How to Make a Tote Bag

Do you need a tote bag, or know someone who'd love it as a gift? Are you bored with the selections in the stores? Or  perhaps just too frugal to pay twenty bucks for something you could make yourself? Find some fabric for sale (or

any abandoned fabric in your closet will work, too!) and put that sewing machine to work!1. Fold your rectangles in thirds lengthwise and mark the two creases in the INSIDE or

"wrong" side of the material.

2.

Sew the sides and bottom. With the jean legs, you can use the ankle hems for the

"top" hem of the tote.

Unfold and sew the two rectangles together on the two long sides and across one

short haai danny(sides and bottom of tote)

3.

Miter and sew the corners perpendicular to the bottom seam.

Sewing the Miter

Miter the corners to the inside to make them sit flat on a surface. Take care to make

your miters even and perpendicular to the side and bottom seams.

Line up the seams for a perfect corner miter.

Note: Line up the bottom and side seams at the corner to get a perfect corner

for your miter.

4. Hem the top edge.

5. Cut two 2 inch wide strips of fabric the length you want your handles to be.

○ Sew the long edges of your handle strip together.

○  Turn it right side out and press smooth with an iron.

○  Top stitch the handles to keep them flat during use. In the example, the rawedges were folded to the middle and zig-zag stitched in place to avoid thehassle of turning and top stitching. Use whichever method you like best.

6.

Pin and sew the handles.

Fold the ends of your handles under and place the ends of your handles over the

1/3rd marks made in the previous step. Place the ends approximately 1.5 inches

below the edge of your bag opening, and pin or baste in place.

7.

Top Stitch the handles in place.

Top stitch the handles to the bag along their edges.

[edit] Tips

•  You can make a tote out of any material you like, but heavier materials work best.

• Using denim or similar very heavy fabrics will require a larger, thicker needle on yoursewing machine. Work slowly, don't press the pedal all the way down, and be careful.

•  You can recycle old jeans for use as a tote by first cutting off a the jean legs andopening the "inner" seam so that the denim lies flat along the outer seam. Cut yourrectangles and proceed as with any other fabric. See How to Make a Denim Purse.

•  To line your tote, simply make another rectangle 1/2 inch smaller in both dimensions, sew it as above, and place it inside your tote with seams facing the seams of yourtote before you sew the top opening hem. Place your two top hems even with eachother and roll them together to cover raw edges before sewing.

2.

Wash and iron the cloth.

Launder and iron the fabrics to be used.

3.

Measure for size.

Measure the laptop to be carried. The author used a Cardboard Laptop Case as a

guide for size. Measure all the way around the laptop, from the hinge side to theopening, and then back to the hinge, not just the top. This will be the length of the

fabric. Then measure the width of the laptop plus each side. This will be the width of

the fabric.

4.

Page 6: PPD Refind Originals

Cut the inside and outside layers of cloth.

Cut two layers of cloth: One layer large enough to cover the laptop all the way

around, PLUS an inch (2.5 cm) in every direction, and the other layer half an inch (1

cm) larger than the first all around. One will be the outside and the other will be the

lining. They can be the same colors or different, coordinating colors. If the outside

layer is a durable water-resistant kind of fabric, so much the better.5. Cut two thicknesses of quilt batting the size of your smaller (inner) piece of material.

6. Cut a layer of interfacing material the size of the smaller (inner) piece of material.

7.

Stitch up the sides.

Sew the sides of the outer layer of material, leaving the top open.

8.

Sewn miters. Note the corrected seam line on one...

Miter the corners.

9.

Sew the point to the seam line.

Sew the tips of the miters to the seam line.

10. Turn "right side" out and test fit.

11.

Batting "sandwiched" between interfacing and fabric.

Layer the interfacing, batting, and inner material.

12. Align them carefully.

1.

Quilt the three layers together by hand or by machine.

2. Sew the sides of the quilted layer, leaving the top edge open.

3.

Clip batting and interfacing close to the seam line.

Clip the batting and interfacing close to the seam.

Page 8: PPD Refind Originals

4.

Miter the corners as above.

Miter the corners, sewing the mitered tips to the seam line.

5.

Ready to test fit with outer layer.

Test fit by sliding your laptop (or box) into the inner layer and then into the outer

layer.

6.

Does it all fit?

Page 9: PPD Refind Originals

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ppd-refind-originals 9/23

Make any necessary adjustments for proper fit at this point.

7.

Cut the inside layer two inches (5cm) from the top of your laptop / box.

Clip the inner layer two inches from the edge of your laptop (or box, in this case.)

8.

Clip the outer layer two inches (5 cm) from the edge of the inner layer.

Clip the outer layer two inches (5 cm) from the edge of the inner layer.

9.

Outer view of pinned edges.

Inside view, ready for sewing.

Fold the outer layer twice, once in and over itself and then again over the inner layer

and pin for sewing. (This forms a roll of cloth, hiding the raw edges of both layers.)

10. Sew the layers together along the inside, lower edge of the rolled/folded outer edge.

11. Cut 4-5 inch (10-13 cm) wide strips for your handles. Make them of a length that ispleasing and comfortable for you (12 inches or 30 cm for a short handle, 24+ inches

or 70+ cm for a shoulder strap).

12.

Fold edge to center

Fold second edge to center.

Fold in half again and press.

Fold and iron the handle strips.

13.

 Top Stitch the edges.

Top stitch the strips to hold their shape.

14. Measure the top of your bag and divide by 3. Mark the thirds with pins.

15.

Handle placement.

Place your handle ends just outside the pins along the edge.

16. Pin the handles in place.

17.

Fold the ends under.

Fold the raw ends of the handles under themselves.

18. Pin in place.

Top stitch handle ends to bag.

Topstitch the handle ends in place. (It's zig-zagged across the top edge in pictures,

single stitched the rest of the way. Choose whatever appeals to you.)

20.

Customize as you like.

Trim all threads and there's your new custom carrying case for your laptop

21. Modified steps for creating a cleaner looking or more finished project:

22. As far as the cutting and pre-construction goes, the above steps are very well writtenand easy to follow; however, if you're looking to create a cleaner or more finishedproject you can follow the guidelines below for the assembly of your tote:

23. There's a much cleaner way to do this which will hide the attachment of the straps

and the raw edge/seam of the inner/outer layer.24. When sewing the lining leave a hole in the bottom. Then sew the handle to the lining

with right side facing in. To assemble, flip lining right side out with strap/handle onthe inside. Put exterior shell inside lining, also with right side out. Sew seam aroundthe top connecting the inside and straps of the bag to the exterior shell.

25.What you'll have now is a tote with the lining on the outside (right side out), theexterior on the inside (looking down in to the tote you'll see the wrong side of theexterior fabric), and the strapped sandwhiched between the two.

26.So, how do you get it to look like a tote? Remeber the hole you left in the lining?Reach in that hole and grab the strap or exterior fabric and pull it through. That willput the strap and the exterior fabric on the outside (right side out) and the lining onthe inside (right side showing). You'll have to machine sew or hand sew the hole shut

in the bottom of the lining. It doesn't matter if it's not perfect because that seam willbe on the inside of the bag.

27.If you use batting or foam rubber to reenforce the bag keep that in mind when you'releaving the hole in the bottom of the lining. You'll have to pull that bulk through tocomplete the bag. There is really no right or wrong size for the 'pull through' hole. It

just depends on the project and materials being used.

[edit] Tips

•  This can be done by hand, but is best sewn on a machine.

•  This can be done without padding; see How to Make a Tote Bag.

•  This works very well coordinated with the cardboard laptop carrier's inner layer and

adding this project as the outer layer for greater stability with a 'finished' look.

Things You'll Need

•  Two yards of material. May be a yard each of different materials if desired.

• One yard of Quilt Batting

• One yard of interfacing material or similar, thin fabric.

• Sewing Machine

•  Tape Measure

•  Thread

Product Basics

Products may be described in terms of their features and benefits. Features are productcharacteristics; benefits are customer needs served by those features. Some examples of featuresare size, color, horsepower, functionality, design, hours of business, and fabric content. Benefitsare less tangible but always answer the customer’s question: What’s in it for me?

While product features are usually easy to define, product benefits can be trickier because theyexist in the customers' minds. The most compelling product benefits are those that provideemotional or financial rewards. It’s not the brighter smile that the toothpaste offers that is its benefit; it’s what the smile might bring you (a good-looking mate, a better job, etc.).

Emotional rewards run the gamut of human emotions, but basically allow the buyer to feel better in some way. For example, sending flowers to a friend or family member allows the buyer to feelsupportive or loving. Buying products made from recycled materials offers the buyer the chanceto feel environmentally responsible.

Products that deliver financial rewards allow the buyer to save money (e.g., a discount long-distance phone plan) or make money (e.g., computer software for managing a home-based business).

Discovering Your Product's Benefits

To identify your product’s benefits, you must consider your customers' needs. Imagine yourself

in your customers’ shoes, talk to them directly, or conduct surveys asking about their needs and perceptions. If possible, hire an independent firm to conduct a focus group with a sample groupof customers to test your product for usability and desirability. Examine customers who have purchased your product in the past. What do their customer profiles tell you about your product’s benefits?

Once you have a basic sense of your product's benefits, you can set up systems to develop andtrack their evolution:

Page 14: PPD Refind Originals

8/14/2019 PPD Refind Originals

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ppd-refind-originals 14/23

• Ask customers for suggestions for improvement.

• Pay careful attention to customer complaints and prospect inquiries. Train and reward

employees for questioning customers and prospects to learn what they like and don’t likeabout your product.

Watch your competitors. Do the changes in their product offerings suggest product benefits you hadn't yet considered?

Why is it important to understand my product’s features and benefits?

Understanding product features and benefits allows you to:

• Describe your products in terms relevant to your customers.

• Differentiate - explain how your product is different than the competition's.

• Effectively choose pricing and positioning strategies. Refer to strategy ideas below in

"Strategies that are based on features."

Differentiation

Products may be highly unique (specialty products), virtually indistinguishable fromcompetitors’ products (commodity products), or in between these extremes. No level of uniqueness is necessarily better than any other, but they do require different marketing strategies.A potentially important strategy for specialty products is differentiation, which sets them apartfrom the competitors’ products in the minds of customers. A thorough understanding of how your  product’s benefits compare to your competitors’ allows you to compete effectively with themthrough differentiation.

• Commodity Products - Few, if any, perceived differences among competing products.

•Specialty Products - Highly unique features compared to other products competing for  buyers' dollars.

Strategies that are based upon features

• Introducing - Identifying yourself as the first to offer a new product feature is a provencompetitive strategy. For example, specifying a product as the first organic body lotioncontaining Vitamin E will position your company as a leader, at least for a while.

• Improving/Modifying - Instead of being at the head of the pack with a totally newfeature, you might modify or improve your product’s features, which creates theimpression that your company cares about satisfying its customers. Modifying product

features is a strategy many businesses use when a competitor has lowered prices. For example, if the maker of one organic body lotion lowers its price, the maker of another may add Vitamin E as a new and improved feature but keep its price the same. It isimportant to remember that modifying features usually leads to changes in benefits. Stayaware of the evolution of perceived benefits your product offers so you can use them inyour marketing.

• Grouping - Often, features are grouped into different product models — and prices —

escalating from a basic model to a fully loaded model. Automobiles, electronic devices,

Page 15: PPD Refind Originals

8/14/2019 PPD Refind Originals

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ppd-refind-originals 15/23

and vacation packages each offer features that may be added to a basic product model.Services can also be grouped in this fashion. For example, an accountant might offer acertain fee for preparing annual tax returns, another fee to also process payroll, andanother to manage all of a client's financial affairs.

Eco-friendly BagsMay 8, 2008

…or, what am I missing?

Reading about recycled leather handbags this week over at Cheap Jap got me thinking. Yeah, there I go again! What in the world is so eco-friendly about a bag made of man-made materials?

True, no animals are harmed but I doubt that wearing a plastic purse is going to save many cows, pigs and lambs since leather is a by-product of the meat industry. I don’t think the world is goingto give up meat anytime soon so I consider it more socially responsible to use as much of the

animal as possible. I know this probably sounds odd coming from an animal-crazy former vegetarian but this is simply my way of thinking. Also, leather lasts longer and, being a natural product, is biodegradeable. Man-made leathers wear out more quickly and do not degrade (don’teven get me started on how cheap they look). Besides, just as Cheap Jap says, if you think I’m paying $995 for a nylon purse, you are all kinds of crazy.

Recycling? Now, that is a trend that I like. I often save old bags for the leather or the hardware if it is still in good shape and I made a bag a couple of years ago from leather recycled from my bar stool cushions - it had that aged ’70s look that I am so fond of. But, I laugh when this is called a“trend” since we sewers (and quilters) have been doing it since the beginning of time!

My idea of an eco-friendly bag? Those canvas things you bring to the grocery store.

Individually hand crafted and skillfully sewn to ahigh standard, you can be assured our handmade products have not been mass produced andnobody was exploited in making them. Our ethos is to promote low impact, environmentallyfriendly, local production.

We love vintage fabric and sewing and wanted to create unique bags which stood out from mass

produced high street offerings. We are also passionate about encouraging people to use less plastic bags. At Pouch we make unique bags from quirky, vintage and recycled material. Due tothe fact we use vintage material, many of our bags are one-offs and the vast majority are limitededition. Our bags are robust, practical and very stylish!

Why Buy Recycled? Recycling begins when materials are collected for recycling. The collected materials are then manufactured intonew products. When your school purchases those recycled-content products, you are closing the loop by bringingmaterials full circle from old product to new product! Look on product labels for the highest post-consumer content(rather than pre-consumer content) available. Post-consumer waste is waste from products that were previouslyused and then collected from the consumer.

By buying recycled-content products you help to preserve natural resources, reduce energy use & pollution, createmarkets for recyclables and minimize the impact of your school's activities on the environment.

Recycle in Style

Now you can recycle and look good doing it. Gone are the days of unsightly blue bins and

Page 21: PPD Refind Originals

8/14/2019 PPD Refind Originals

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/ppd-refind-originals 21/23

forgotten piles of  plastic bottles. Now, thanks to the creators of the Ecopod e1, with the nearlyeffortless push of a pedal you can experience the "sweet sound of compaction" as your assortedaluminum cans and water bottles are hidden away, conveniently compressed, and then transferredto a removable storage bin. This chic device, for home or office use, was developed by BMWDesignworks to make recycling clean, simple, and worry-free.

Just place cans and bottles in the allotted space and step on the lever, and you can stockpile 50 to60 crushed recyclables in the inner compartment. Glass, paper items, and plastic bags can bestored in one of two separate containers on top.

"Recyclable materials are oftentimes tossed in the trash simply because recycling is notconvenient and creates clutter," according to the Ecopod website. To combat this problem, and toredirect the estimated 134 billion beverage containers that enter U.S. landfills each year, Ecopodhas partnered with Williams-Sonoma,  Dwell magazine, and even indie crooner Jack Johnson tospread the message that recycling is both sensible and stylish.

Available in black and white, the Ecopod retails for $328 and is available through the Ecopodwebsite and at a number of retail stores, including Target and Hammacher Schlemmer .

Recycle Denim Jeans with These Fun, Functional ProjectsNo matter how worn out, torn up or out of style they might be, your old jeans still

have some life left in them and are just waiting for you to recreate them into

something fabulous and functional. Most importantly, don't ever let them end up in

the trash bin - old

<a class="link"

href="http://www.associatedcontent.com/theme/410/denim_more_than_just_blue_je

ans.html" title="denim">denim can always be used for something and it's a terrible

waste for denim jeans to end up in a landfill.

If you are the crafty sort, there is really no limit to how you can use your old denim

jeans. But, you don't need extreme sewing skills or to be a mad crafter to find ways

to reuse your jeans in fun, functional ways around the house or fashioned into new

wardrobe pieces. With easy patterns and tutorials all over the Internet, anyone can

recycle their used denim jeans into household items, décor accents, accessories and

more.

With basic sewing skills you can create anything from a fun, funky tote bag to

potholders and placemats to fashionable, hip skirts. Old denim is also great for

cutting into squares and using for quilting, as well as creating tool bags (with

pockets!) reusable grocery bags, plastic bag holders and even rugs.

To create a great, durable (and washable) rug, you don't even need a sewing

Page 22: PPD Refind Originals

machine. Using a traditional braided rag rug method, cut the denim into long thin

strips and sew them together end to end to create three very long strips to braid.

Braid the strips and then begin to wrap your long braid into a circle or oval, hand

stitching each row together as you go.

Plastic bag holders are easy to make out of recycled denim jeans and are handy tohave around for reusing all those plastic bags you still have from back before you

started using reusable shopping bags. If you have basic sewing skills, you can

create a more functional bag holder with a hanging loop and sewn elastic closure,

but no sewing is required. Simply cut one of the denim jean legs in the length you

prefer for your bag holder and use a cord or ribbon to cinch the ends enough to hold

the bags inside with an opening for putting them in and pulling them out.

Ways that You Can Customize Your Jeans in as Little as 10

MinutesCustom jeans can help you make the kind of fashion statement that sets you apart

from the crowd. Jeans are one of the most universally worn garments today, which

makes them a safe and stylish choice for people of all ages. However, just because

you love your

jeans doesn't mean that you have to look like everybody else. When you decorate

and wear your own custom jeans, you will be able to show off your individuality and

display your unique character to anybody lucky enough to be in your vicinity.Wearing custom jeans will show everybody that you are independent, creative, and

fearless. Custom jeans make a strong fashion statement, and they are not for the

faint of heart, but if you are looking for a way to stand out, consider creating your

own wearable art.

Making custom jeans can be almost as much fun as wearing them. There are

several different ways to customize a pair of jeans, so even if you do not consider

yourself an accomplished crafter or fashionista, or if you don’t have a whole

afternoon or weekend to devote to this kind of project, you can still choose a

method of customizing your jeans that will suit your taste, your time restrictions,

and your talents. Whichever method you choose, you will emerge from the process

with a pair of very special custom jeans.

The easiest way to make your jeans unique is as simple as writing your name. A

simple marker can be the start of a very special and intricate pair of custom jeans. If

you have the skill and the free time, you can spend a whole day drawing detailed

monochromatic motifs all over your jeans. If you are a writer, consider inscribing

your favorite poem or story instead of drawing to create a stunning conversation

piece that will make you feel great and accomplished every time you wear it.

Custom jeans that are this labor intensive and allow you to show off your creative

skills are sure to be the talk of the town for months and months.

.Denim bags

Denim bags are popping up everywhere! Here's what makes mine unique....

  Every one of my bags is handmade and designed by me. I guarantee that my bags start out as a wearable jean;

I purchase them from wonderful community resource stores like The Salvation Army and Goodwill. Then, the jeans

make a trip through my washing machine in super hot water to help clean and soften the fabric even more.

It's alot of fun to come up with color combinations. Some are fun and funky, some are traditional. And, just like

jeans, the sizes of the bags vary.

All of the bags are fully lined & feature an adorable recycled denim pocket on the inside for holding keys, etc.

Then, the finishing flair is a belt that is carefully selected to make the front of the bag "POP". Some of the belts

are hand knitted by me.

And, of course, the handles and closure are carefully selected to complement the bag.
