• 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat.*

• They are more afraid of becoming fat than they are of cancer, war, or losing both of their parents.

• In a survey of girls 9 and 10 years old, 40% have tried to lose weight.**

• 91% of cisgender women are unhappy with their bodies and resort to dieting

• (5% of these women naturally possess the body type often portrayed by Americans in the media.*)

“The Body Is Not an Apology is committed to cultivating global Radical Self Love and Body Empowerment.

SONYA RENEE TAYLOR

We believe that discrimination, social inequality, and injustice are manifestations of our inability to make peace with the body, our own and others.

• FAT is not a bad word

• The Diet (anti-fat) Industry brings in over 65 billion dollars a year in the US alone

• Regardless of size, most people fear becoming or “being” fat

• Body size/shape intersects with countless other marginalized identities

• Fat hatred affects all bodies

• The sooner we destigmatize “FAT”, the sooner all bodies sizes and shapes

will become okay

This removes weight from the equation

THE “REFRAMING HEALTH BASICS”

Being fat isn’t an indicator of being unhealthy, and thinness isn’t an assurance of good health.

Treating your body “well” because you appreciate it. Not because you

want to change it.

Health at Every Size is based on the simple premise that the best way to improve health is to honor your body. It supports people in adopting health habits for the sake of health and well-being (rather than weight control). Health at Every Size encourages:

• Accepting diversity in bodies

• Eating in way that honors your body

• Finding the joy in movement.

“I DON’T CARE ABOUT SIZE, THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT PEOPLE JUST NEED TO BE HEALTHY!”

Who is instantly exiled the second health becomes the top measurement of worth and importance?

• People with physical disabilities. • People with chronic or incurable ailments. • People who live in poverty and can’t afford balanced meals. • People who don’t have the resources or education required to learn about how to take care of

their bodies. • People who live with a mental illness that doesn’t allow them to take care of themselves at all. • People so focused on just surviving that there isn’t any energy left to focus on physical

maintenance.

Lots and lots of people who are unable to fully participate in our “wellness culture” because of the body and life they were born into. Defining worthiness by health and fitness level is not just about size discrimination. It’s also about classism. Racism. Ableism. And much more.

We have been taught as a society that IF we achieve the ideal body that we see in traditional media (and not before) we will obtain:

• Love • Worthiness• Success • (and ultimately)

Happiness.

So we’ve invested everything...
