You don’t have to
be a gymnast to
stay in good shape!
The Human Body
Is capable of performing
many different movements and
functions, and of recovering from
the stresses and strains of everyday life.
The human body and posture
• Constantly subjected to pressure
exerted on it by the earths
gravitational pull.
• Built-in ‘plum-line’ and ‘spirit level’.
• Any deviation from ‘neutral’
increases the stresses and strain on
the muscles, ligaments and joints.
The human body and posture
• Bending forward increases the loading
on the inter-vertebral discs and causes
tension in the supporting ligaments.
• Physical injury, psychological stress
and the ageing process can all affect
our posture and may result in pain and
impaired function.
So, what is Good Posture?
Time to observe Posture
We need to take time to observe the way people
work, sit and stand to find out what’s really going on!
Inappropriate Posture!
But very common practice!
Poor design, layout or location of equipment
may be
the cause
of poor
posture
but providing a chair may not be the solution.
Awkward working positions.
Some jobs are always going to be awkward.
Consider reducing the duration of work,
rotating workers or modifying tools.
Assess, Inform and Monitor!
POOR POSTURE = PAIN = TIME OFF WORK
No bad habits please!!
THIS IS A VERY COMMON PRACTICE THAT SHOULD BE STOPPED!
Before – After!
Maintain a neutral spinal alignment staying close to the job.
Before – After!
Same desk, same chair, same equipment!
Enlightened user!
Start NOW!
Make sure you don’t end up like this !
Some simple exercises
Remember, don’t sit too long.....
.... or you’ll end up the same shape as your favourite chair!
So .... keep them bones a movin’!!!
