A medieval romance is basically a story about a tale of high adventure

The seven characteristics of a medieval romance are:

Chivalry

A hero and his noble-deeds

Love of a lady

A Vague setting

Mystery and Suspense

Hidden Identity

The Magic Number 3

WHAT IS A MEDIEVAL ROMANCE?

• The first characteristic of romance is that the story

idealizes chivalry.• Harry shows chivalry many

times throughout the series. One example is in the seventh book when

Harry goes into the forest to face Voldemort to

prevent anymore people from dying

*The seventh book is called Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

• A medieval romance also idealizes a hero-knight

and his noble deeds• The noble deeds done by

Harry include saving the Sorcerer's Stone, saving Ginny from the Chamber

of Secrets, defeating Voldemort…quite a few times, and saving the

Wizarding World

• An element in all romances is a knight that has the love of a

lady• In the books, Harry has

the love of two girls: Ginny Weasley and Cho

• In the setting of a medieval romance, it is

usually very vague and/or imaginary

• Though we know Hogwarts is in England,

no one knows exactly where it is in England.

• We also know that one of only way to get to

Hogwarts is from the Hogwarts Express

• Each romance usually has mysteries and

suspense from supernatural elements

• Throughout the entire series there is

supernatural events. From magic wands, to

spells, to ghosts, to hats that can talk, and many more the supernatural is

everywhere

• The romances uses hidden or disguised identity

• Throughout the books there is hidden identity, but the most memorable one was how Barty Crouch Jr. used

polyjuice potion to disguise himself as Mad-Eye Moody,

the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor in the fourth

book.

*The Fourth book is called Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

• The number 3 is often repeated throughout

the story• Harry Potter has two best friends, creating a

trio• In the fourth book,

there is a Triwizard Tournament where three students, each from three different

schools compete for the championship.

1. He has a mysterious birth-The reader does not know when or how Harry was born, they only meet him when he is being brought to the Dursley’s home

2. He is away from his real parents- Both of Harry’s parents are killed when he was just a baby

3. His true identity was unknown for 11 years- Harry did not know he was a wizard or what really happened to his

parents until Hagrid came to bring him to Hogwarts

4. He claims his rights after a challenge- After defeating Voldemort, Harry claims his right to free the

Wizarding World of evil

5. His triumph benefits the Wizarding World

WHY IS HARRY CONSIDERED A HERO-KNIGHT?
