INTRODUCTION - From Carnality To Spirituality

INTRODUCTION

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ,

for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone

who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith;

as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

Romans 1:16-17

INTRODUCTION RIGHTEOUSNESS of God =

1. Right standing

2. Right believing

3. Right living - actions

3 Aspects Together

It takes faith to live out all these 3 aspects of Righteousness.

Romans 1:17

For in it the Righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written,

“The just shall LIVE by FAITH”

I. JUSTIFICATION is:

Being accepted by God

Peace with God

Right standing with God

In relationship with God

Having access to God 24/7/365

1. When we receive Christ as Lord and Saviour, we are justified.

Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your

mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart

that God has raised Him from the dead, you will

be saved. For with the heart one believes

unto righteousness, and with the mouth

confession is made unto salvation.

2. To be justified means we are accepted by God fully.

Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive the

spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received

the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out,

“Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself

bears witness with our spirit

that we are children of God ..

3. We are then a new creation i.e.

A. Our old life has been crucified and died with Christ.

B. We now have the new life of Christ in us.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,

he is a new creation; old things have passed away;

behold, all things have become new.

4. We live this new life by faith in God.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ;

it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and

the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith

in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself

for me.

5. As we live by faith,

God’s grace flows into our lives by

the Holy Spirit to enable and empower us to do so.

6B. This tension between the old life and the new life is our journey to grow in spiritual maturity

becoming like Christ Jesus.

6A. As we live the new life of Christ in us, we must be conscious that our old life does not resurrect.

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and

the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one

another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

Why Grow

in Spiritual Maturity?

Why Grow In Spiritual Maturity? Already but Not Yet

The kingdom is now; the kingdom is not yet.

I am saved; I am being saved.

I am sanctified; I am being sanctified.

I am a new creation; I await resurrection.

I am now a child of God; I am exhorted to endure to the end.

Why Grow In Spiritual Maturity? Already but Not Yet

We are already seated in heavenly places with Jesus (Ephesians 2:6); but at present, we are living in earthly

bodies of which we groan (2 Corinthians 5:2).

We have already died to sin and cannot live in it any longer (Romans 6:1-7); yet

we must consider ourselves dead to sin and not let it rule in our lives (Romans 6:11-19).

Why Grow In Spiritual Maturity? Already but Not Yet

We have already “put off” the old-self and “put on” the new-self (Ephesians 4:22-24); yet we are instructed

to “put to death” and “put off” that which pertains to our earthly nature and

to “put on” that which pertains to our new-self (Colossians 3:1-14).

Why Grow In Spiritual Maturity? Already but Not Yet

Our Sanctification is positional (past), progressive (present), and perfect (future).

We are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17);

yet we must be transformed by the renewal of our mind (Romans 12:2).

II. SANCTIFICATION - Disciple’s Journey from Carnality to Spirituality

Two Key Aspects of the Disciple’s

Journey:

A. our walk with God

B. our serving God

Our Sanctification must be solidly based on our Justification.

Our Sanctification must never be done

to attain our Justification.

Both our Justification and Sanctification are entirely due to the Mercy and Grace

of God.

II. The Disciple’s Journey from Carnality to Spirituality. 1. Carnality is:

Our Old Man

Our Sinful Nature The Flesh

Babies in Christ

Drinking Milk

Being Divisive Envy

Jealousy Mere Men

Page 5: PowerPoint Presentation · The will of the carnal believer is natural and un-enlightened. 6B. The will of the spiritual believer is aligned with the Father-God. Colossians 1:9-11

1 Corinthians 3:1-5 And I, brethren, could not speak to you

as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.

I fed you with milk and not with solid food;

for until now you were not able to receive it,

and even now you are still not able;

for you are still carnal [flesh].

For where there are envy, strife,

and divisions among you,

are you not carnal and behaving

like mere men? For when one says,

“I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,”

are you not carnal?

2. Spiritual Life is:

Having Christ in You

Knowing the Holy Spirit is in You

Knowing the Father-God dwells in you

Maturing in Christ

Eating Solid Food

Walking in Unity

3A. The source of living in carnality is dependency on self.

CARNALITY - To be carnal is to live our lives yielded to

and directed by our sinful nature.

Romans 7:14

For we know that the law is spiritual,

but I am carnal, sold under sin. Galatians 5:16 I say then: Walk

in the Spirit, and you shall not

fulfill the lust of the flesh.

3B. The source of living spiritually is total dependency on God.

SPIRITUALITY - to be spiritual

is to live our lives yielded to and directed by the Holy

Spirit.

4A. The mind of the believer living in carnality is natural and corrupt.

4B. The mind of the spiritual believer

is renewed and receives revelation.

Romans 8:5-11 Those who live according to

the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh

desires; but those who live in accordance with

the Spirit have their minds set on what the

Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh

is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is

life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh

is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s

law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the

realm of the flesh cannot please God.

5A. The emotion of living in carnality is natural and corrupt.

5B. The emotion of the spiritual believer is Spirit-led.

Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

6A. The will of the carnal believer is natural and un-enlightened.

6B. The will of the spiritual believer is

aligned with the Father-God.

by Casting Crowns

8A. As the believer desires to grow spiritually, there will be grace.

8B. This grace flows to us by the Holy Spirit.

Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed,

not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out

your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in

you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

8C. The Holy Spirit enables and empowers the believer accordingly.

Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation

to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according

to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of

the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from

the law of sin and death.

CONCLUSION

Jeremiah 17:5-6 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed

is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh

his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord.

For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and

shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit

the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt

land which is not inhabited.

CONCLUSION

Jeremiah 17:7-8 Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree

planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by

the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf

will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought,

nor will cease from yielding fruit.
