SIR CHARLES KINGFORD EARLY LIFE
fifth son and seventh child of William Charles Smith, banker, and his wife Catherine
Mary, ne Kingsford.
the name Kingsford was added to the family surname in Canada; William went into
real estate business there in 1903 and later became a clerk with the Canadian Pacific
Railways.
born in Hamilton in Brisbane in 1897
he was only 18,and he joined up as a soldier in the First World War and later became
a pilot.
Died at age 38 on the 9th of February, 1935

How did his work make a difference did
make to the world
In 1935, he was trying to raise money when he disappeared while flying over the Bay
of Bengal near India. He was never seen again.
.The airport in Sydney and a street in Brisbane is named after him.
Sir Charles Kingford Smith was the first Australia to win the noble prize
A building at Brisbane Airport holds one of his planes, the Southern Cross.
His face appears on the $20 note and his picture also appears on stamps.

Why did sir Charles kingsford smith take
this path into his life
Kingsford Smith enjoyed working with his hands. He studied
mechanics and when hewas 13 studied electrical engineering atSydney Technical College. He graduated as an electrical engineer at the
age of 16.
In February 1915 he joined the australinan imperial force. In October
1916 he became a sergeant and he transferred to the Australian flyingcorp. after training in England he became the second lieuteuant in the
royal flying corp.in 1924 he realised the great potential for air hausport
in Australia.
