optimum performance on thewater.

The Sydney 47 CR (as pictured)“Gomez” is fitted with the provenYanmar 4JH3CE 56hp sail driveand 2 blade Gori folding propeller.Immediately following it’s launchin July 2004 “Gomez” went on togreat wins in it’s class at both the2004 Hamilton Island Race weekand Hamilton Island Regatta. TheYanmar / Gori combination hasprovided excellent motoringperformance for the Port PhillipBay (Victoria) based owners onthe many trips to other regatta’s“Gomez” has undertaken sincetheir initial success at theHamilton Island Regatta.

The Yanmar JH engine seriesranging from 40hp to 125hp havebeen the preferred choice byAustralia’s leading Yacht buildersfor many years, no doubt as aresult of their leading power toweight ratio’s and proven

durability with low cost of ownership. The newgeneration and recently released 4JH4 series whichhas been designed to be fully compliant with the EPATier 2 emission regulations will be offered in futureSydney 47CR models in conjunction with the Gorihi-performance 3 blade sail drive folding propeller.

Just prior to going to press on this edition of PowerNews Mr Martin Thompson from Sydney Yachtsannounced that another Sydney 47CR is scheduled tobe launched in July 2005 for a Sydney based owner intime for this years Hamilton Island Regatta.

Another feature adopted for the first time into this newboat from the success of the new Sydney 36 Sportswill be a retracting asymmetric pole to add to the boatsalready impressive performance and give an excitingoption for downwind sailing and short handedspinnaker sailing. This unit will be closely followedwith a third Sydney 47CR set for delivery in Septemberin time for the forthcoming 2005 Rolex Trophey Seriesand the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Designers Murray, Burns and Dovell see this asadding a new dimension in performance terms afterthe knowledge gained from the equally impressiveAtomic. Both the Sydney 36 Sportz model and theAtomic as mentioned were custom projects built bySydney Yachts with Yanmar diesel power. Atomic, regarded as probably the fastest 50-footer afloatcaused a lot of heartache on Sydney Harbour over thelast eighteen months. Atomic is a Murray Burns Dovelldesigned canting ballast racer that has demonstratedthe benefits of the latest technology for inshore racing.Racing regularly in the twilight series and specialevents like the Cannon Big boat series the boat builtby Sydney Yachts has beaten such boats asBrindabella, AAPT and the Volvo 60’s at up to 30' lessin size As used in the featured Sydney 47CR “Gomez”,Atomic likewise was supplied with the proven Yanmar4JH3CE 56 hp sail drive package.

We look forward to sharing with our readers some ofthe other custom projects underway from this worldclass sailboat manufacturer in future editions.

In late July last year another little piece wasadded to a long history of boatbuilding inFranklin, Tasmania, with the launch of theyacht “Zuline”. She is the finished productof nearly 18 months of solid work bystudents of the Diploma of WoodenBoatbuilding, at The Wooden Boat CentreTasmania.

Zuline is a Lyle Hess designed 32-footcutter, constructed in solid timber withTasmanian Blue Gum for the keel andframe, Celery Top pine for the carvel-planked hull and the cabin, imported Teakdeck and trim, and oregon mast and spars. She is powered by a new 27 hp 3GM30(see right) Yanmar diesel supplied byPower Equipment.

The boat has been built to the besttraditional wooden boatbuilding standards, and is the fifth vessel of this size created bystudents of the Wooden Boat Centre’sschool. Her owners, Mike Hannibal andCelia Gahan of Victoria, attended thelaunching together with numerous friendsat the Wooden Boat Centre.

The day arrived, cold but sunny, and thelaunch went smoothly. With theirunderstandable excitement under control, students and teachers patiently assisted asthe 10-tonne vessel was craned from theboatshed and eventually into the water nearhigh tide time, to the applause of a smallcrowd of onlookers.

Mike and Celia were thrilled to see theirnew pride and joy hit the water, and tookgreat pleasure in naming her after Mike’sgrandmother.

Since her launch in July 2004 Mike andCelia have done extensive cruising with thelatest crossing of Bass Strait undertaken toenable participation in the 2005 AustralianWooden Boat Festival at Hobart where“Zuline” attracted many admirers.

The ten students who created her camefrom almost every Australian state and from

Canada. They had been studying at theWooden Boat Centre since February 2003,and completed their course at the end ofJuly 2004, after the launch.

The Principal boatbuilder/tutor at the Centre,Terry Lean, was as thrilled as the studentsto see the finished boat launched.

“She has been a challenging and verydetailed project,” Terry said. “The studentshave done a great job, and are to becongratulated.”

Terry also explained: “The Wooden BoatCentre Tasmania provides the onlycompetency-based, accredited Diplomacourse in wooden boatbuilding in thesouthern hemisphere. It is probably theonly such course in the world wherestudents build a seagoing cruising vessellike this, from drawings to launching andsea-trials, as their major project.”

The next vessel currently under constructionat the Wooden Boat Centre has beenspecified and supplied with a newgeneration 4JH4 engine complete with ZFHydraulic transmission.

We look forward to previewing this vessel inan upcoming edition of Power News.

Alternative Power Systems is an Australian owned company thatspecialises in designing, manufacturing, testing and installation ofgenerators to suit a wide range of applications. Their productsinclude open frame and silenced sets, for both prime power andstandby applications. Their sets can be found in hospitals andsupermarkets, as well as portable applications, all over Australia.

Recently, Alternative Power Systems was asked to build a specialisedgenerator to suit an agricultural application where acid rain hadpreviously caused reduced alternator life. Because the operator is inclose contact with the machinery, low noise was also part of thecustomer’s specification. As Alternative Power Systems manufacturetheir generator cabinets in house they were able to meet thecustomer’s requirements with a set that not only exceeds noise andaccess needs, but is also very pleasing to the eye.

When the Customer approached Alternative Power Systems to buildthis generator, they had already researched the Yanmar TNE enginerange, and knew of it’s quiet operation and low fuel consumption. The Yanmar 4TNE84EMR four cylinder, two litre displacement, watercooled diesel engine develops 16.4 kW @ 1500 rpm. This enginewas chosen to drive a Mecc Alte Alternator to give 15 kVa. Noise levelof the set has been measured at 69 dBa @ 1 meter at 100% load.

For further information on this generator, please contact Mr RobHolland of Alternative Power Systems (Aust) Pty Ltd. on 03 9587 5758.

Catamaran designs have progressed a long way in recent yearsand the new Ocean Cat 34 is certainly a bold step forward inpower catamaran design and construction. The vessel wasdeveloped by the renowned New Zealand designer Roger Hill, andbuilt by Peter Moran and his team at Ocean Cat Marine who havedelivered excellence in quality, style and finish.

Peter, who for many years was heavily involved in the StainlessTank manufacturing industry in Brisbane, is a very keen boatie thatloves nothing more than getting out onto the waters of Moreton Bay.Peter decided to venture into the manufacture of the Ocean Cat 34due to the exceptional stability and efficiency of the catamaransdesign.

After working for years with both stainless steel and Aluminummaterials and having great respect for the strength and durabilityof these materials Peter decided to manufacture his vessels usingthe same 5083 marine grade aluminum used on most modernsuper yachts, thus ensuring enormous strength, long life andresistance to impact. The external finish is so well faired that theOcean Cat 34 has the appearance of being molded. The paintsystem used throughout is “International Marine” specificationdelivering toughness and durability.

Peter pointed out that he had chosen to install Yanmar Marinediesel engines as the standard engine option due to theexceptional reputation for quality, reliability and fuel economy aswell as the very good product support offered both here inAustralia and overseas.

With Roger Hill’s outstanding design, it’s planing hull deliversexcellent performance with a top speed of 27 knots and acomfortable cruising speed of 20 knots. The OceanCat 34 has alength of 10.4 metres, beam 4.2 metres and a weight of 8500kgand underway or at anchor it’s stability is unparalleled for a boatof this size.

The reliability of the twin 240hp Yanmar 4LHA-STZP intercooled,turbo-charged diesel engines coupled to the proven and robustMercruiser Bravo 2X series Stern-drive legs with single 3 bladealuminum propellers, delivers effortless power as well as theability to trim the boat to suit all sea conditions and reduce draft ifnecessary. The engines were supplied with 12 Volt, 2 pole (aboveground) electric’s. Fuel consumption of 25 litres per engine perhour at 20 knots provides a cruising economy that similar sizedmonohulls can only dream about.

Champagne & Caviar....For nearly eight decades, Halvorsen boats have been cruisingthe waters of the world. Built for many years solely in Sydney, construction has subsequently moved overseas since the late1970’s to Hong Kong and China, where many current Halvorsensare still being produced. However the Halvorsen 38’ GourmetCruiser is being constructed on the NSW south coast at SydneyYachts, and it somehow seems very appropriate that such acurrent production of Halvorsen is “Aussie Built”.

The 38’ Gourmet Cruiser is moulded with enough teak trim tomake her look like a real boat. Material used is the finestavailable, along with teak interiors and teal and holly soles.Unique classy and beautiful, coupled with a pedigree second tonone.

This Gourmet Cruiser boasts the latest fibreglass construction, with all the latest inclusions of bow thrusters, electronics andonboard facilities, it has the lines and characteristics of the pastto invoke a timeless appeal.

The approach taken by Halvorsen for the saloon and cockpit isone of a relaxed, open-plan livingwith a wide door between thetwo areas to separate themwhen needed. Carpets thatsimulate teak planking softensthe underfoot feel of the cockpit, and the deep pile carpet in thesaloon is still softer.

The large classic eight wooden-spoked wheel at the helm givesit a traditional feel, althoughcontemporary influences comethrough in the electronic naviga-tion aids and the bowthruster.

Also handy for the skipper is anintegrated panel of gauges forthe engine, trim tab andbowthruster controls, a com-pass neatly-positioned ahead of

YANMARfits the BILL

About 2½ years ago Mark Quealy, and his team at Seca, aSydney based company involved in sewer technology, recognised the need for a larger, purpose built, high pressuredrain cleaning unit than they were already building andselling to municipal councils and contractors.

The machine had to be trailer mounted, highly maneuverableand compact enough to allow access to all areas of opera-tion and lastly, powerful enough to drive the pump and thehydraulics required.

The Yanmar 4TNE88 Series engine (48hp@3000rpm) wastrialed and then selected as the diesel engine to suite theirrequirements.

The Yanmar filled the bill for many reasons but its compactsize and power, reliability and convenient “same side”servicing of all parts that required regular checking andreplacement was a significant advantage, especially whenthe engine was to be installed where space and access wereto be a premium.

The sewer blaster also had to have noise levels at a mini-mum so the unit could be used by council maintenancecrews at night and the Yanmar TNE engines proved to besuperior in noise reduction, especially mechanical noise.

With the engine and pump assembly covered by a soundattenuated fibre canopy noise and vandalism are kept to aminimum.

Fuel economy was also a major factor with the blaster andthe Yanmar proved a very “light drinker” returning figures ofaround 3.9 litres per hour at 2900rpm.

The Project Cannon High Pressure Drain Cleaner, as it iscalled, features many unique options such as a swivel hosereel and reel mounted controls, noncorrosive 600 litrefibreglass tank, anti-siphon protection, as well as low levelpump protection.

Eighteen Project Cannons have now been placed withmunicipal councils throughout Qld, NSW and Victoria withtheir versatility being proven in other areas such as firefighting, high pressure surface cleaning and roof foaming ofsewers.

NEW TWO-CYLINDER DIESEL

The third in Yanmar’s new YM series of naturally aspirateddiesel engines is the two-cylinder 2YM15. At 3600 rpm itdevelops 14hp (10.3kW) at the crankshaft. Displacement is0.57 litres.

Yanmar’s 2YM15 has a completely redesigned cylinder blockand combustion system as introduced recently on the new21HP (15.3kW), 29HP (21.3kW), 39HP (28.7kW) and 54HP(39.6kW) models. It is a vertical four-stroke, fresh watercooled design with heat exchanger. With indirect injection anda swirl pre-combustion chamber, this all-new engine complieswith EPA Tier 2, BSO Tier 2 and SAV and will meet the future2006/44/EC emission requirements to be introduced in 2005.

Performance features include high torque at low enginespeeds, with a maximum torque of 34 N-m, increased powerand further reductions in noise levels.

A compact control panel which can be mounted horizontally orvertically, injection pump, electric stop solenoid and 60-ampalternator are introduced as standard. To meet heavierelectrical demands, an optional 80-amp alternator is offered.

For straightforward maintenance, the water pump, fuel filter, oil change and dip stick are located on the same side of theengine, at the front.

It is available as a standard inboard with KM2P-1 gearbox, orfitted with Yanmar’s patented dual seal SD20 saildrive unit. The inboard has a mechanical cone clutch with choice of2.21:1, 2.62:1 and 3.22:1 forward ratios, plus 3.06:1 inreverse. The saildrive version, designated 2YM15C, has aconstant mesh gear with dog clutch, geared at 2.64:1 forwardand reverse.

Michael Blair, Power Equipment’s Marine Sales Manager, remarked that “this new model slots very nicely into theexisting Yanmar power range and is one model that has beeneagerly anticipated by both our local boat builders and dealerfraternity since it’s announcement.”

the helm, VHF radio just ahead of the single lever throttle-shiftcontrol and a Coursemaster 850 Autopilot. The helm seat isnearly wide enough for two people, and when not in use can behinged forward to extend the working bench space for the galley.

With classic Halvorsen lines reminiscent of ‘Halvo’s’ of yesteryear, the new 38’ while available with twin engines and a flybridge, isoffered as standard with a single Yanmar diesel and three layoutoptions.

The single 440hp Yanmar diesel is an excellent option, especiallywith the bow thruster to prove close quarters manoeuvrability. Italso gives the same 25 knot performance as a pair of 240hpYanmars.

The 11.58 metre 38 Gourmet Cruiser carries a beam of 3.66metres and a displacement of around 7800kgs. The Yanmarhustles the big cruiser on plane and speeds it to a 25 knot top endat 3300rpm or to a pleasant 20 knot cruise at 2800rpm. Soundlevels are quite low with the Yanmar positioned below the saloonand accessible by lifting hatches on gas struts (after the table has

been removed to raise the porthatch).

The hull allows for pleasant idlingwhen not in a hurry, while the quickcruise and top speeds will rapidlybring the next port of call into viewwhen time is precious or adverseweather threatens. The design isentirely capable of handlingoffshore conditions for coastalcruisers.

The 38’ Gourmet Cruiser wasdesigned to be much more than aday boat, and is eminentlysuitable for long cruising andspending glorious days andnights afloat. It is for this reasonthat she is called a “GourmetCruiser”...champagne and caviarrather than beer and sandwiches.

This engine has a maximum rated torque of 610Nm at 2500rpm.The high torque offered by the Yanmar 3,455 litre engine, combined with the large diameter 20” prop of the Bravo 2 drive, provide plenty of thrust (forward and reverse), which is muchappreciated especially when in tight spaces such as marina’s orwhen trying to move vessels away from the bank. The maximumRPM of the engine is 3300rpm, which results in lower pistonspeeds, therefore less wear compared to some of the marketcompetitors.

Paul has now clocked up some 650 hours of operation since theYanmar 4LHA-STZP was installed and has already seen areduction of at least 50% to his fuel costs. Paul is particularlyimpressed with the much improved manoeuvreability and reducednoise levels, factors which have been a significant added bonusfor both Paul and his crew. Paul admits the repower did notachieve any significant top speed gains for his vessel which wasas expected, however the overall cruise speeds between his worklocations is done now with a diesel engine that is somewhatlofting along compared to the outboards which he admitted werebeing pushed pretty hard all the time day in day out.

All in all another verysatisfied Yanmarowner and operatorwho agree’s that he isa testament to theYanmar advertisingslogan of...

“Yanmar hasdelivered for me”

As the price of fuel ever increases, the running cost of even themost modern Direct Fuel Injection and 4-stroke outboards do notcompare to the modern and ever improving high speed dieselsnow available on the market. When Tasmanian Mussel farmer,Paul Reece, looked at how he could reduce the running costs ofhis business to stay competitive in the the market place, the firstitem that he wanted to address was the propulsion system on hismussel barge.

Since putting his 36.5' vessel into service 4 years ago, Paul hasexperienced numerous reliability issues with a number of theoutboards that he has used to power the vessel. From thisexperience, Paul knew that to resolve these issues once and forall, he would have to look at a diesel sterndrive package. Aftermore than 6 months of extensive research into the variousoptions available, Paul decided upon the Yanmar 4LHA-STZP230 horsepower package (pictured right).

The 230hp model is a 3.45 litre purpose built marine engine andforms part of the 4LHA series, which also covers a power rangeincluding a 150hp and 190hp model. The 4LHA is offered in bothstandard stern drive and shaft drive configurations and isrenowned and respected in the marine industry as being thebenchmark for this horsepower range.

With several hundred units already proven here in Australia alone,in both commercial and pleasure craft applications (and manythousand of units internationally) this model is one that isfavoured for it’s simple and uncluttered design, one that is muchappreciated especially by the service and maintenance personnelamong the various charter fleets. Standard features such asremovable cylinder liners, replaceable valve guides and easy toservice heat exchangers combined with high hour serviceintervals set this engine apart from it’s competition and allows forlow cost of ownership during it’s full life cycle. Its conventionalpush rod type valve design also is favoured by the variouscommercial operators rather than the alternative and highmaintainance cam belt drive type.

Bermagui, on the far South East Coast of NewSouth Wales, is the home of the Bermagui BlueWater Classic Gamefish Tournament and is heldin January over the Australia Day weekend. This year the tournament was sponsored byPower Equipment under the “Yanmar Banner”which made it the Yanmar Blue Water Classic.

The tournament turned out to be a showcase ofYanmar powered vessels, everything from therecently re-powered Julie-Ann, a 23ftCarribean (Bertram), to the magnificent 40ftHead Hunter (see Power News 24) which wasre-powered with a pair of 6CX-ETE’s about 7months ago. In between there was a brandnew Blackwatch 34, a brand new Blackwatch36 and a couple of re-powered Bertram 28’s -all of which were YANMAR powered. Therewas a BBQ on the Friday afternoon before thetournament began where all the Yanmarowners were invited to tie up their boats andenjoy a beer and a sausage, it was a greatopportunity to discuss those things fishermendiscuss when not fishing.

Anglers came from far and wide, there wasBetty & Ed Martin who came all the way fromthe USA again, Betty & Ed are regulars at thistournament, Ross Hawkins from Vanuatu, and a50ft Westcoaster with owner Denis Fieldwickand crew who brought the boat all the way

from Tasmania. They weren’t looking good tomake the start of the tournament, being held upby bad weather and having to spend threedays on Flinders Island. There were also manyanglers from further inland Australia towingtheir boats from as far as Wagga Wagga.

As naming rights sponsor, Yanmar couldn’t beleft out so we commandeered the boat our ownSteve Parsons regularly fishes on, Extreme, and renamed it YANMAR, all on board tried hardto catch a marlin, even hooked onto one on dayone but it got away, legend has it that it wouldhave won the tournament for them, but we’llnever know will we!

In a nutshell, 227 anglers fished on 67 boatsover 4 days, collectively 227 fish were taggedand released and only 2 fish were captured. Ina review of the rules this year the club adoptedthree major changes, firstly that everyparticipant aboard a boat had to be a registeredangler, this eliminated the practice of twoanglers registering and actually catching all thefish whilst up to 4 other experienced anglersgave help and support. Secondly, the emphasiswas on tag & release, thus the prize categorieswere turned around and the heaviest fish intheir species did not claim the importance andemphasis of the past, and finally they

introduced team fishing, to promotecamaraderie and further interest.

Although marlin was in short supply yellowfintuna weren’t, the little yellowfin were on the goand many of the boats enjoyed the constantwinding and tagging.

On day two, Louise Grose fishing on “TheUltimate” hooked into a decent Blue, and after alot of time and agony, during which the fishwent straight down and probably died, shefinally gave up the fight and with the help ofanother angler brought the fish to the surface;because of this help the fish was disqualified. The Final result was that the fish weighed 239Kg. Louise has now won the Hard Luck storyaward for the second year in a row.

The tournament was rounded off with thePresentation Dinner at the Bermagui CountryClub, where all the prizes and trophies werepresented. The local Eden boat “Mighty Dragon”cleaned up many of the prizes including highestpoint boat, junior, lady angler and team……theywon’t be buying new reels or line for sometime.

Keep an eye out for entry forms to the 2006YANMAR Blue Water Classic and we lookforward to seeing you there.

Honeymoon 33 Cruiser

My Honeymoon Cruiser was only launchedin 1992, but was powered with a lightcommercial truck diesel that was marineconverted. This conversion wasprofessionally installed but the boat couldonly cruise at 6 knots and vibration levelswere high on idle. The boat lackedperformance and very litt le room wasavailable in the engine compartment, whichmade servicing difficult. A new engine wasin view.

I did my homework, and after looking at alarge range of engines, Yanmar was theobvious choice. I chose the 100hp 4JH3–HTE (see above) because it boastedmaximum horsepower using minimumspace and thrifty fuel economy. Afterinstallation the results were amazing! Thereis now room in the engine compartment forease of service, the revs are super smooththroughout the whole range, the vibration hasdisappeared, and not to mention the quietidle – you’d be forgiven for thinking you’resailing. With the vessel being a semidisplacement hull design, the Yanmar hasgiven the Honeymoon 33 a cruising speedof 8 to 8.5 knots at 2800–3000 rpm(depending on sea conditions), using nomore than 7 litres per hour with plenty ofpower in reserve. Top speed is now 10 knots.

What Our Customers Say!

The Yanmar was purchased through WayneNewman Marine and installed by McGillMarine at RMYC Broken Bay. I must say, allthe calculations and advice that WayneNewman gave were spot on, and theinstallation performed by McGill Marine wasoutstanding. After installation, the boatperformed according to prior calculatedpredictions. It is satisfying knowing that whatI expected is what I received.

Re-powering a vessel is a high cost task toundertake, but with Yanmar on your side youknow what to expect and this makes theprocess less painful. I now have a pleasurecruiser that performs well, is exciting toskipper and economical to run. Yanmarprovides an inspection and test run afterinstallation prior to the warranty being signedoff. What more could you ask for?

The unit is fully self-contained consisting of multi-directionalfairlead bullwheel winch and storage reel. The maximumlinespeed is 10m/min.

The Yanmar 3TNE88-EPP Watercooled Diesel Engine (develop-ing 27kW @ 3000rpm) drives two hydraulic pumps, a load-sensepiston pump and gear pump. All controls for the diesel engine aremounted at the operators cubicle. The unit is also provided withsound insulation to achieve 85dBa at the operators ear.

Redmond Gary’s Mechanical Engineer, Mike Randle, commentedthat “we were very happy with the ease of installation of theYanmar engine – we basically had to bolt it down and build anenclosure around it. Not having to relocate the muffler is also abig advantage to us. We were also impressed with the low noiselevel.”

chooses YanmarGraham Dearle (Power Equipment Perth MarineSales Manager ) has been kept busy during thelast 12 to 18 months fielding many enquiries forpropulsion solutions to suit the support vesselson several expedition, research and super yachtprojects being undertaken by the local WesternAustralian based shipyards. One of the localboat builders that Graham has partnered with tomeet the demand from these world-classshipyards is Kirby Marine of Henderson (WA).

Established in 1988, Kirby Marine is one ofWestern Australia’s largest manufacturers ofprecision-fabricated stainless steel and alloycomponents, supplying an extensive range ofcustom designed and built marine, industrial andarchitectural components for local and interna-tional markets.

The company has drawn on its fabricationexpertise to expand into the construction ofcustomised commercial and pleasure craft, ranging from crab and cray boats working inlocal waters to many high speed commercialcraft operating internationally. Kirby Marine haveused some of the Yanmar commercial engines inthese projects with the last cray vesselundertaken being supplied with the Yanmar6LAH-STE 640hp engine.

In conjunction with their own proven designsKirby Marine recently signed a manufacturingagreement with NAIAD Inflatables of NewZealand, which enables the construction of theirrenowned rigid inflatable designs in the com-pressive facilities of Kirby Marine WA.

The NAIAD designs feature soft riding deep veealuminium hulls capped with a tough inflatablecollar. The collar is comprised of multiple innerair chambers for added safety and is attached tothe hull with a unique track and slide arrange-ment for simple removal.

NAIAD rigid inflatables are well proven in manyrescue and patrol duties, but are also ideal forresearch, expedition and super yacht supportactivities where the combination of a lightweight, rigid hull and soft collar can enhance thevessel’s functionality.

Mr Rob Kirby (MD Kirby Marine) has subse-quently supplied several Naiad designed vesselswith Yanmar power, which are now operating insome of the most remote and inhospitable areasof the world. Kirby Marine support craft togetherwith extensively equipped mother ships can befound plying the waters of Antarctica, the BalticSea and Indonesia on any given day.

As Rob explained there simply was no otherchoice than Yanmar for his propulsion powerrequirements when the key factors of low weight,

easily obtainable worldwide support and proven perfor-mance were all factors that had to be considered.

The NAIAD custom rib’s range in size from 2.5 metresto15 metres with diesel inboard options available in allmodels over 6 metres.

The first unit pictured is a custom 6 metre design fittedwith the renowned YANMAR 4LHAM-STP230HP@3300RPM propulsion engine coupled to aHamilton 213 Water Jet. This unit with a fuel capacity of150litres and a beam of just 2.5 metres offers a passen-ger capacity of 10 persons and a light ship speed of over35knots is proving to be a winning combination for thetender and support roles required by the operators ofthese world class expedition and research vessels.

Kirby Marine also offers a specialized twin engineconfiguration Naiad RIB which is used in many seasearch and rescue roles. Pictured also is an alternativeKirby designed Aluminium Monohull currently undergoingfinal commissioning for the Derby (WA) Volunteer SeaRescue organization. This unit, powered by twin Yanmar6LPA-DTZP 250HP – Bravo 2X stern drive packagesagain were selected with Yanmar Power due to theirunsurpassed reputation from other commercial opera-tions in WA for their reliability and low cost of operationand maintance. With an expected top speed in excess of30knots and a total weight less than 5.5 tonne, this is onevessel that will surely have its capacity tested in theremote and wild waters off Derby on the far north WesternAustralian coastline.

Congratulations to Rob Kirby and Graham Dearle forproviding what no doubt is a leading locally built solutionto suit their clients’ specialized and exacting require-ments.

Wedding News From Qld Branch

On the 23rd of October 2004, Sonya marriedDean Ainsworth in Springwood, Brisbane.

Sonya works as Accounts/Receptionist at PowerEquipment’s Qld branch.

We wish them many years ofmarital bliss and good fortune.

On the 1st of November 2003 Power Equipment launched itsnew ‘Dealer Connect’ website.

We have been delighted with the response from our dealers.Obviously it has taken some dealers longer to come toterms with using the internet site and we appreciate thattheir business is engines – not computers, but many arenow seeing the benefits of being connected.

The dealers now have the ability to respond to customerinquiries to a much greater degree on-the-spot than theywere in the past in terms of price and availability. They cancontinue their spare parts operation on weekends (which isso common in the retail and service business’s that theyoperate) and outside their traditional working hours ifdesired.

Our public website www.yanmar.com.au was alsooverhauled at the same time with significant changes beingmade in presentation, layout, and content. There is so muchmore information now available at the public level in relationto engines, spare parts, and also details on our Marinedealer network throughout Australia. This enables Yanmarend-users to save time, time, and time. Saving timedetermining the engine most suitable for their applicationand obtaining specifications, saving time finding theirclosest marine dealer, and saving time getting the serviceand parts they require.

We have seen a substantial increase in traffic over our publicwebsite since this upgrade and know we are moving in theright direction for our dealers and end-users alike.

This year will see the introduction of a variety of programs forour dealers and end-users and both can be assured that wewill continue to improve the site and make changes fromsuggestions that come from our dealers and end-userswhen and where possible.
