Christmas Show & Sale and countless Farmers Markets
One of many items on my to do list was to create an identity for my
pottery studio. I live in the Salacoa Valley and that seemed good enough
for the name of my studio.
1st FaceBook IDAfter I posted this image on FB, several people
commented that they would like to put in an order
for a hookah.
My FB Page became a critical marketing tool. I
found that it was a very effective tool for building
momentum prior to a show. I would post new
photos of work in progress or fresh out of the kiln
and the enthusiastic response on FB was often an
omen of great sales. You can’t beat social media!
My 2nd FB IDThis picture replaced my first
FaceBook ID. Something about the
positive / negative space in the
photo attracted me. This was also
the first time I played with my logo
to adapt it to different situations.
Of course, I am stacking my pottery
again as I photograph the pieces.
Emoticon Mugs!
I was looking at the patterns in one
of my children’s garments and I saw
a combination of hearts, peace signs,
and skull & cross bones. That inspired
me to create mugs with iconic images
that are part of our popular culture.
This was a huge seller for me. I could count on great sales
at any show when I had a good stock of these mugs. They were hard to keep in
stock and that was a good problem to have.
This pic sold some cannisters!
The AJC did a story about me in the
Sunday Living & Arts section. It was just
after I had won Best In Show in the Clay
Category at Virginia Highland Summerfest
in 2011. I was on the front cover of that
section and this shot was on an inside
page. They did me right when they wrote
that story. I had people coming up to me
for more than a year hoping to buy my
work and specifically the cannisters with
the glaze shown in the photo. There is
nothing like some good press to help your
business along!
Help! There’s a Fire!
I have a friend who is a
fireman and I made this
mug with him and his fellow
fireman in mind. I used a
commercially prepared red
glaze for the interior and it
gave the perfect effect.
First Batch of Emoticon Mugs
In my first attempts at this
mug I applied an additional
color for extra POP. They
looked great but were too
time consuming to make so
only a few were made.
Hey Honey!
We raise honey bees and what
you see is a batch of wildflower
honey. I impressed the shape of
a hexagon pattern on these
lidded honey cannisters and they
really sold well.
The NICE Studio
My first studio was in our
basement and it really
was sad. My wife finally
convinced me to move to
this space which had
tons of windows a view
out on our pasture. Much
nicer!
LeatherhardI liked the way the handles
looked all in a row so I
snapped this pic. These
mugs were drying to reach
the leather hard stage so
that I could then give them
their first firing.
Let the Reformation Begin!I made these mugs for my friends
at Reformation Brewery. They
were raising money with some
crowd funding and these were
part of an upper tier giveaway if
you donated a certain amount of
money. They raised their money
and are building a successful
brewery in Woodstock, GA. Is
their beer good? Yes, it is
delicious!
