Power Page! Lesson 19 Exercise 1 Thirty Words Teacher Involvement Required Read, Discuss, Spell Ending Consonant Blends A One-Time Note for Instructors: To help a student know where to focus when he starts reading a word, point with a sharpened pencil to the left side (beginning) of the word. Be sure that the student reads from left to right all the way through to the end of the word. It is important that you chat about the meaning(s) of each word. Quite a few English words have more than one meaning. We want to link a word to its meaning in a beginning readers mind as early as possible. After you discuss word meanings, give the students (the entire class or per reading group) a spelling test on all of the words in the lesson. Do not skip any words. Insist on correcting errors immediately. Because ending consonant blends are easier for most students to learn than beginning consonant blends, this workbook teaches ending blends first. Every Exercise 1 in this workbook is a “Power Page”, the careful and successful completion of which will lead to reading success. -ps -ts I. gaps mops zips pets cuts tats -lt pt -mp II. melt quilt apt kept jump amp -gs -lk -ld III. legs sags milk bulk weld held -nd -nt IV. send hand end hunt ant went -sk -st V. ask desk risk test must list 5

corrections can be made at that time.) Notice that certain letters sound slightly different when put next to certain other letters. We will point those out as we go.
