Collaborations for a Regional Disease
We were invited by the Oregon Health Authority to conduct environmental sampling in Klamath Falls, OR based on recent detections in canines.

Klamath Falls, OR
Based on locations of positive canines, property access, wind patterns, and soil properties, a plan emerges…

Collaborations at Work
Even though the samples taken were negative, this was a great example of how we can work with other states to address a regional problem.

I’ll scratch behind your ear if you scratch behind mine
Oregon Health Authority helped fund our Phase 2 Canine Serology Survey
233 samples collected from 8 counties in SE Washington31 (13.3%)- IgG positive (exposure during some point in its life)5 (2.1%) - IgM positive (recent exposure within one year)1 - positive for both IgM and IgG
*Veterinarians reported that almost none of the dogs had any symptoms

More Thinking Outside the Box
Cryptococcus gattii SurveillanceEnvironmental sampling using…seafoam?
From 2009-2012, 6 porpoises tested positive for C. gattii.Seafoam formation results in a natural concentration of fungal spores on the water surface and is used in other marine fungal studies.
Stay tuned as we develop this method of fungal surveillance…

Looking Ahead to 2019
Some things that we are planning for:• Lab Accreditation• Field Surveillance Methods Accreditation• Expanded mosquito trapping in Western Washington• Expanding tick surveillance to counties with little or no data• Canine serology for Coccidioides
