Welcome to the Powderhorn Art Fair!
About the CoerBy the Lake was created by African-American art-ist Christopher E. Harrison and is the theme art for the2009 Powderhorn Art Fair.
His work consists of chalks, inks, paints and other me-dia on paper to create magical landscapes and abstractart pieces. Says Harrison, My visions are inspired bythe earth, sea and sky. My work, which I have coined theterm Proto biomorphism features paintings with amoe-
ba-like shapes with densely textured backgrounds.Proto biomorphisms are a common ancestor of a set of
related visual art styles that merge into a singular, albeit
simplied graphic language that revisits a primal even
dreamlike vision of sensual and spiritual sensations.
Mission StatementThe Powderhorn Art Fair is a regional ne arts and necrafts fair developed to promote the uniqueness of thePowderhorn Park Neighborhood to the greater Minne-apolis and Saint Paul metropolitan area. Proceeds areused to support programming at Powderhorn Park.
2009 Powderhorn Art Fair Sponsors
Welcome . . .Each summer white tents dot the landscape around Powderhorn Park bring-ing individuals from all over the country together to enjoy an abundance ofcreativity and skill that ows through the artists participating in the Powder-horn Art Fair. The park, the lake, the surrounding community, and event coor-
dinators and volunteers make this a fantastic event; however, the real beautyof the Powderhorn Art Fair is that the events impact is felt throughout theyear and not just on event days. Proceeds from the Art Fair help fund parkprograms such as theatre arts, computer lab, teen center, music recordingstudio, the pottery studio and team sports - giving neighborhood residents ofall ages a safe environment in which to play, learn and grow.
As you enjoy this years Fair, please take a moment to reect on your impor-tance to Powderhorn Park and our communitiy. We appreciate you takingtime to experience the uniqueness of the Powderhorn Park neighborhood andhope you will visit us regularly.
This eent is brought to you by . . .A partnership between the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood (PPNA) and the Min-
neapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB). Their staffs are supported by a wide
variety of community volunteers, event organizers, and staff.

It is with great sadness that this years Powderhorn
Art Fair will not have the bright presence and
consciousness raising art of Patrick Turner.
Patrick exhibited his work and won awards for many
years at the Powderhorn Art Fair. He will be greatly
missed, along with his creativity, wry jokes and open
personality.
The art of collage can be approached with the
same challenges as in relationships. There are
many parallels that are very similar in determining,
for all intended purposes, what the nal outcomeshould be. There will always be the question of
where do you draw the line and should that line be
crossed. This is similar to the stage of collage or the
actual process, where you cut out, tear, burn or use
any of the unique imaginative collage techniques
that can be combined together. In collage, I can
contain the lyrical expressions that for the most part
magnify what is to be or not to be. Patrick Turner,

Tim Byrns is a wood sculptor living in Duluth,MN. His preferred medium is local hardwoodfrom the Great Lakes Region. Often, thethemes of Tims work are communicatedthrough both the character of the rawmaterial, and the suggested movement ofthe sculpted form. In each piece, he strivesto preserve the spirit of the wood, whileconveying a renewed sense of movementand life.

From the beginning, my passion for photography has been moreof a process of inner exploration. The images can be metaphoricalstepping stones to rich, personal associations, vehicles to carrythe viewer into the realm of the surreal. The art of photography isin the seeing; the craft is rendering what has been seen into thefullness of its spirit. A photograph to me can be not only a literalwindow to the world but also a mirror to an inner landscape. Here, the viewers must bring something of themselves to fully activatethe poetic image.
Spirit of PowerhornyvoNNe & RoBeRT myRvAllWood MI Booth 184
My name is Robert Myrvall and I have been a self taught wood-worker since 1975. I have always enjoyed working with wood andspending time in the woods of Michigans Upper Peninsula. I al-ways try to bring forward the natural beauty of the wood. I really doenjoy the entire process of wood working and look forward to eachnew year and the challenge of doing art fairs
Each year four top awards and ten invitational awards are given to Main Exhibi-tors as well as Community Showcase and Group Exhibitor awards. All artists areeligible for The Spirit of Powderhorn award.
A panel of three judges of varying art backgrounds (one of whom is a Powder-horn Park Neighborhood resident) is chosen by the Art Fair Committee to selectthe Main Exhibitor award winners.
One judge is chosen by the Community Showcase Committee to select the Spiritof Powderhorn award winner (the artist whose work best represents the uniquequalities found in the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood), and Best of for theCommunity Showcase and Group Exhibitors.

HELP NOW!
We all expect blood to be there for us, but barely a fraction of those who can give do.
Yet sooner or later, virtually all of us will face a time of great vulnerability in which we
will need blood. And that time is all too often unexpected.
From its beginning, the American Red Cross has formed a community of service,
of generous, strong and decent people bound by beliefs beyond themselves. The
honor, spirit and resources of the American people comes forth with neighbors help-
ing neighbors in need - during earthquakes, oods, res, storms - and also for the
deeply personal and often quiet disasters that require a gift of blood.

A Thank You from the Powerhorn Park director:
Its that time of year again when the greatest trio of art fairs is in the city of Minne-
apolis. Participants can get free bus rides to all three fairs but I have to say its great
to see all the new faces right here at Powderhorn Park.
Im using this article as an opportunity to personally thank everyone for taking part in
the 2009 Powderhorn Art Fair. You are the people that help insure this park remains
a special place all year long, not just the two days in August when artists from thecommunity and around the country encircle the lake to exhibit their artwork.
This weekend will ensure that not one child in this neighborhood will be turned away
from joining a sports team or participating in a creative activity. All proceeds from
the Art Fair make a huge impact on the kids and community that live around this
magnicent park. This year alone Art Fair funding impacted programs like youth
and adult ceramics with new electric wheels, the Ideawerks Sound Studio program,
sports teams year round, and the Outdoor Monday Movies in the park happening
the entire month of August.
As we enter out last month of summer at the park the kids have enjoyed their time
off participating in theater and youth farm camps, shing, camping and golf classes.
Older youth have been canoeing, attending teen nights, going on trips to Valley
Fair, or participating in our teen job program. Lets not forget to mention recordingthe next hot hook in Powderhorn Parks very own recording studio. From the dog
walker, to the nose guard, and the desk staff to the district manager, we all extend a
giant thank you and look forward to having you back again next year.
I would like to personally thank each one of you for attending or exhibiting at the
Powderhorn Art Fair this year.
Sincerely,
Powderhorn Park Center Director
