Before You Begin
1. Printandcutoutasetofcointemplatesforeachstudentorpairofstudents.(Youcanalsouserealcoinsorasetofpretendcoins.)
2.Printthe“PotofCoins”activitymat.Youwillneedonematforeverystudentinyourclass.
3.Printthespinnertemplate.Youwillneedonespinnerforeverythreeorfourstudents.
Introduction
Giveasetofcoinstoeachstudentsostudentscanmanipulatethemthroughoutthelesson.Orhavestudentsworkinpairstoenhanceunderstanding.
ReadaloudThe Coin Counting Book.Asyouread,pauseperiodicallyandchallengestudentstodemonstratethemoneyconceptsinthebookusingtheircoins.
Procedure1. Reviewthenameandvalueofeachcoinwithstudents.
2.Drawalargepotontheclassboardoronchartpaper.Tellstudentsyouaregoingtoputafewcoinsinthepot,andyouwouldlikethemtohelpyoucountthevalueofthecoins.
3.Drawcirclesinsidethepotandlabelthemwitha“p”forpenny,“n”fornickel,“d”fordimeandsoon.(Orusemagneticcoinsonamagneticwrite&wipeboard.)
4.Invitestudentstousetheirowncoinmanipulativestohelpthemcountthetotalvalueofthecoinsinthepot.
5.Repeattheactivitywithdifferentcoincombinations.Discussstrategiesforaddingcoinvalues(e.g.,countbyfives,startwiththehighest-valuecoins,groupequivalentcoins,andsoon).YoumaywanttorefertoThe Coin Counting Bookforexamples.

7.Next,encouragestudentstofindcoinequivalentsforcertainvalues.Forexample,holdupadimeandask,“WhatothercoincombinationscanIusetoshow10cents?”Reinforceequivalenciesbypromptingstudentstoshowavarietyofcoincombinationsthatequal20cents,25cents,50centsandsoon.Chartstudents’responses.
Guided Practice
1. Dividestudentsintogroupsofthreeorfour.Giveeachstudenta“PotofCoins”activitymat.
2.Giveeachgroupapaperbagandonesetofcoins.Havestudentsputthecoinsinthebag.
3.Giveeachgroupaspinnertemplate,apencilandapaperclip.Showstudentshowtousethepaperclipasthearrowforthespinner:Slidethepaperclipontothepencilandholdthepenciluprightinthecenterofthespinner.Flickthepapercliptospinitaroundthepencil.
4.Haveplayerstaketurnsspinningtoselectanumber.Eachstudentdrawsthatmanycoinsfromthebagandplacesthemonamat.Havestudentsaddupthevalueoftheircoins.Theplayerwiththehighestvaluewinstheround!(Pointoutthatthepersonwiththemostcoinsisn’tnecessarilythepersonwiththehighestvalue.)
5.Challengestudentstoplayseveralroundsto practicecountingvariouscoincombinations.
