The American Creoso t e Co. is an abandoned wood creosote f a c i l i t yoccupying a p p r o x i m a t e l y 34 acres in W i n n e f i e l d , Louisiana. TheLouisiana Department of Environmental Qual i ty Hazardou s W a s t eManagement Division ( L D E Q - H W M D ) inspec t ed the f a c i l i t y severaltimes f r o m 1982 to 1986. The inspections revealed s p i l l a g e ofcreosote, abandoned p i t s and containers and obvious o f f - s i t e mi-gration of contaminants.TAT i n s p e c t e d the s i te in March, 1987. T h e i r in sp e c t i on revealed:The laboratory on the western edge of the s i t e ( b y the access road)has been vandalized and chemicals s p i l l e d 1 t h r o u g h o u t the s tructure.lany of the s torage tanks on the s i te were in various degrees of decaymd leaking. There were no containment dikes around any of the stor-ige tanks.
