Most of India’s mega cities like Mumbai and Delhi have modern buildings, shopping malls and luxurious hotels, like many European cities. A large number of people live wealthy lifestyles. HOWEVER alongside this wealth, there are many millions living in poverty and in SLUM conditions. Many of India’s cities are simply not coping with the rise in population. The number of people living in slums has doubled in the last 20 years, meaning approx. 20% of people living in Urban areas live in slums. Health is affected with around half of India’s cities having no piped water or sanitation. POVERTY PROFILES: BRAZIL Brazil is a country of great inequality and there is a vast gap between rich and poor. Around 26% of the people were living in poverty in 2012. Including 16.2 million in extreme poverty and 4.8 million with no income at all. Brazil also suffers from a shortage of housing, with an estimated 8 million houses being needed, 50 million people are also considered to live in poor housing. Over 24 million people in city areas do not have access to drinking water, and 83 million do not have an adequate sewage system. Poor areas in the city are known as slums or FAVELAS.
