5.0.2 - Preparing the Demo Environment

It is in your best interests to ensure the demo environment you will be demonstrating is clean

& tidy before you begin. For this reason we would recommend, where possible, you log in to

your demo at least 15mins prior to delivery and check the following;

Familiarise yourself with the environment during this time and check any specific

features you are expecting to demo.

Ensure you are logged into the CMC GUI via a web browser (Internet Explorer).

Most importantly, be crystal clear with yourself on what it is you plan to show. A full

demo of every feature described below (with questions) can take several hours. If you

only have a short time slot be sure to focus on the key points that address the

customer’s pain points and will drive value home to them.

Ensure that you have booked the demo for sufficient time so as not to have the demo

end before you are finished with the customer.

Check the Demo to ensure that cards in PCI slots are not all mapped & that there is

un-configured disk storage – We will be mapping a PCIe card, configuring and

assigning storage in the demo. (See LAB2 for details on how to do this for the PCIe

Cards and LAB3 for the Storage & PERC8.)

PCIe Screen should look like this (LAB 2):

Shared PERC8 Screen should look like this (LAB 3):

Virtual Disks Screen should look like this (LAB 3):

You may receive a certificate error. If this is the case select the option to continue to

the website and the CMC login screen will appear.

You can remove this error by adding the certificate to the browser

Use Internet Explorer or Firefox for the demo as it has been noted that there may be

some issues with the Chrome browser

5.0.3 - Preparing your agenda for the demonstration

You should have an understanding of the customer’s anticipated business need and their

growth expectations prior to scheduling a demo. You should also tailor each demo to

illustrate the deployment, configuration and/or reconfiguration of the type of systems the

customer intends to use.

Before scheduling a demo, you must decide how you will articulate the product features,

workloads and business and technical value. Work with your customer through question and

answer sessions to decide which features and capabilities you will focus on to be most

effective.

The idea is not to present a “How-To” session, but to focus on the value of the product

and/or solution. Even if the customer representative is not overly technical, you can

demonstrate what the product does and how that can benefit the customer.

You should have a good understanding of the customer’s current infrastructure:

Remote office needs

Operating Systems & Key Applications (Database types etc.)

Server, Network and Storage Platforms

Reporting/Management Tools

Understand the customer’s desired infrastructure ‘Wins’ Examples:

Ease of Management of remote offices

Application requirements

Storage Requirements

Data Growth projections

ROI

…add relevant areas of interest to the customer

5.0.5 - Set the Scene

It can be easy to forget that the customer has no idea what it is they are looking at, so take some time emphasizing the following;

o Explain that the purpose is to demonstrate the benefits and key features, not to

provide a “How To” session

o Explain that the demo will be either a simulation or a connection to a remote lab,

where a combination of virtual machines and physical hardware will be used to

provide a live demonstration of the features and capabilities that will be covered

o Set up and current configuration information

o Connectivity methods that you will be using (HTTP)

o Introduce the management interfaces you plan to use (PowerEdge VRTX CMC)

Ensure you are familiar with the VRTX Dashboard and Sales KIT 1. http://salesedge.dell.com/tools/virtualsaleskits/summary.html?sideNavId=AD-

5.1 LAB 1: PowerEdge VRTX CMC

5.1.1 - Introduction

This demonstration is primarily aimed at the CIO/CFO level and IT management staff; it also provides a useful quick introduction for staff who are not familiar with Dell PowerEdge VRTX. Duration: 15-25 minutes. Dell designed the PowerEdge VRTX based on customer feedback regarding the challenges our customers faced with IT infrastructure management in small and remote offices. Power requirements and noise levels are critical, as well as having sufficient resources to run the workloads, in addition to comprehensive remote management capabilities which were all factors considered in the design of the PowerEdge VRTX. This is a technical demo (but avoids a very technically detailed installation) that is designed to illustrate the simplicity and ease of use of the VRTX, while at the same time showing the power of the solution. The outcome of this is to demonstrate that the productivity of costly IT resources which have traditionally been assigned to small and remote office management can be greatly improved. You can, and should, give this level of demo in approximately an hour. You want the customer to think “Wow that was easy”! If you frame the discussion correctly during the demo, you will get the desired reaction.

In this Lab you will be performing the following tasks:

Setting the scene for the customer

Logon to the PowerEdge VRTX CMC

Reviewing Power Configuration and budgeting

Launching Remote Console for Server 2 and reviewing the hardware in Device

Manager before Powering off the server - so after LAB 3 is complete, we can power

on the server to show the components added are seen within the OS.

Configuring Storage and assigning the storage and a PCIe Network card to a server

Finishing off the demo by looking at Monitoring, reporting and firmware updates

5.1.2 - Talking Points:

Discuss with the customer the challenges associated with managing remote offices or small offices without dedicated support staff on site.

PowerEdge VRTX Chassis Management Controller provides a single pane of glass to manage your VRTX and components. Simplicity and ease of use being key points.

Power requirements in the small office can be problematic

It is critical to keep noise levels to a minimum and VRTX is very quiet operationally

Standardize on a single platform across all sites and HQ data centre to reduce complexity and costs of disparate hardware

5.1.3 - Technical Selling Points:

Ease of use is the key point here with the ability to simply manage the system from a web interface.

Power may be an issue for customers with remote offices. The PowerEdge VRTX can help to address some of the Power limitations by way of its Power Management features

Flexibility and the ability to grow are worth considering as the VRTX does not have to be fully populated on initial purchase

Reduce floor space taken by hardware sprawl

Chassis Power

1. Next click on the Power Tab on the right hand pane and select Power Monitoring.

Talking Points:

Explain the capabilities of Power Monitoring & Capping:

Technical Selling Points:

In a remote office the power circuit supplying the servers may not be dedicated, and in the UK have a limit of 13A. Now this power circuit will usually be shared among other electrical items such as the kettle, refrigerator, photocopier, PCs etc. The VRTX can address this challenge by way of Power Budgeting.

Gotchas:

If you power down the chassis and have the CMC routed through the internal switch you will need to be physically present to power on the chassis

2. Now select Configuration in the right hand pane.

Power off a Server – WinServer-01

Go back to the VRTX CMC Console and select WinServer-01 in the left hand pane. Select the

Power tab from the right hand pane and choose Graceful Shutdown to power down the

server. Pop back into the Remote console to see that the server is shutting down

Talking Points:

Explain to the customer that we will power this server back on after we have allocated a PCIe Network card and storage a little later on. The reason we are doing this is not down to VRTX but rather Operating Systems do not like resources appearing as though hot plug as registries do not handle this well as it could be perceived that an unstable environment is a VRTX issue.

Gotchas:

Ensure you are on the Server here and not the chassis otherwise it could be embarrassing!!!

Technical Selling Points: It is good to point out here that when we power on the server we can monitor this via the remote console

5.2 LAB 2: PCIe

5.2.1 - Introduction

The PowerEdge VRTX features 8 flexible PCIe slots, has the ability to assign any of the PCIe

slot resources to any of the server slots without the need for powering down the entire

chassis.

You will have to reboot a server in order to make an assignment but this is more a

requirement of the Microsoft and VMware operating systems as they do not like to have

PCIe cards warm-plugged.

In this Lab you will be reviewing the PCIe screens of the VRTX, identifying the main configuration pages and assigning a PCIe Network card to a server.

5.2.2 - Talking Points:

Repurposing a server may require additional PCIe cards to be installed or removed from a

server which will require a technician to be onsite to perform the work.

5.2.3 - Technical Selling Points:

We can assign PCIe card resources to servers remotely without the need of having to reboot

the entire chassis. This enhances the remote management capability in the event of a server

being reconfigured.

GPU cards are supported on VRTX to support a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.

5.2.4 - Technical Objections and Query Handling:

Question: How do you make a PCIe slot available to a server node in PowerEdge VRTX Answer:

The assignments are made via the Chassis Management Controller (CMC) Question: How do I manage adapters in the PCIe slots? Answer:

Once mapped to a server via the CMC management of the adapter is done from that server’s iDRAC7 or OpenManage Server Administrator

5.3 LAB 3: Storage

5.3.1 - Introduction

The PowerEdge VRTX has internal storage options allowing for up to a massive 48TB

capacity. This is in addition to the internal disks within the servers themselves.

In this Lab you will be reviewing the storage management features, creating a RAID group

and assigning the virtual disk to a server.

5.3.2 - Talking Points:

In addition to being able to assign a server it’s own dedicated storage pool, the option to create a shared storage pool is available in order for all of the servers to use. This enables Live Migration in a virtualized environment inside the chassis without the need to purchase a SAN. This avoids the complication of powering, cabling and managing a SAN.

5.3.3 - Technical Selling Points:

The internal storage of the VRTX is a feature that allows for flexible growth. The disk slots do

not have to be fully populated on initial purchase and additional disks can be added as

required. If the internal storage capacity of the VRTX becomes insufficient then and external

MD1200 disk array can be connected.

5.3.4 - Technical Objections and Query Handling:

Question: How do you manage and provision your shared storage in PowerEdge VRTX? Answer:

All of the management for the shared storage is done in the Chassis Management Controller (CMC). OMSS will see the storage adaptor but cannot manage it,

Question: How are events in Shared Storage reported? Answer:

They are NOT visible to the OS on a server but come from the CMC Question: How do I update my Shared Storage? Answer:

You must use CMC to update it Question: How can I configure my Shared Storage? Answer:

You can use the CMC GUI, racadm, or WSMAN interfaces Question: Can Virtual Disks be assigned to multiple blades? Answer:

YES, but they need to be part of Windows Failover Cluster or formatted as VMWare’s VMFS.

Question: If I don’t add the server to the cluster – What can happen? (shared storage) Answer:

You can cause data-corruption by over-writing your data because it is not aware that two or more system are writing to the same Virtual Disk

Question: Can CMC manage my storage local to the server node? Answer:

No, You will need iDRAC7 / LC or OMSA / OMSS to do it Question: What types of hard drives are supported by the VRTX shared storage? Answer: 2.5in and 3.5in NLSAS, SAS or SAS SSD
