    COURSE OBJECTIVES :

The objective of the course is to familiarize the participants with the causes of power quality problems, their effect on

electrical and electronic systems and various alternatives for mitigating them..

The course is meant for professionals who would like to ensure not only continuity and sufficiency of power available

to them but to secure all the plant equipments from damages and reduced life as well as maintain their process

    parameters against poor power quality.

  • POWER QUALITY

    HARMONICS & THEIR CONTROL

    INTRODUCTION ON TOPIC :

All large scale users of electricity are

normally concerned about the continuity of

power at the demand rate required by

them. An issue of bigger concern is the

quality of power received by them.

By definition power quality is : Power made

    available at stipulated voltage and

    frequency without distortion of waveform

or loss of symmetry and with minimum

    instances/duration of variations beyond

    the specified limits or unscheduled

    interruptions.

The attributes of power quality can be

    summarized as:

    MAIN ATTRIBUTES.

    Voltage within specified limits.

    Frequency within specified limits.

    P

    P

P Negligible instances of unscheduled power interruptions.

Control of transients or surges in the supply voltage (sub-cycle

    disturbances).

Control of voltage fluctuations resulting in lamp flicker.

In the case of a three phase supply, symmetry of line/phase

    voltages.

    Sinusoidal waveform without appreciable distortion.

MANY OF THE ABOVE PHENOMENON ARE UNAVOIDABLE AND ARE

PRESENT IN ANY POWER SUPPLY DUE TO :

    P Voltage drop along conductors.

    P Variable load profile.

P Process conditions such as motor starting.

P Changes in power supply network configuration.

    P Faults and interruptions.

    P Load characteristics.

THE POOR POWER QUALITY AFFECTS THE WORKING OF ELECTRICAL

AND ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENTS CONNECTED TO THE SUPPLY

SYSTEM IN A NUMBER OF WAYS, SUCH AS :

    P Overheating.

P Speed / torque variations in motors.

P Integrity of protection and metering devices.

    P Poor power factor.

P Malfunctioning of sensitive electronic devices.

P Frequent failures in power electronic equipments.

P Excessive voltage and thermal stresses.

WHAT WOULD YOU MISS BY NOT ATTENDING ?

Inadequate understanding of power quality issues and effective measures to control them can lead to down time,

reduced life of equipment, wastage of energy, freak behavior of electronic equipments / relays, and their failure and

    excessive maintenance costs.
