championships in Gymnastics and, most recently, took home its first National Championship in Trampoline.

The 2013 USAG Trampoline & Tumbling Championships were held July 3rd through 10th in Kansas City, Missouri. Hundreds of trampoline and tumbling ath-letes from around the country competed for “Best in the Nation” honors. To qualify for the National Championships, an athlete must successfully compete in local competitions and excel in state and regional championships

TAG USA Gymnastics’ Hannah Zoldan, age 10, scored a 61.3 on Double Mini Trampoline to earn a First Place finish at the National Championships. She finished first among the nation’s top athletes competing in Double Mini Trampoline at the championships and was the only first place National Champion from South Florida.

Hannah began her athletic career as a competitive gymnast, but switched to the Trampoline and Tumbling Team two years ago. In both the 2012 and 2013 com-petition seasons, Hannah was Florida State Champion in Trampoline and Double Mini Trampoline events. This was her second trip to the National Championships.

TAG USA Gymnastics took eight athletes to Nationals. All of them finished among the top fifteen national competitors in at least one event. Jessica Hert, age 14, finished in 4th place nationally in the Trampoline event and Stone Lyons, age 12, finished 5th in Trampoline. The other TAG USA team athletes who competed at

Nationals included Maria Mendoza, Sofia Mendoza, Katherine Sanford, Alessandra Longo, and Peyton Terris.

TAG USA owners Michael and Marissa Zoldan, as well as the gym’s coaching staff, are ecstatic with the fantastic results of their athletes. According to Michael, “All of their dedication and hard work was rewarded with their competitive success.”

This National Championship win is further proof of TAG USA Gymnastics’ success. Its girls and boys gymnastics teams had two stellar seasons at the State Championships. In 2011 and 2012, TAG USA won the Florida State Championships for USAG Level 3 and Level 4 girls gym-nastics. TAG USA also won the 2012 State Championship for USAG Prep-Optionals with five members selected to Team Florida. The boys team has been equally successful. In addition to many individual State and

Bargain hunters from near and far are expected to meet at the Southwest Focal Point Community Center in Pembroke Pines for the Flea Market and Bazaar. They will have an opportu-

nity to search through tables of treasures from over 100 venders in an indoor, air conditioned room. The event will be held on August 24, from 8am to 3pm, and August 25, from 9am to 3pm. Admission and parking are free.

There will be thousands of household items, toys, clothing, jewelry, record albums, baseball cards, tea pots, baby blankets and much more. There will also be food available in the Paradise Café. Buyers are encouraged to come early, since a large crowd of people always forms before the doors open. Most know what they are looking for and want to be the first to find it.

Karen Kramer of Pembroke Pines brings her two boys every year. “My sons search for old baseball cards, while I look for clothing and jewelry,”

said Karen. “There are always so many great bargains. It is nice to be able to attend a flea market in the cool indoors instead of outside in the heat.”

The Flea Market and Bazaar is held several times a year and raises funds for programs at the SWFP Community Center. The Center offers trips and special events on a regular basis including self-improve-ment classes, educational classes, health classes and support programs presented by area professionals. It is a place to meet people, build a support network, find information, or simply read a book and shoot pool. Membership for adults 18 and older is free, but required.

The Southwest Focal Point Community Center is located at 301 NW 103rd Avenue, in Pembroke Pines. For information, call 954-450-6888 or visit www.ppines.com, click on departments and select community services.

When students in two third-grade classes at the Pembroke Pines Elementary walk down the aisles at Publix, they will now have a

better understanding of what it takes to get the food on the shelves. They recently took a field trip to Publix, as part of Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW), a program designed to connect a student’s classroom learning to their future in the work place. KAPOW’s lessons help students discover different jobs, what it takes to do them, and how to be successful in work and life.

The KAPOW program has been educating the children of Pembroke Pines with real life, hands-on experiences since 2001. The program introduces students to career awareness through seven one-hour professionally developed lessons taught by business volunteers in the classroom and culminates with a visit to the workplace. Each of the five 3rd grade classes at Pembroke Pines Elementary had different KAPOW volunteers.

“Students need to see that school is relevant to their lives, as well as the vision they have for their futures,” said John Casbarro, who coordinates the KAPOW pro-gram in South Florida. “KAPOW answers the questions that they are always ask-ing, such as ‘Why do I have to learn this?’ and ‘What good will this do for me?’ The volunteers motivate the students by sharing their life work and life experiences. They show them that everything they learn in school is important and valuable in order to succeed in work and life.”

Throughout the school year, volunteer and Publix employee Christina Curry met with students in Barbara Sibble’s 3rd grade classes to teach them about the importance of community involvement, leadership, communication and teamwork. She used hands-on fun activities to involve the children and keep them interested.

Sibble says that the kids always looked forward to her visits. “Christina has been a great role model,” said Sibble. “The children go to school every day to

learn reading, writ-ing, math, and other subjects. She helps them understand how they will use these skills in the workplace.”

For the last KAPOW lesson, students from Sibble’s class, along with Yvonne Spector’s class, took a field trip to Publix to learn more about Curry’s workplace. In the produce section, they learned all about the different fruits and vegetables. In the bakery, they learned how to weigh flour, as well as how to bake and decorate a cake. They also got to decorate their own cookies. In the meat department, they learned how to cut meat. At the end of the visit, they had a chance to scan items at the register, give change and hand customers their receipts.

“The kids had a great time on the field trip and learned a lot,” said Sibble. “They saw how the employees work independently and as a team. They have a better understanding of what is expected in a job. They also identified some of their own talents and interests.”

KAPOW is always looking for business or individual volunteers, as well as schools interested in participat-ing in the program. For information, visit www.kapowlfs.org; send an email to [email protected] or call 954-680-3916.

It is true that for many years braces have been as strongly associated with adolescents as acne. However, this has been changing dramatically. In 2010, the American

Association of Orthodontics reported that the percentage of adults being treated with orthodontics has increased to 22 % nationally. This is a 50% increase from a similar study done in the mid 1990’s.

One factor which seems to be responsible for this upswing in adult orthodontic treatment is an increase in cosmetic

options. The size of braces, even the metal braces, has decreased significantly. Tooth colored braces have been around for a long time, but have had the poor reputation of staining. With advancements in materials, this is no longer a con-cern. Clear aligners, used increasingly in recent years, have brought another option for adults hoping to hide their treatment.

Another factor which seems to have affected the rate of adult orthodontics is self perception. When I turned 25 years old, I remember hearing for the first time that “30 was the new 20.” It was very inspiring to know that as I approached 30 I was actually getting younger. Ten years later, I was lucky enough to discover that “40 is the new 30.”

This general optimism in aging has brought with it a new industry of “wellness.” Magazines have been created that are dedicated to health at various stages of life. Doctors espousing the “truth” about longevity have taken over prime time television. Plastic surgeons have plas-tered local advertising with new technologies that turn back the effects of time. From the dental industry, we have seen whitening material become an over the counter item. In my field of orthodontics, Align Technology, the parent company of

“Invisalign,” has poured millions of Wall Street dollars into marketing campaigns targeting adult patients.

Should age be a factor in the decision to start orthodontic treatment? Absolutely not. In my opinion, there are both advantages as well as challenges with treatment of every age group. Treatment of the teen age population has the benefit of growth. We are able to accomplish some goals which would not be pos-sible with adults without the use of jaw surgery. However, hygiene and motivation can become compromised very quickly. Adults, on the other hand, are usually very motivated as they have truly considered the sacrifice of time and finances before starting treatment. Still, treatment time for some adults tends to be longer. Some of the reasons for an increased length of treatment time include: the need to open or close spaces for missing teeth, higher or lower density of bone, and a decreased level of bone support due to a history of gum disease.

The most important part of any treatment, regardless of age, is the proper diagnosis of all related conditions of the mouth. This may require input from the dentist, periodontist (gum specialist), or other dental specialist. Once this is accomplished, the orthodontist can create a realistic treatment plan using the orthodontic appliance, whether it be braces or clear aligners, which can accom-plish these goals.

In short, I like to prescribe to my own philosophy that one is only as old as one feels. If you want to improve your smile and have teeth that fit together comfort-ably, then you should certainly consider orthodontic treatment.

I can always count on a prospective client ask-ing me the following two questions at their initial consulta-tion. How long will my divorce take? How much will it cost?In reality, the answer to the second question is directly

related to the answer to first question. Since attorney’s fees for divorce cases are based upon time spent by the attorney, the cost will vary from case to case. The more complex the case, the longer it usually takes and, therefore. the more it will cost. The more litigation in a case, the more time it will take and, therefore,

the more it will cost.I often tell a client that how quickly a case gets resolved is really up to them.

The quicker they can reach an agreement, the quicker they can be divorced. Once an agreement is signed by the parties, it is literally a matter of weeks until a Final Judgement granting the divorce can be issued by a Judge. However, what if there is not a quick settlement? What if there are issues which need to be litigated? How long can someone expect a divorce to continue until they get to a final resolution? Unfortunately, sometimes the answers to these questions are not in the control of the attorney. In addition, Florida law provides for certain dead-lines, which must be followed.

When a Petition for Dissolution is filed (the original document), it is usually served upon the other spouse. This process can take a week or more depending on a number of factors, such as the process servers’ ability to locate the indi-vidual. The Florida Courts have recently converted to E-filing and this has also caused a delay in receiving documentation back from the Clerk’s Office. Once served, the spouse has twenty days to respond in writing. If the response con-tains a counter-petition, then another 20 days will be allowed for a subsequent response. At this point, the case is considered to be “at issue” and all initial pleadings have been filed. This is just the beginning stages and already approxi-mately 6 weeks have passed.

If we need time to litigate any temporary issues, it could be weeks or months before we can obtain a court date. Judge’s dockets are full and it is simply a matter of first come, first served for a court date. No matter how much an attorney tries to get an earlier court date, the Judge only has a limited amount of time, due to his/her heavy caseload.

So when I am asked, “Why is it taking so long?” I try my best to explain the various factors which cause delay. It is often times frustrating to me, I can only imagine how frustrating it is for the client.

Demand for homes nationwide and, in particu-lar, South Florida continues to remain strong. Buyers are rushing to purchase properties before home prices are

not affordable. Leading this eccentric buying frenzy are cash transactions by international buyers, along with Wall Street hedge funds/Investment firms who are taking advantage of the current opportunity. This segment of buyers is a large part of the reason that we are now experiencing an astounding 18%-20% appreciation rate in most areas of South Florida.

This shrinking supply of homes for sale continues to create havoc for buyers and has placed many at the mercy of sellers. Buyers literally have very little time to view and make offers on newly listed homes for sale. The thought of viewing a home and then wanting time to think about making an offer are long gone.

Many of the properties attract bidding wars! Sellers are, without a doubt, in control and many times accept all cash offers at asking price or above that waive contingencies fort appraisals and/or inspections. This, in turn, creates a burden on buyers who rely on lender financing and are in need of a seller’s assistance in the form of a monetary credit towards their closing costs. Most recently, circum-stances whereby sellers have been willing to assist buyers with closing costs have been almost non-existent.

Escalating home prices combined with rising mortgage interest rates have created a greater urgency to buy now. The tendency in these situations is for people, both buyers and sellers, to become irrational. Sellers tend to ask more for the properties than the property is worth. Buyers, on the other hand, seem to give in to the price demand. The encouraging news is that prices are still moderate; mortgage rates are still low, hovering around 4% for a 30-year fixed loan; and it’s still a great time to buy in South Florida!

This scenario brings back harsh memories of the 2005 housing era. The major difference is that back then creative financing in the mortgage lending industry was more prominent. The present infrastructure is much stronger, because a large percentage of sales are cash transactions. This element alone will make a huge difference when this market cycle begins to settle down. The market, like almost everything in life, is cyclical, so at some point in the near future it’s going to change. Leading indicators abound that can cause us to speculate, but we just don’t know exactly when.

After a two year effort, florida legislators approved a new foreclosure law that significantly affects the rights of homeowners strug-gling to pay their mortgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic

recovery,” Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is overturned by the courts, it is expected to have a pro-found impact on the foreclosure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations.

The new law permits a lender or its servicer to file a foreclosure action and instead of being required to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shifts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessary evidence, a final judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the property could be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non-paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process.

For homeowners that are behind on their mortgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre-foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember that you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the party suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered BEFORE the foreclo-sure process starts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home.

The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to file an action for damages against the lender or other party that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their attorneys. For those homeowners currently in foreclosure, it is critically important that any mistakes in the process be identified and brought to the attention of the court BEFORE a final judgment.

In short, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more home-owners into bankruptcy as the only reliable means of saving their home.

More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumer-friendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for purchase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team.

The term comes from the greek words gyne meaning “woman” and mastos meaning “breast.” In practical terms, this means abnormally large breasts on

men. The condition is relatively common in adolescent boys, and 90% of the time symptoms disappear in a matter of months, or as adolescence wanes, a few years later. But the remain-ing 10% are burdened with a social handicap that can cause shame, lowered self-esteem and confidence.

There are many potential causes including puberty, ste-roid abuse, obesity, marijuana use, side effects of medicine, and certain genetic diseases. Gynecomastia can be emotionally devastating. A man or boy with gynecomastia struggles with anxiety over such simple acts as taking off his shirt at the beach. In cases of obesity, weight loss can alter the gynecomastic condi-tion, but for many it may not totally eliminate it. For all other causes, surgery is the only known physical remedy, and often the best solution. Once the contour of the chest is restored to normal, the patient can begin to feel more confident and self-assured with his physical body image.

Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mam-maplasty, and reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may be reduced. The procedure can be performed under intrave-nous sedation or general anesthesia depending on each individual’s medical condition.

In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, lipo-suction techniques alone may be used. There are various liposuction techniques that may be used; the technique most appropriate in your case will be defined prior to your procedure.

Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced, or the nipple repositioned to a more natural male contour. Incision patterns vary depending on the specific conditions and surgical preference.

Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision. Any surgical treatment to correct gynecomastia will require incisions. While most inci-sion lines are concealed within natural contours, some may be visible and are a necessary result of breast reduction surgery.

After surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to your incisions and an elastic bandage or support garment may be used to minimize swelling and sup-port your new chest contour as it heals.

The procedure duration is typically one to two hours and most men are able to return to work within 4 to 5 days depending on how much lifting is required.

Your heart is only the size of your fist, but it is the strongest muscle in your body. It’s your body’s engine, and it deserves to be taken care of. Many people don’t realize that they are not living a healthy heart life. Learning the risks of heart disease can help you be your own heart health advocate. What are the risk factors for heart disease? An estimated 17.1 million people die of cardiovascular diseases every year, according to the World Heart Federation. There are many risk factors that contribute to the development of heart disease. It is important to know that some risk factors, called “non-modifiable risk factors,” cannot be changed, but some risk factors, called “modifiable risk factors,” can be controlled or treated. The more risk factors you have, the greater your chance of developing heart disease. And higher levels of each risk factor correlate with a higher risk for heart disease.

Modifiable risk factorsHypertension is the single biggest risk factor for stroke. It also plays a significant role in heart attacks. It can be prevented and successfully treated, but only if you have it diagnosed and stick to your recommended management plan.

Abnormal blood lipid levels, which is high total cholesterol, high levels of triglycerides, high levels of low-density lipoprotein or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, all increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Changing to a healthy diet, exercise and medication can modify your blood lipid profile.

Tobacco use, either smoking or chewing tobacco, increases risks of heart disease. The risk is especially high if you started smoking when young, smoke heavily or are a woman. Stopping tobacco use can reduce your risk of heart disease significantly, no matter how long you have smoked. Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke increase their risk of heart disease as well.

Physical inactivity increases the risk of heart disease and stroke by 50%. People who don’t exercise regularly are 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease. That’s why exercise is such an important part of a heart healthy lifestyle.

Obesity or being overweight, especially if a lot of weight is located in your waist area, increases your risk for health problems, including high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Type II diabetes is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. Having diabetes makes you twice as likely as someone who does not, to develop heart disease. If you do not control diabetes then you are more likely to develop heart disease at an earlier age than other people, and it will be more devastating. If you are a pre-menopausal woman, your diabetes cancels out the protective effect of estrogen and your risk of heart disease rises significantly.

Get Heart SmartWhat can you do you improve your heart health?Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to your doctor about the ones that apply to you. Take action by changing your lifestyle, and work to prevent your modifiable risk factors from compromising your heart health.

One of the most difficult things that Orthopedic Surgeons have to deal with is what to do with the knee that has irreversible cartilage damage.

The knee joint, specifically the undersurface of the patella, the end of the femur and the top of the tibia are covered by a substance we call articular cartilage. This looks and functions like the carpet that is covering the floor in your house. It is a smooth cushioned surface that helps the knee joint move in a frictionless environment. Without healthy articular cartilage the

knee joint can not function properly. Exposed bone in the knee joint by deficient, inefficient cartilage leads to arthritis, pain and disability.

Patients present to the office stating that they injured the knee joint. They com-plain of swelling, pain going up and down stairs, getting out of the car, chang-ing directions, unable to run or jog without pain. The injury is usually after an event that the patient can recall without any problems. The Orthopedic Surgeon gets some simple X-Rays in the office and usually they are normal. You see, articular cartilage does not show up in X-rays. After a thorough physical exam the initial treatment usually consists of ice, rest, anti-inflammatory medica-tions and physical therapy. However, if the initial physical exam demonstrates severe findings or the symptoms persist or they do not resolve, then the patient will need to get an MRI Scan to check for articular cartilage problems. The MRI Scan is the diagnostic study of choice in the detection of articular cartilage dam-age (botton photo), meniscus tears and ligament injuries.

If the patient has an articular cartilage defect (bottom photo) this is considered to be a permanent problem for the knee joint. This leads to abnor-mal friction forces, inflammation, pain and eventual destruction of the rest of the knee joint. Classically, patients who continued to have problems eventually developed arthritis and required a total knee replacement. Today, with advances in science, we can offer patients alterna-tives to try to salvage the knee joint. This consists of procedures that can be done through small incisions in the knee joint (Arthroscopic Surgery).

The arthroscope is the instrument that has allowed us to manage this issue through small incisions. We can do a chondroplasty with shaving, chondroplasty micro fracture or bone drilling or bone picking. The chondroplasty is stimulating your cartilage, stimulating your body to make new cartilage in the defective area. The recovery from this type of surgery usually requires the patient to use crutches for one month and in most cases the patient returns to full unrestricted sports activities in six to nine months from the day of the surgery.

Other patients can have a transplant of cartilage (top photo). This is usually reserved for those patients who failed to heal with the chondroplasty and have a focal well circumscribe defect in the articular cartilage. The surgery is also done through mini incisions, usually two or three. The rehabilitation consists of crutches for four to six weeks and range of motion exercises. After this healing period, the patient returns to activities of daily living and finally to sports within six to nine months from the day of the surgery.

Can you believe it? hurricane season is upon us once again. Are you prepared?

Now is the time to make sure that all of those overgrown trees and bushes are trimmed. You are personally responsible for the first 72 hours after the storm, so stock up with lanterns, batteries, water, and non-perishable food.

When Hurricane Wilma hit, we had everything cleaned up in two weeks. Depending on the severity of the storm, we will do our best to get our lives back to normal. Remember, extra oxy-

gen if you are a user and extra medication. Be sure to get your generator cleaned up and working.

Hurricane preparedness is essential to all of us living in South Florida. It means that you and I need to stock up and prepare for 72 hours of self-help. Immediately after a hurricane, the City may not be able to get out in the communi-ties right away. This is why we ask that you prepare yourself, your home, and your family for a hurricane.

Our combination of experts, which includes our Police and Fire departments, public works, the hospitals, and Florida Power & Light, are consistent in their discussions with homeowners and business owners outlining and detailing what every resident and business owner must do in the event of a hurricane.

The City of Pembroke Pines has an emergency radio station 1670 AM that is operating currently with regular programming. In the event of an emergency, 1670 AM will be a major operational component in our efforts to communicate as widely as possible to residents in our community. I would suggest that you tag this radio station in your list of favorites.

Many of the supermarkets, as well as some of the gas stations, now have emergency generators to help them stay open for business so they can continue to serve the community and prevent the kind of chaos we had in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma. The City will be prepared to help once the 72 hours are over. We have been practicing our preparation strategies to make sure that we are ready.

So as a final suggestion, prepare now and store it. If you do not need it for an emergency, you can always use it in your daily lives.

For additional information go to the City of Pembroke Pines website at www.ppines.com, click on the A-Z Services link along the top of the screen to open up a directory. Scroll down and look under H for

“Hurricane Preparedness.” www.ppines.com/weather/index.html. This link also contains additional links to county, state and federal resources.
