Alternative solar cells Potential raw material:
The project: Extract the starting materials needed to make
carbon-based solar cells from agricultural feedstocks.
Use the resulting “active inks” to form solar cells by spray-
painting or inkjet printing
Collaborators at Cambridge and Kyoto Institute of Technology

Solar cells convert light to electricity -
what about turning electricity to light? Solid-state lighting:
No gas-filled tubes or toxic metals, thin as a sheet of paper, highly efficient
According to the Department of Energy: “converting half of all lighting to solid-state will cut
energy use by 120 GW, save $100 billion / yr and reduce CO2 production by 350 megatons / yr”
Jared Delcamp (Monticello, KY, UK B.S. Chemistry 2005)
Kate Oliver (Lexington KY, Dunbar H.S. 2005)
Matthew Bruzek (Marshall, MN), current UK Ph.D. student
what about turning one type of light into another?
Bio-imaging; detecting deep tumors with light
This change in research focus would not be possible
without State support

Spinal cord research & Dr. Harkema.
• Researchers at UofL leading team
helping people regain the use of
limbs
• Epidural stimulation of the spinal
cord is a promising research
therapy with the goal of helping
people regain their ability to walk

Heart research & Dr. Bolli
• With colleagues in Boston, Dr.
Roberto Bolli developed a stem
cell treatment that appears to
reverse damage from heart
attacks
• Treatment uses a patient’s own
cardiac cells to rejuvenate the
heart

James Graham Brown Cancer Center
• Physicians and caregivers
continue to seek new and better
ways to provide treatment to
patients
• Researchers use tobacco plants
to deliver a vaccine to prevent
cervical cancer
• Researchers utilize unused
computer time at schools
throughout Kentucky to search for
potential drug designs to fight
cancer

UK Markey Cancer Center Receives
NCI Designation
• The UK Markey Cancer Center has become
the 68th medical center in the country to
receive National Cancer Institute designation,
and is the only NCI-designated cancer center in
the state of Kentucky.
• UK joins an elite group of medical centers
across the country who have earned the
"trifecta" of national federal funding. UK is one
of only 22 medical centers in the U.S. that have
earned an NCI designation, have a federally
funded Alzheimer's disease center (Sanders-
Brown Center on Aging), and have earned the
Clinical and Translational Science Awards
grants.

• Houses, incubates and
accelerates life sciences
companies like TNG
Pharmaceuticals, PGXL, and
others.
• Provides wet- and dry-lab space
• Serves companies associated
with UofL and those outside the
university
• Assist the region in retaining
homegrown biotechnology
companies, as well as attracting
others

Examples of early ROI on University related R&D and investments
University of Kentucky Allylix
Allylix spun out of UK in 2002 to develop renewable chemicals. The Company has raised over $30MM from private investors across the country and has over 20 employees in Lexington.
University of Louisville Potentia Pharmaceuticals
Potentia's founder, Cedric Francois, came to Kentucky to complete a Ph.D. in Physiology from UofL. He was a member of the research team that performed the first successful hand transplant and was part of the Louisville Face Transplant Team that
supported the first human face transplantation in Lyon (France) in 2005. Dr. Francois founded Potentia (based in Louisville) to develop a drug to treat age-related macular degeneration, which Potentia Licensed to Alcon (now part of Novartis) in 2009. Dr.
Francois subsequently founded a new company, Apellis Pharmaceuticals, that is based in Louisville.
Northern Kentucky University Earthineer
Earthineer was founded by NKU graduate (BA English, 1997, MS Computer Science 2009) Dan Adams to develop a social network around sustainable living through farming, homesteading, and self-reliance. Dan founded the company while he was a CS
graduate student, participated in NKU's student accelerator, INKUBATOR, and currently has over 16,000 registered customers on the site.
