    INTRODUCTION

    Mechanical workshop, N.E Railway Gorakhpur is aleading industrial; unit in the field of periodical overhaulof rolling stock.

    This workshop was established in 1903 and was namedas Bengal and Assam North west Railway LOCO andcarriage board gauge coaches were also taken up.

    The workshop is spread over in an area 29.8 hectare outof which covered space is 12.6 hectares (42.8%).

    HISTORY

    The history of rail transport in India began in the mid-

    nineteenth century. In 1849, there was not a single

    kilometre of railway line in India.

    The Allahabad-Jabalpur branch line of the East Indian

    Railway had been opened in June 1867.

    BRAKE SYSTEM

    VACCUM BRAKE

    An engine creates the vacuum, which istransferred to the Bogies by hose pipe. Proper

    vacuum is maintained through the system. If the

    vacuum pressure exceeds from the prescribed

    limit, the brakes are applied.
