what does/should it do?1. Workflow Management: support the eresources lifestyle, tracking,

notifications, status, etc.

2. License Management: manage license details, storage of agreements, display terms of licenses to external users

3. Administrative Information Storage: admin websites, contacts, usernames, passwords, etc.

4. Statistics Maintenance: obtain, gather and organize usage statistics, including counter and sushi applications

5. Acquisitons Functionalty: budget, fund management, cost data

6. Interoperability: auto updates, work with other systems including ILS.

erms: why do you need one?

As I would watch electronic resource librarians come and go, I always thought “there must be a better way to do that job”, or “it shouldn’t take that much time and effort”… when I took on this responsibility, boy was I in for a shock! As I inherited boxes of paper licenses and files and email archives dating back 10-15 years, I was completely overwhelmed.

The best decision I ever made was to implement CUFTS. It started out as a better solution for a resolver… but it was the implementation of the ERMS that made the biggest difference in my ability to do my job.

where do we go from here?

1. To create a CAUL Collection/E-resources Committee and for the Novanet Collections Committee to be a subcommittee of this Committee

Done! The CAUL Director is ex-officio on the Novanet committee.

2. That the CAUL Collection/E-resources Committee support the CAUL-CBUA Manager in areas of consortial purchasing, license negotiations, and the setup of a consortial ERMS

Supported consortial purchasing and license negotiations and created a licensing checklist. The committee did not investigate an ERMS.

Based on the successful implementation of CUFTS at Acadia and the existing limitations of commercial ERMS products (most specifically cost) at this time, that the CAUL-CBUA Manager and Chair determine which libraries are interested in implementing CUFTS and then proceed to negotiate a contract on behalf of those interested libraries with Simon Fraser University.

Next focus of the CAUL Collections Committee: an ERMS.

6. If a number of libraries decided to implement CUFTS, that the CAUL-CBUA Manager would also set up an installation of CUFTS to manage the CAUL-CBUA subscriptions and export updated records to members

If after an investigation of options for ERMS, CUFTS was an option that other libraries were interested in, there are some possibilities of pre-population of data based on Acadia’s installation
