Research/Technical Approach

• VENSIM simulation software is used to develop a high-level model that encapsulates all processes in poultry production that require water use;

• Model uses production rate, weight of processed chickens, and water used to process one chicken as inputs;

• Model is populated based on existing research and best practices

Water Usage Model

• Models all processes that require water use starting from stunning;• Models production of pathogensand pollutants based on production level andbird size;• Customizable

Wastewater Treatment Model

• Uses Water Model as input;• Includes all wastewater treatment components;• Step by step treatment modeling for each pollutant;• Customizable

Energy Use Model

• Models energy consumption associated with pumping, filtering heating, cooling and cleaning of the water;• Based on thorough equipment inventory;• Customizable;• Provides energy cost estimates

Labor Requirements Model

• Describes labor requirements and allocation at the poultry production facility;• Workforce modeled for processes specific to poultry industry;• Models relationship between increased automation and labor requirements

Conclusion and Future Work

• Preliminary results have demonstrated good predictive capabilities of the Poultry System Simulation Model

• PRYSSM is a fully integrated system of systems model that can be used as a Decision Making Tool

• Interested in collaboration with industry partners to: - Perform case studies;

- Evaluate/model new technologies;

- Collect more data
