Technical Recommendation Cleaning and Maintenance of Delfleet Paint films in the Commercial Vehicle market

Background For Commercial Vehicle coatings, the durability and resistance to aggressive climate conditions are key requirements.

PPG provides high performance Commercial Vehicle paint systems that are able to cope with the toughest of environmental conditions. Even so, as for any coating system, the vehicle owner will need to take appropriate care in maintaining the condition of the paint film to maintain a high quality appearance and image over the life of the vehicle. Part of this requirement is the need to clean the paintwork regularly. This document has been created with this in mind, and provides guidance and recommendations for the use of commercially available cleaners with PPG Delfleet Premium UHS paint systems.

Description When a vehicle is painted in a PPG Delfleet paint system, you can be sure that the quality of the paint film is excellent and will remain so for the life of the vehicle if maintained properly. The PPG Delfleet brand delivers the most efficient process at the highest level of quality for the Commercial Vehicle market. Delfleet UHS is a two component acrylic polyurethane paint system, produced in conformity with the Paint Product VOC Directive (PPD), and provides outstanding gloss, superior appearance and durability, with a high level of colour accuracy. When completely cured, Delfleet UHS provides excellent chemical resistance.

Note: Commercial washes, high pressure washes, and use of strong detergents, should not be used during the first 30 days after application of the paint film. The use of aqueous detergents for cleaning is possible. Any deposits of road tar should be removed with a soap solution.

Automatic cleaning machines can be used but attention must be paid to the dosing parameters of the cleaning machine. The maximum concentration should not be higher than 500:1 (water : detergent). The pH value of these solutions should be between 9 and 10, and clean water must be used for a very thorough final rinse.

IMPORTANT: Cleaners containing the following aggressive chemicals are strictly not recommended:

High pressure cleaning can be carried out as long as the temperature is maintained below 50°C. The lance must be used at a minimum of 60cm from the paint surface (180 bars maximum). Always carry out cleaning processes in a shaded area, never in direct sunlight. To prevent corrosion problems, any stone chips / damage must be rapidly repaired with the correct Delfleet UHS paint system: Use F3113 or F3114 Delfleet UHS mixed with hardener 3:1, without thinner and apply a small quantity to a chipped area using a brush. Larger areas of damage should be sanded and repaired using the correct Delfleet UHS paint system, including primer and topcoat.

Dissolves oils and waxes. Can attack paint resins and pigments. Cleaners containing the following aggressive chemicals are strictly not recommended

Soaps and detergents The molecules of soap possess a hydrophilic nature (soluble in water) and also a hydrophobic nature (soluble in greases). They are capable of mixing with some greases which are not soluble in water and dispersing these greases in an emulsion solution. Also they reduce the surface tension of insoluble particles allowing them to be removed more easily from a paint surface.

Acids, alkalis and the pH scale • The pH scale is a numeric graduation going from 0 to 14.

• The neutral aqueous solutions have a pH of 7, Acids have a pH < 7, and Alkalis have a pH > 7.

• The graduation is logarithmic, and one unit of pH has a factor equivalent to 10 in the concentration of acids or alkalis.

For the dilution of Alkalis by a factor of 10, the pH is reduced by one unit.

For the dilution of Acids by a factor of 10 the pH is raised by one unit.

The table below lists the different types of dirt and the recommended methods of removal. Read carefully the recommendations supplied with the different cleaning agents and ensure that they are used correctly. Do not use any abrasive products. Rinse carefully with clean water, before use of any detergents and always thoroughly rinse after using detergent cleaners.

Oils and Greases Steam clean or use a cleaner with an alkaline base

(ensure correct dilution and strictly avoid Caustic Soda)

Flour Clean using dedicated solution in a pressure washer.

Other substances Specific agents depending upon the contamination.

Rinse the vehicle thoroughly using clean water, before using a solution containing a cleaner. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly again using clean water.

Pressure Washing The lance must be kept at a minimum distance of 60cm from the paint film, with a maximum pres-

sure of 180 bars. Always use the correct dilution.

Temperature of Water Maximum 50°C for cleaning. Ambient temperature for rinsing.

Rinsing A large volume of cold clear water should be used, so that no detergent/cleaner is left on the

surface of the paint film.

Problem Cause

Vehicle remains dirty after the cleaning

Greasy film has not been removed, bad choice of detergent. Temperature too low. Inadequate rinsing.

Solid residues on the paint surface when the vehicle is dried

With long, soft bristles, and must be properly maintained and replaced regularly

Matt appearance when dry, gloss can only be returned by polishing

Caustic attack from the cleaner. Usually due to incorrect dilution of the cleaner or inadequate rinsing.

Residues of Cement / Lime not removed Incorrect type of cleaner.

Change of colour, reduction of gloss, marbled appearance.

Pigments attacked by very strong acids or alkalis.

Matt patchy appearance

The effect of strong sunlight (UV) on poorly rinsed areas can result in an accelerated and irregular matting of the paint.

Delfleet Fast Thinner F373 PRODUCT DRSCRIPTION Delfleet Chromate-Free Wash Primer is a medium build wash etch which complies with current European VOC legislation. It is designed to give good adhesion when used on new panels and to promote the adhesion of subsequent paint films. It is equally suitable for use on small and large surfaces and may be used in a Wet-on-Wet system if required. This product must always be catalysed with its own Reactive Reducer , F365 , before use. This product is designed for use as an adhesion promoter ; Do not use as an isolator.

Maximum dry film build should be 25µm.

EQUIPMENT CLEANING After use clean all equipment thoroughly with cleaning solvent or thinner.

The EU limit for this product (product category:IIB.c) in ready for use form is max. 780g/l of VOC.

The VOC content of this product in ready for use form is max. 780 g/l. Depending on the chosen mode of use,

the actual ready to use VOC of this product may be lower than that specified by the EU Directive code.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Delfleet Chromated Free High Solids Epoxy Primer is a versatile product which complies to current European VOC legislation of less than 540 g/l. The primer is extremely versatile , is intended for use over a wide range of suitably prepared substrates and can be used as a sanding or a non-sand primer ; In non-sand mode it can be baked , air-dried or used as part of a wet-on-wet system. PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS This product should not be used at a temperature lower than 15°C or a humidity higher than 80%.

The drying times quoted above are approximate times and will vary depending upon drying conditions and film thickness. Poor ventilation and excessive film thickness will extend drying times. Overnight temperatures above 15°C are essential for the primer to completely cure. Recoating: Drying times will depend upon film thickness and drying conditions. In common with other primers, longer drying times before recoat will improve final appearance. May be recoated with PPG Commercial transport 2K primers or directly with PPG Commercial transport 2K topcoats. If overcoated with CT waterborne basecoat, it is important that F4900 / F4901 are fully baked or allowed to dry for at least 10 hours at 20°C. Drying of this primer at temperatures below 15°C may be accelerated by adding 3% by weight of F384 Epoxy Accelerator. This Epoxy primer can be used with plural mix application equipment using the 4:1 mixing ratio with F3297 hardener. EQUIPMENT CLEANING After use clean all equipment thoroughly with cleaning solvent or thinner.

Product Description F8940, designed on the latest primer technology, can be used to optimise the priming process when used in combination with DELFLEET ® Topcoats or Envirobase HP. It is designed to deliver a high quality final appearance through a non sand process. Excellent application, very smooth flow and superb holdout properties are at the core of this product’s performance. F8940 can be recoated directly after 30 minutes, or for up to 5 days with no sanding, so new vehicles can be primed in advance with minimal preparation, and can be held ready for the topcoating process with the rest of the vehicle. The strong adhesion and anti-corrosion characteristics do not require the use of primer before F8940 is applied, this as long as the high film build is respected. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION F491X, designed on the latest primer technology, can be used to optimise the priming process when used in combination with Envirobase HP and UHS F3113/4 UHS topcoats. It is designed to deliver a high quality final appearance through a non sand process that is equivalent to a sanded primer. Excellent application, very smooth flow and superb holdout properties are at the core of this product’s performance. Due to the excellent adhesion characteristics of F491X, no sanding of sound OE electrocoat is required, providing a very fast new panel process. F491X can be recoated directly after 25 minutes, or for up to 5 days with no sanding, so new parts can be primed in batches in advance with minimal preparation, and can be held ready for the topcoating process with the rest of the vehicle. The strong adhesion and anti-corrosion characteristics mean that small rub throughs on electrocoated panels do not require the use of an epoxy primer before F491X is applied. If large or exposed areas of bare metal are to be painted for best corrosion performance or for OEM warranty standard corrosion performance use a Wash Primer or an Epoxy Primer. This undercoat can also be applied to E-coat and other recommended substrates.

PREPARATION OF SUBSTRATE- SANDING

F491X can be applied over a wide range of substrates including:

- Well cleaned unsanded Electrocoat. - Bare steel areas up to 10 cm diameter without the need for an Epoxy Primer - Galvanised Steel for rub throughs up to 10 cm maximum diameter - Zintec for rub throughs up to 10cm maximum diameter - Aluminium and alloys for rub throughs up to 10 cm maximum diameter - Aged painted and original surfaces sanded with P320 or finer - GRP, Fibreglass P120/ P240/P320 - Polyester Filler P120/ P240/P320 Note: For best corossion performance Wash or Epoxy Primer should be applied prior to the application of F491X for areas of bare metal above 10cm diameter.

PREPARATION OF SUBSTRATE – DEGREASING Before any preparation work, wash all surfaces to be painted with soap and water. Rinse and allow to dry before degreasing with a suitable PPG substrate cleaner. Ensure all substrates are thoroughly cleaned and dried before and after each stage of the preparation work. Always wipe substrate cleaner off the panel surface immediately, using a clean dry cloth.

Normally F491X does not require flatting and can be directly topcoated. If some dirt inclusion occurs, light flatting/denibbing can be carried out after the first coat of basecoat using P800 with foam pad otherwise after force drying for any other need.

PROCESSING ALTERNATIVES F491X is especially useful for painting batches of small parts ready for the topcoating process. The excellent flow characteristics allow the OE quality finish to be replicated without sanding. F491X can be topcoated using the following alternatives: - Flash off between 25 minutes and 1 hour. - Light denibbing and precleaning is required after 8 hrs to prevent any workshop

contamination from the environment from affecting the topcoat performance. F491X CAN BE USED IN PRIMER FILLER MODE USING THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS Mix and use the gun set up as recommended in the main Process note. Apply 1 light + 2 full coats This gives a film thickness of approximately 60-70 microns Bake for 30 minutes at 60°C metal temperature. IR medium wave – 5 min flash off, followed by a 10 min cure time. After cooling dry sand with P400 or finer

EQUIPMENT CLEANING After use, clean all equipment thoroughly with suitable cleaning solvent or thinner.

PAINTING PLASTICS F491X can be applied directly over well prepared and cleaned ABS, NORYL, PC/PBT, LEXAN, PUR and SMC, as well as sanded and pre-primed bumpers. For bare plastic sections or rub through areas on bumpers, e.g. PP, TPO, PP/EPDM F491X should be primed with D820 or D816 Plastic Primer (see “CT Plastics System” recommendation) and flashed off 10 minutes before the application of Wet on Wet undercoat. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION Delfleet 2K Sealer provides a fast repair system for shops that are looking to save on labour costs by offering a

non-sand, transparent, adhesion promoting film that can be directly topcoated. F398 can also be tinted with

Delfleet tinters to give coloured groundcoats.

It complies to current European VOC legislation of less than 540 g/l.

SUBSTRATE PRE-TREATMENT

Prepare the substrate as follows: Substrates OE Finishes, Sound / Existing Paintwork. Substrates should be dry sanded with P280-320 or wet sanded with P400-500. Areas difficult to access should be well prepared with Scotchbrite.

CLEANING

The substrate to be painted must be dry, clean, free of corrosion, grease & mould release agents. Substrates need to be thoroughly prepared using a combination of D845 Degreaser & D837 Spirit Wipe ( or D842 low V.O.C. cleaner )

Any exposed bare metal should be spot primed with Delfleet Primer F393.

PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS

This product is not for use directly to metal.

To provide a coloured undercoat , this product can be tinted with up to 5% of Delfleet tinters before standard

activation takes place.

Ensure topcoating occurs within 24 hours otherwise light sanding with P320-400 dry is necessary.

If dirt pick up or damage occurs and rectification is required, F398 may be lightly sanded when hard

(approximately 2 hours air drying at 20°C)

PAINTING PLASTIC SUBSTRATES F398 may be applied over properly prepared painted plastic substrates. Prepare by carefully cleaning and scuffing

with Fine Scotchbrite. F398 may also be applied over primed plastics.

If F398 is applied over very flexible plastics, then it should be mixed as detailed below: F398 5 parts

F3437 Flexible Additive 1 part

After adding the additive, the resulting mix should be activated and thinned in the normal way.

Note: use of F3437 Flexible Additive will extend drying times.

COLOUR MIXING All Delfleet Tinters should be thoroughly hand stirred when first opened, and then stirred on a mixing machine for 10 minutes before use. Thereafter all tinters should be machine stirred twice a day for at least 10 minutes.

COLOUR CHECKING As with all refinish systems a colour check should be carried out on the mixed colour, before application to a vehicle.

HVLP / COMPLIANT SPRAYGUNS The most suitable type of HVLP / Compliant sprayguns for the painting of Commercial Transport products are a pressure fed system. Note: If long compressed air lines are used, an increase in pressure will be needed. Air Cap Pressure for HVLP - 0.68 Bar (10 psi) Paint Pressure - 2 / 2.5 Bar inlet

DRYING TIMES The drying times quoted above are approximate times and will vary depending upon drying conditions and film thickness. Poor ventilation, temperatures below 20°C and high film thicknesses will extend drying times. Large vehicles or Heavy section Chassis parts will need extended baking schedules to reach the required Time at Temperature.

SELECTION OF ACCELERATORS To reduce drying times F3307 Accelerated thinner may be used. Also F3915 UHS Accelerator may be used in conditions of lower temperatures or to improve the through cure and reduce baking times - See datasheet RLD201V. It is important to note that the use of F3304 Fast Thinner is vital in application, if F3915 is to be fully utilised, and that pot lives will be reduced when Accelerators are used.

NOTES: F3113 binder will also give good results when used with Electrostatic application. Allow finishes to harden thoroughly before subjecting to vehicle washes. It is recommended that Delfleet 2K finishes are allowed to cure for at least 7 days prior to any decal application. MATTING OF DELFLEET UHS TOPCOATS Please refer to RLD277V_ F3111_Delfleet Matt Binder for UHS Technical Data Sheet PAINTING PLASTIC F3113 topcoats can be used over suitably prepared and primed plastics. COLOUR MIXING F3111 should be thoroughly hand stirred when first opened, and then stirred on a mixing machine for 10 minutes before use.

COLOUR CHECKING As with all refinish systems a colour check should be carried out on the mixed colour, before application to a vehicle.

HVLP / COMPLIANT SPRAYGUNS The most suitable type of HVLP / Compliant sprayguns for the painting of Commercial Transport products are a pressure fed system. DRYING TIMES The drying times quoted above are approximate times and will vary depending upon drying conditions and film thickness. Poor ventilation, temperatures below 20°C and high film thicknesses will extend drying times. Large vehicles or Heavy section Chassis parts will need extended baking schedules to reach the required Time at Temperature.

NOTES: Allow finishes to harden thoroughly before subjecting to vehicle washes. It is recommended that Delfleet 2K finishes are allowed to cure for at least 7 days prior to any decal application. EQUIPMENT CLEANING After use clean all equipment thoroughly with cleaning solvent or thinner.

Delfleet UHS Topcoat Binders F3113 / 4 Delfleet UHS Clearcoat F3460 Delfleet High Performance UHS Clearcoat F3913 __________________________________________________________ PRODUCT DESCRIPTION SPP2000 – Paint Performance Enhancer is an additive for use with Delfleet UHS topcoats and Delfleet UHS clearcoat. It has been designed to give enhanced water repellancy, through surface tension variation.

PRODUCT MIXING GUIDE

1) The topcoat (or clearcoat) and hardener should be thoroughly mixed before the addition of the SPP2000. Add 10% by weight of SPP2000 to the topcoat (F3113 or F3114) or 6% by weight to the clearcoat (F3460 or F3913) and thoroughly mix to ensure a completely homogeneous mix.

2) Then add thinner to obtain the correct application viscosity as per topcoat datasheet.

3) Alternatively add SPP2000 to the fully mixed and thinned F3113, F3114, F3460 or F3913 and

stir very thoroughly to ensure the mix is completely homogenous. 4) Topcoats or clearcoat containing SPP2000 can be applied using one of two methods.

a. One Visit application – using SPP2000 in the mix. b. Two coat application – using SPP2000 in the second coat only.

One Visit Application: Mix the topcoat/clearcoat carefully as above using the SPP2000, ensuring that the viscosity is correct, and apply.

Two Coat Application: Mix the topcoat/clearcoat as normal, without the SPP2000, and apply

the first coat. Allow the correct flash off time between coats. Mix the topcoat/clearcoat as above using the SPP200 and apply the

second coat.

RECOATING GUIDE When recoating a topcoat or a clearcoat that contains SPP2000, it is necessary to sand the topcoat thoroughly, to remove at least 10 microns of the topcoat before recoating. The use of a wet on wet primer is then recommended prior to re-top coating.

PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS Application of Decals to a UHS topcoat or clearcoat containing SPP2000 Please note that decal application is difficult over this type of surface. Conventional decals should not be applied on top of coatings containing SPP2000. The only decals that are recommended over these topcoats:- 3M Scotch SC85* Do not apply decals until at least 3 days after application of the topcoat. Application of Sealers to a UHS topcoat or clearcoat containing SPP2000 It is difficult to get sealers to adhere to UHS topcoats containing SPP2000. Recommended adhesives / Sealers are:- Sikaflex, 221, 265, 515, 554-B, 254-B, or 553-2K.

Applied as a part of a two-stage basecoat paint system, CT Waterborne basecoats reproduce original solid, metallic or mica paint finishes, giving excellent covering power and fade out capability. In conjunction with high quality PPG Delfleet Clearcoats and Primers, the CT Waterborne basecoat system delivers excellent gloss and durability. Easy to use, this is a simple and flexible system capable of high quality vehicle repairs.

REPAIR AND RECOATING OVERCOATING

CT Waterborne Basecoat Ready Mix must be over coated with a Delfleet UHS Clearcoat after the minimum flash times.

RECOATING

TIMES

The maximum recoat time is 36 hours. After 36 hours, 1 coat of CT Waterborne Basecoat Ready Mix has to be applied prior to the Clearcoat application.

De - Nib

It is possible to de-nib CT Waterborne Basecoat Ready Mix, after 20 minutes flash off, with fine sanding paper – P1500 (wet/dry paper) using air blowing and a tack rag to remove sanding dust and followed by a spot repair (see FADING-OUT section) prior to the Clearcoat application.

Multi – colour

work It is recommended to Force dry the basecoat prior to masking.

OVERCOAT

WITH Delfleet UHS Clearcoats. (See Clearcoat Technical Data Sheets for information)

FADE – OUT TECHNIQUE Fading-out CT Waterborne Basecoat Ready Mix is necessary for spot repair and advised when metallic or mica colours have to be repaired.

Apply basecoat to the prepared area to obliterate the primed area. Reduce the pressure at the spraygun and fade into the surrounding area. Flash off until uniformly matt, for larger areas apply final control coat (metallics and micas) before applying clear.

Alternatively use T490 as follows:

Prepare colour as specified in the datasheet. Using light inward strokes reach coverage on the repaired area. Thin one part of the ready for use colour with one part of T490 ready to use Use this mixture to fade the repair edges spraying from the outside to the inside the repair area. Repeat the last step until the potential colour difference has been lost. Allow the repair become uniformly matt and dry before clearcoating.

PERFORMANCE AND LIMITATIONS

Do not exceed maximum film build recommendations. Do not use spraygun as an air blower. Most basecoats will have high opacity but the coverage of some may be assisted by the use of an appropriately tinted Delfleet primer or GreyMatic primer. If left overnight , surface must be tacked-off prior to clearcoating.

STORAGE & HANDLING CT Waterborne Basecoat Ready Mix colour & T494 thinner should be stored in a cool, dry place away from sources of heat. During storage and transportation temperatures must be maintained at a minimum of +5°C and a maximum of +35°C. Avoid exposure to frost or freezing conditions.

CT Waterborne Basecoat Ready Mix should be mixed in clean, dry containers and equipment. Do not use mixing vessels or spray equipment that contains solvent residues. Mixing vessels should ideally be plastic - if metallic they should have an internal anti-corrosion coating.

EQUIPMENT CLEANING Clean all mixing equipment immediately after use, preferably using a dedicated waterborne equipment cleaning machine.

Ensure all equipment is completely dry before storage or use.

PRODUCTS The PPG Plastic Painting System gives a range of products for the successful refinishing of all paintable plastic substrates*, from cleaning and preparation through to texturing and topcoating. D820 Plastic Adhesion Promoter is a fast, transparent 1 pack primer suitable for use on the vast majority if paintable plastic substrates and avoids the need to identify the plastic prior to spraying. D8420 Plastic Adhesion Promoter - Aerosol, is a fast, 1 pack primer in an aerosol. It is suitable for use on the vast majority of paintable plastic substrates avoiding the need to identify the substrate before spraying, and is designed for priming spot repairs or small components. D816 Flexible Adhesion Promoter for Plastics, is a ready for use, flexible, pigmented adhesion promoter for use over solvent sensitive substrates such as 1K PUR plastic. Thorough preparation and cleaning are essential for the successful refinishing of plastic parts. The PPG plastic cleaning and preparation system is designed to produce the best performance from the adhesion promoter, undercoat and topcoat systems. Refer to the Cleaning and Preparation of Plastic Substrates PDS RLD241V. * Note: These adhesion promoters are not suitable for use on Polystyrene (PS), or on pure PE, which is considered un-paintable.

If the plastic surface appears inconsistent, it is recommended that the part be "flamed" or pre-stoved for 30 minutes at 60°c.

Prior and after any sanding operation, the substrate must be thoroughly degreased with Deltron D846.

Before the adhesion promoter application, D846 may be used sprayed on the panel and allowed to evaporate in order to avoid any static electricity effect.

MIXING RATIO D816 & D820 are supplied ready for use, no thinning required. Stir D816 thoroughly before use. D8420 is ready to spray from the aerosol. Shake to dislodge the ball bearing & then shake for 2 minutes prior to use.

When higher build is necessary, D839 flexibilised or D8023 flexibilised (see relevant individual technical datasheet for details) may be used on top of the plastic adhesion promoters.

AEROSOL CAN DISPOSAL When aerosol is empty, turn it upside down and press the nozzle until all propellant is exhausted. Place empty can or cans that will no longer be used into properly labeled metal containers. The waste containers should be managed as a hazardous waste according to legislation.

EQUIPMENT CLEANING After use, clean all equipment thoroughly with cleaning solvent or thinner.
