Biomedical waste management and handling rules 1998(amended in 2000)

• These rules apply to all persons who generate, collect, receive, store, transport, treat, dispose or handle biomedical waste in any form. All institutions generating biomedical waste must take all steps to ensure that such waste is handled without any adverse effect to human health and the environment

Penalties as per rule

• The penalties as per specified in Environment protection act 1986

• Imprisoned up to 5 years with fine up to one lakh rupees or both

• In case of failure additional Rs 5000 everyday

• CDC estimates that 1,144,500 persons aged 13 years and older are living with HIV infection, including 180,900 (15.8%) who are unaware of their infection

• More than 2 000 million people alive today have been infected with HBV at some time in their lives. Of these, about 350 million remain infected chronically and become carriers of the virus.

• An estimated 150–200 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis C
