Grumbling in the New Testament

• Matthew 20:11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house

• We can grumble because God is gracious to those who we think don't deserve it.

Grumbling in the New Testament

• Luke 5:30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

• We can grumble because too many of the wrong kinds of people are coming into our church.

• Acts 6:1 Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected.

• We can grumble because we feel overlooked by church leadership.

• 1 Peter 4:9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling

• We can grumble when others are not thankful for what we do

• John 6:41,43 They grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves

• We can grumble because the preaching is stretching our minds

Grumbling in the New Testament

• John 6:61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this?

• We can grumble when the preaching doesn't fit our theology

• John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

• John 6.65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father”

• John 7:12 “…there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.”

• We can grumble over the direction the leadership is taking the church

• 1 Corinthians 10:1-11. (1Co 10:1-11) 1For I want you to know, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.6Now these things took place as examples for us, that we might not desire evil as they did.

• 7Do not be idolaters as some of them were; as it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 8We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day. 9We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, 10nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. 11Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.

Shining lights in a twisted generation

• Philippians 2.12-16. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

Grumbling shrivels our souls

Thanksgiving enlarges it

We can grumble because

• God is gracious to those who we think don't deserve it

• too many of the wrong kinds of people are coming into our church

• we feel overlooked by church leadership• others are not thankful for what we do • the preaching is stretching our minds • the preaching doesn't fit our theology• of the direction the leadership is taking the

church • our standard of living drops or we long for the

good old days

Grumbling shrivels our souls
