Evacuation signage and Loma gate

• In 2008, Cal Fire developed an emergency evacuation plane for Palomar Park using four emergency routes

• Three of the four routes use non-county roads and require the passage route locked gates

• One of the routes (Loma gate) is limited to able body foot traffic due to non-passable curbing –

• Not usable by vehicles nor handicap accessible

• None of the routes are marked• Worst 3 of them state that the road is “Not a Through Street”• One road is truly a “Dead End” is not marked as such

Page 14: PPO General Meeting April 28, 2009. Agenda Introduction of the board (5 minutes) Treasurer’s Report (5 minutes) Website update (20 minutes) Roadwork update.

Loma gate Issues• Loma Gate is broken beyond repair• Drainage curb is too high to allow vehicles to pass• Current evacuation plan designates this exit route is foot traffic only• But

– Getting to the exit requires walking up a very steep road, which many of the older or handicap residents may not be able to do

– The end of Loma RD and the gate are not passable by a handicap person – Once at the gate, there is not means to get to the evacuation center

• Soil beyond gate is not compacted in old slide area and is not recommended for vehicle traffic

Proposed Recommendation• Replace Loma Gate with a locked gate that allows foot traffic to pass • Fix Drainage issue from Loma Road• Fix curb and pavement to allow wheelchair access• Review soils report to see if vehicles could use it in an emergency.

What makes Palomar Park UniqueTo understand how an issue will impact Palomar Park, we need to better

understand what makes Palomar Park unique

• The PPO board needs your help to answers four questions:– What makes Palomar Park unique and what we need to preserve as

a community?– What defines us as Palomar Park vs San Carlos or Redwood City?– What concerns do we have a community that need to be address

over the next 5, 10 years?– How are the answers to the above the same or different from the

various parts of Palomar Park?

• Please contact Kurt Oppenheimer at [email protected] or 430-2566 if you would like to be part of the team

• OR send us input on the four question, please email these questions to [email protected]
