Cambodia Cambodia is one of the most

beautiful countries in Southeast Asia. It is the center of Khmer kingdom Of Angkor, a great empire that dominated Southeast Asia for 600 dramatic political problems in Cambodia. Cambodia has an Ancient heritage of court music and dances. The dances are traditionally performed by women and accompanied by the Pinpeat orchestra consisting of the Sralai Thom(a type of oboe) gongs, xylophones, drums, and singers.

Musical Characteristics

It is more on religious dancing.Some dances are accompanied

by PINPEAT orchestra.It depicts stories and ancient

myths.Cambodia art music is highly

influenced by ancient forms as well as Hindu forms.

Pinpeat Orchestra

The Pinpeat is musical ensemble or orchestra that usually accompanies ceremonial music of the royal courts and temples. This group usually has nine or ten instruments their music is always part of their court dances, masked, plays, shadows plays and religious ceremonies.

Instruments used in Cambodia

Oneat The Oneat is a percussion instrument that is tuned to pitch and is quite similar to xylophone. It is built in the shape of a carved rectangular boat.

SAMPHOR

The samphor is used to lead the orchestra . It is barrel-shaped and is always held horizontally. It has two heads, with slightly larger than the other. Is played using the palm of the hands.

KONGVONG The kongvong has both large and

small versions of the instrument. The circular frame of the Kong is made of bamboo and the round gongs are hung horizontally by cane strings across two bamboo frames on the upper of the structures. The pitch varies according to the size the gongs plate.

SKORTHOM

Is a bass drum and is used in most of the popular Khemer orchestras. It is made of hardwood which produces a high sound.

It is a simple percussion instrument. It is made of brass mixed with cooper. It is consists of two kinds of metal and the sounds produced is much sharper than if only one is used.
