What Is A Database?What Is A Database?
A collection of organized, related data
Arranged for ease and speed of search and retrieval
Examples: telephone book, cookbook, address directory, organizer, ATM
Parts of A DatabaseParts of A Database
Record Each individual item (article, picture,graphic) in
the database
Field Each category of information, i.e. title, author,
subject, summary or abstract, etc., within a record
Need to know what fields are searched
Some databases allow specific field searches: EBSCOhost, AP Photo Archive

Using the Power of Boolean Logic

Narrows search by connecting parts of search statement
Reduces number of hits
Sample search in EBSCOhost: “death penalty” and pennsylvania

Expands search
Increases number of hits
Examples: – “soviet union” or russia
– “death penalty” or “capital punishment”

Narrows search

Eliminates a specific term

Searching HintsSearching Hints
Use quotes around phrases, i.e. “white house” Don’t use STOP words, i.e. a, an, the, and, or Spelling and typing count Use unique, specific terms Use truncation (wild cards) i.e. teen* Does database automatically search plurals? Don’t use capital letters unless appropriate Punctuation - hyphen, apostrophe Special options - search near or within # of words
