Key issues – the eGovernment outlookKey issues – the eGovernment outlook
• E-democracy - a more equitable relationship between government and the public
• The electronic health service - everything from electronic health records to NHS procurement
• Boosting the local economy - Business Link network, providing advice and support for small businesses over the internet
• Mobile and wireless government – transactions, information, WiFI access points (gvt employees and general public)
• Freedom of information – management and delivery of electronic information
• Interactive digital TV – webcasting and other viewing methods
• Smartcard services – smartcard access to public services across both central and local government (‘Connexions’ card)
• Transformation and culture change - internal processes, management and culture. The goal of a transforming organisation is to shape its services more closely to the needs and wants of its customers or citizens.
• Access for all - accessibility beyond web services to all digital formats including digital TV, smartcards and mobile phones
Convergence (VoIP) – what is it?
Convergence is talked about in many ways by various people
Sometimes the language or messages used can confuse
– Equipment Vendors talk about the applications that run over IP networks - IP Telephony (the application to deliver VoIP), Contact Centre solutions or Unified Communications.
– Service Providers talk about IP networks and how to ensure they are configured to run the range of applications available from the vendors e.g. Remote working solutions.
– Resellers talk about how they can design, source, implement and manage a total solution for a customer, bringing in the business benefits for individual elements or a total converged solution.
– End users are asking questions over the business benefits of Convergence (mostly VoIP) and wondering when and how to take advantage of the various options.
VoIP (for Business)VoIP (for Business)
Voice Over IP (VoIP) is a term used in IP Telephony for a set of facilities for managing the delivery of voice information using IP
IP Networks form the the core technology for new voice services
MPLS based VPNs are key to the emergence of Business VoIPQoS guarantees carrier class voice over IP infrastructure
QoS Over DSL (QoDSL) allows carrier class voice over Broadband/DSL
What is QoS and Why Is It Used?
QoS (Quality of Service) is used to prioritise delay sensitive and real-time applications across the same network infrastructure
Voice/Video/Mission critical data = Low Latency Traffic
E-mail,Web browsing, File transfer = Other
traffic
Tiscali network is engineered to support Quality Over contended and non-contended ADSL and SDSL
QoS is an integral part of the Tiscali VPN solution VPN can be mix and match – don’t have to run QoS at every site!

What impact do you want to make?
• What business benefits & new ways of working do you want to employ?
• What resources & applications do you want to take advantage of?– Collaboration and more efficient data sharing capabilities
– Presence management and Unified Communications
– Remote/flexible working solutions
– Virtualised contact centres
– Disaster recovery solutions

QoS - What is being used in the private & public sectors
Objective:
• Drive to increase ability to work from home – supporting the government strategy for Teleworker.
• Requirement to provide QoS enable Teleworker Broadband solution for remote sites, which can support Alcatel IP Telephone and Laptop or Desktop PC.
Solution:
• Tiscali evaluated remote user Voice and Data requirements
• Recommended a scalable IPVPN solution
– Migrate from existing dial infrastructure – access limitations and high cost
– Scalable access infrastructure – Tiscali high-speed Business Broadband, and MPLS Core network infrastructure.
– Mission critical business applications, content and real-time collaboration through high speed, low latency services
– Security through MPLS network
– support and monitoring of the entire underlying infrastructure, allowing the organisation to continue to focus precious internal resources on core business activities.
