Are you at risk for burnout?
Have you become cynical or critical at work?
Do you drag yourself to work and have trouble getting started once you arrive?
Have you become irritable or impatient with co-workers, customers or clients?
Do you lack the energy to be consistently productive?
Do you lack satisfaction from your achievements?
Are you using food, drugs or alcohol to feel better or simply not feel?
Have your sleep habits or appetite changed?
Are you troubled by unexplained headaches, backaches or other physical complaints?

Causes of Burnout Syndrome Among Nurses

Burnout
How do we
treat it?
Healthy Nurse=Healthy Patient
The American Nurse Association (ANA):
“A healthy nurse is one who lives life to
its fullest capacity across the
wellness/illness continuum, as they
become stronger role models, advocates,
and educators, personally, for their
families, their communities and work
environments, and ultimately for their
patients.”

Healing Environment, and Cultural Diversity

Core Value 5: Holistic Nurse Self-Reflection and Self-Care
• Self-reflection-turning inward to examine one’s
thoughts, values, beliefs, experiences, behaviors and inner wisdom-enhances self-understanding and facilitates reflective practice
• The nurse values himself/herself and his/her calling to holistic nursing as a life purpose
(AHNA & ANA, 2013, p. 8)
Self-Care The nurse’s self-reflection, self-assessment, self-care, healing and personal development are necessary for service to others, growth/change in the nurse’s own well-being, and understanding of the nurse’s own personal journey.

How do we find meaning?
If you were given a camera,
and asked to take pictures
of what you love…
what would you see?
What patterns emerge?
90% of people took pictures of others,
in relationships with significant others.
Next most common was photos of nature,
the beauty of the world.

Purpose
That which gives
meaning to one’s life
“Purpose is actively living your
values, leaning toward
compassion for others, and
getting up in the morning to
contribute value to the world.”
Richard J. Leider
Why did you choose nursing?
• To be of service/help people
• Flexibility
• It was a “calling”
• I have a family member who is a nurse
• Career opportunities/growth
• Independence/autonomy
Purpose as the key to longevity?
“How to adult on purpose” -Dr. Christine Whelan
• One study of 18-24 year olds believe having a clear purpose in life is a big part of being a “real” adult • 86% young adults making decisions aligned with purpose
make them an adult
• 43% clear on what they want
• 30% know why they are here
• 36% of 18-24 year olds say the career path they have chosen is aligned with their purpose

The Power of Purpose
Three themes:
1. More reflective
2. More courageous
3. Clear earlier about
purpose

Conclusion: “The Power of Purpose”
“…purpose naturally resides deep inside the
human soul”-Richard J. Leider
The Purpose Journey
Our priorities and values shift…purpose is not
discovered once and then we are done with it. It is re-
examined at various points throughout the life cycle,
typically during crisis and major life transitions.
– Richard J. Leider
Myths Around Purpose
1. To have purpose means I must do something original.
2. Only a few special people have true purpose in their lives.
3. True purpose comes as inspiration or revelation, until that time comes, I might as well keep plodding ahead.
4. Purpose is a luxury. I need to earn money and make a living.
You already have it…
Unlocking your life purpose is a process of self-awareness
Purpose is a Choice
It is the choice to bring who we are – our gifts and talents to respond to something we believe in, something larger than ourselves.
Purpose Moments
There are moments when you get a hint of your life’s purpose.
“I was just trying to get home from work.”- Rosa Parks

Life is our Moments: Time is our most precious currency Do you discard these moments?
…or do you savor them?
How to Live on Purpose:
• Unlock your story
• Doing a deed
• Experiencing a value
• Suffering
• Unlock your gifts
• Unlock your curiosity
Unlocking Your Story: Three Paths to Purpose
Path 1: Doing a deed
Path 2: Experiencing a value
Path 3: Suffering
Path 1: “Doing a Deed”
Do you love what you do?
• Volunteer work
• Community work
• Paid work
Consider…What are you doing when you lose track of time?
Path 2: “Experiencing a Value”
Who do you love to serve?
Values Factor
“…until you understand specifically what you
truly value most, what truly inspired you, who
you truly are, and what your true purpose is, a
completely inspired, fulfilling life will elude you.” (Demartini, 2013, p. 2)

Experiencing a Value Values Factor
Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words, Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits, Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.
-Mahatma Gandhi
What Do You Value? Path 3: “Suffering”
Sometimes purpose is discovered through a crisis
The benefit of a crisis is often the letting go of petty concerns, conflicts, and the need for control and the realization that life is short and every moment is
precious
How to live on Purpose:
• Unlock your story
• Doing a deed
• Experiencing a value
• Suffering
• Unlock your gifts
• Unlock your curiosity
Unlock Your Gifts
“Purpose feeds three deep spiritual hungers: to connect deeply with
the power of choice in our lives; to actively know that we have a
unique gift to give in the world; and to use our gifts to make a
contribution in some meaningful way.”-Richard J. Leider

Purpose Statement
“The reason I get up in the morning to go to work is
to:
awaken, ignite, organize, teach, support, empower,
develop, accept, encourage, help, care, inspire,
motivate, earn, enhance, serve, lead, act upon,…”

Passion. Purpose. Impact.
“Whatever you have to do in your life today, make a
choice, to do what you need to do based on your
purpose…dig down deep…find your dream.
Empower yourself. Do what you have to do to live
your best life, NOW! Do not wait. Life is way too
fragile. Take your passion, align it with your
purpose, and that’s how you create impact.”
-Todd Durkin
