Guest Speakers

Sterling from non-profit organization DuMyon Martial Arts for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities – shared success stories of individuals with disabilities. DuMyon (Korean language) means uncommon, or rare. DuMyon focuses on groups/organizations rather than individual participation. Written tests are part of the course. The written component focuses on individuals’ needs. DuMyon Martial Arts requests fund raising ideas and opportunities. DuMyon has offered classes in conjunction with The ARC and Pikes Peak

Library District. Maintains partnerships with TRE, The ARC, Pikes Peak Library District and Mosaic. Really enjoys teaching self-defense classes. Distributed cards and flyers.Amanda Thomas - Mosaic Associate Director - New customized employment service began in July 2015. The model is a piggy back of the supported employment model. Person-centered services are the focus: what are the individuals’ passions, skill sets? The Discovery process encompasses activity based assessments to narrow down 3 employment themes. Potential job carving situations are proposed. Community Action Team and community members’ informational interviews connect Mosaic with potential employment sites. Currently, only working with individuals that participated in the pilot program. SLS and EBD waivers as well as payment from School Districts will be options.

Best Buddies - John Jordan - Basic foundation of Best Buddies: pairing up a typically developing peer with an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities. There are currently 1800 chapters around the world. 800 schools in Colorado are involved. The other two primary focal points of Best Buddies are Integrated Employment and Leadership Development. [email protected] There are middle school, high school and college-aged programs. Pairs are required to talk once per week. Pairs must

participate one on one in two activities/events per month.

JJ Ryan - Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind -looking for community-based non-profit volunteer opportunities.

Regina DiPadova - Cheyenne Village - Pikes Peak Region on Autism Resources: committee that services individuals with autism. Purposes: to get the word out about autism and teach parents what resources are available for individuals with autism. Southern Colorado Regional Respite Coalition: focuses on outreach opportunities and getting the word out about respite and locations. Cheyenne Village offers an outreach program that provides recreation, caregiver respite and service coordination for Pikes Peak Region adults with developmental disabilities 18 years and older who are not receiving government funding services, and who live alone or with family caregivers.

Hannah Widmer – The ARC - grant is being sought for inclusive community participation curriculum and activities for teens and young adults with disabilities, and siblings of individuals with disabilities. Searching for allied agencies. Community input needed: recruitment, building space, transportation issues. Any community

agencies that want to assist 6 weeks: June 13- July 20: contact The Arc . Upcoming fundraising Chasing Santa event flyer.

Therapeutic Rec – Felicia – Reminder: 3rd Friday of every month: sponsors a dance at The Senior Center for individuals with disabilities. $5 cover charge. Caregivers welcome with no charge. The Ability Expo for Arts and Culture will be held on 12/10/2015 - focus is on Painting in the Parks showcase.
