PowerLab Dissectible Machines 62-005
The PowerLab Dissectible Machines System is a complete trainer that covers awide range of dc, Single and Three Phase ac motors and generators. The traineris built around the unique Feedback Dissectible Machine, designed to introducestudents to the basic principles of electrical motors and generators.
It is supplied with manuals on CD which provide a step-by-step guide to settingup and carrying out a wide range of assignments.
The trainer includes power supplies, drive and control equipment, loading andinstrumentation that are all provided in the form of panels which mount into apurpose designed bench-standing frame, that can be easily slotted in and outas required. The system provides a dynamic approach to understanding electrical machinesfor a wide range of student and technician engineers.
It gives a step-by-step course of theory and experiment using the versatile andextensive dissectible machine.
The characteristics of the machines that can be assembled closely representthose of their industrial equivalents.
The modular panels that make up the heart of the system are availableseparately, enabling those with power supplies and metering equipment toconfigure a trainer that suits their needs.
The frame is constructed of an advanced, fibre-loaded, rigid plastics materialwhich is electrically insulated for safety.
The Dissectible Machine
The focus of this system is a fully dissectibleexperimental machines kit. This allows overfifty machine assemblies to be built coveringa wide range of ac and dc Single and ThreePhase motor and generator assemblies. The machines that may be assembled use lowvoltages, have protected rotating parts andoperate at relatively low power levels, therebyminimising the risk of accidents. Nominaloperating voltages are 50V dc and 125V ac.
The components of the system include:-
• Baseplate• Frame Ring• Shaft• Fixed and removable bearing housings• Wound Stator• Squirrel Cage Rotor• Hand Crank• Centrifugal Switch• Coupling• Brush Holders and Brushes• Commutator/Slip Rings• Interpoles• Armature Poles and Hub• Field Poles• Armature, Field and Interpole coils• Compound Field Coils• Tools and Hardware
The separate field poles, interpoles, armaturepoles, hub, 12-slot stator and squirrel cagerotor are made from electrical steel laminationsriveted together. Coils are wound fromsynthetic enamel-covered copper wire andwrapped with a strong cloth-base tape. Each has ‘coil finish’ and identification bands.A stainless steel shaft of high corrosion resist-ance is supported plain and self-aligning ballrace bearings. These are held in aluminiumalloy housings fixed to a cast aluminium base-plate. The shaft speed can range from very lowvalues up to 3600 rev/min (for ac machines), or5000 rev/min (for dc machines) according to theapplication. The commutator, slip rings and brush gear areof simple design to facilitate armature assemblyand give good accessibility.A sturdy component storage panel is providedfor easy inventory control.

loads and a resistor/capacitor unit for ac singlephase and three phase machines. The mechanical loading is by a friction (Prony)brake, which is calibrated for quantitivemeasurement.
CoursewareAll of the equipment is supplied complete withcourseware, which is manual-based, andincludes theoretical information, practicalassemblies, typical results and questions withtypical answers. It is profusely illustrated andgives circuits, step-by-step assemblyinstructions and procedures.
As the courseware for each assembly isstand-alone, users have the ability to selectthose relevant to their particular syllabusrequirements and to create a practical andrealistic workstation to suit courses at anylevel from vocational to graduate engineer.
Curriculum CoverageThe unique character of the DissectibleMachine System enables students to constructand investigate over fifty different machineassemblies. The System may be used for studyover a wide range of topics from the principlesof magnetic circuits and electrical machinetheory through to Three Phase synchronousmachines. By selection from the coursewaresupplied and theassemblies that may beimplemented with thistrainer, users can createa practical and realisticworkstation to suit coursesat any level from vocationalto graduate engineer.
By using a dissectible machinesystem, students are able to seeclearly the component parts ofthe machine and how they areinterconnected, both electricallyand mechanically. They mayassemble machines from thesecomponent parts and theninvestigate the operation andcharacteristics of them. dc Machine components ac Machine components
