It speaks volumes for the policeaction and political chicanery. MohdAbdul Najeeb Ahmed, 45, alleged to

be linked to the ISI, remained a ‘fugi-tive’ on police record who jumped bailfor 20 years before he was picked upfrom his home in Bandlaguda,Chandrayangutta area yesterday on acharge of murdering deputy superin-tendent of police Krishna Prasad 20years ago.

The question was why now and whynot earlier? The Chandrayanguttapolice however, choose to evade thequestion but keep saying he was “not inHyderabad!”

“People all around knew well he wasvery much here and did a lot of busi-ness,” a resident and neighbour toldPostnoon today. His brother, MohdMujeeb Ahmed, south chief of HizbulMujahideen is lodged in Ajmer jail forhis complicity with the ISI of Pakistan.

Najeeb is said to have possessed a

list of names of people who wereinvolved in anti-social and anti-nation-al activities. Allegations are that thepolice seized the opportunity tosqueeze him and make a quick buck. But once again the question where thatlist is, remains unanswered.

Hyderabad is famous forhaving plenty of smalltraders who run a keen

business in the City. But in thename of development, the gov-ernment has under taken a mas-sive project to give Hyderabad itsown metro rail. As a result manytraders are losing their shops inthe government’s bid to widenroads for the metro rail.

“My son committed suicidebecause of the metro project.Either demolish the market soonor allow us to carry on like before.Since more than a year, they haveonly been talking about demol-ishing the market. Just by hearingthe news my son got frustratedand committed suicide,” saysMohin Khan, a 70-year-old shoevendor in Sultan Bazaar.

Like him, there are more than1000 families who will be left withliterally nothing after the metrodemolishes their shops. SultanBazaar is one of the oldest mar-kets in Andhra Pradesh with a lotheritage structures. It is home toshops which sell goods rangingfrom expensive textiles to silver-ware to trinkets at small road-sidestalls.

This 400-year-old market fallson the second corridor route ofthe metro rail line and will require100-feet road-widening. Due tothis, shops in Chilkalguda, PutliBowli, Koti, Sultan Bazaar andBadi Chawdi will be demolished, effecting business worth rupeeshundreds of crores.

Sultan Bazaar ParirakshanaSamithi have demanded that theState Government change align-ment of the Metro Rail Corridor-IIor go underground like theChandni Chowk route in NewDelhi and many other citiesacross the world.

Speaking to Postnoon, JACchairman Govind Rathi said,“This is just a political gimmick. The Metro Rail Departmentwants to finish the road wideningbefore the new governmentcomes up. But we won’t let thathappen. We will protest and makesure that no work will commence

for the next 2 years. Once the newparty comes into power, we willmake sure things work in ourfavour.”

Interestingly,the second cor-

ridor metro route has a parallelMMTS route. The traders arguethat when there is already a pub-lic transport in the same route, what is the reason for anothermetro rail here, causing grievanceto so many families.

“The Bangalore metro projectwhich is only 7 km long tookthem more than 7 years to make.I’m sure in Hyderabad by the timethey finish the first corridor andcome to second, it will take themmore than 25 years. What is thepoint in widening the roads in the

second corridor even before thefirst one is complete? It’s nothingbut a scam in the name of devel-

opment,” says CShashi Bushan ,a trader and joint

secretary of Sultan BazaarTraders’ Association.

Traders have used the RIL Actfor intricate details of the metroprojects but the RIT failed to giveall the data claiming that there is alimit up to where the informationcan be disclosed. “They havemarked 3 to 4 acres of land just forrailway station. Apparently L&Twants to build shopping malls inthese stations. It seems like theyhave forgotten that it’s a transportservice and not real estate busi-ness,” said Ram Mohan, an indig-

nant trader.The Hyderabad Metro Rail

managing director NVS Reddyhas a contradictory take on theissue. “We have designed theproject plan long back andunder no circumstances shall wego an underground route.” Hefurther adds that MMTS andmetro railways are complemen-tary services and both are equal-ly important.

It is not only the trading thatwill be affected but also severalreligious structures that will bedemolished in the road wideningprocess. The Jain temple ofHanuman is 150 years old and theArya Samaj Mandir and HariMasjid a century old.

These structures are recog-nized as heritage structures andcitizens have sentimental valuesattached to these places. One ofthe traders points out that SultanBazaar is a heritage asset which isa living entity and asks how canthe government think of demol-ishing half of it and build a railroute?

MOHIN KHAN,shoes vendor

“Hum jaan denge perhamari zameen nahidenge (we will give ourlife but not our land).

What are we without our business? My grandfather had worked veryhard to set up this shop. I will killthem or get killed in the process butwon’t let the government do this tous.”

MANOJ N,NeelakantamNarsimlu Fancy Sareeand Dress Materials.

“Our ancestors hadcome here and estab-

lished a shop here 90 years back. It has taken decades for us to enjoythe fruits of their labour. We can setup the business elsewhere but willlose all the good will we accumulat-ed. What are we without our goodwill?”

KHALEEL AHMED,PVS Sarees.“I have taken the shopon lease and have invest-ed 40 lakhs in my busi-ness. Tomorrow if the

market gets demolished I will faceheavy losses. My owner will get thecompensation money and I will getnothing.”

MUKESH GALA,Popular Dresses“I came from Gujarat 41years back and startedmy business here but

with this road widening, I will losemy all my hard work in minutes.Government says they will give usshop space in big malls but will mymiddle class customers comethere?”

GIRIDHAR B,Manik Prabhu“My father set up thisshop in 1950. This is acomplete pedestrians

market and 80 per cent of the cus-tomers are tourists. Demolishing themarket will adversely effect the cul-ture of our city.”

The Multi-Modal TransportSystem (MMTS) that was intro-duced in the City on August 9,

2003 has become the favourite ofpassengers who prefer to use thischeap and efficient mode of trans-port. An estimated 70,000 passen-gers use the 144 MMTS trains thatlink Lingampally station andFalaknuma station everyday.

Off late, however, the same pas-sangers are complaining about theincreasing difficulties that theyencounter daily- from the unendingline to buy tickets to the often delayin schedule. Osama Salman high-lights as he travelled by theLingampally- Falaknuma route.

Long queues at ticketcounter

One of the major drawbacks ofthe MMTS trains are the long queuesthat often result in people missingtheir trains, says Anwari Begum, whouses the train to converse betweenFalaknuma station and NecklaceRoad station.

“Even though there are twocounters, only one of them is func-tioning in Falaknuma station.

This results in long queues andmany people miss the train especial-ly during peak hours. To board thenext train, we have to wait for at leasthalf an hour,” she says.

“I wish there could be a processto speed-up the issuing of tickets,”says T Ravi, a regular passenger.

Overcrowdedcompartments

Peak hours in MMTS are between8am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm. Thecompartments are overflowing with

passengers who have to risk their lifewhile commuting. A compartmentcan hold upto 50 people, but duringthese hours, there are over 250 peo-ple in each compartment includingthe First-Class section.

“It is quite risky to travel and fewof them are literally dangling in mid-air with one foot in the train- withonly the support of a rod by theentrance. Many of them fall off anddie. This is all because of the less fre-quency of the trains,” says Ravi.

“Another reason why there hasbeen an increase in deaths in MMTSis because apart from the main sta-tions, at all other stations the trainstops for a just 30 seconds.

isn't sufficient time for the peo-ple to board the train safely,” saysSheetaj Reddy, a regular user.

Nobody to check thetickets/ keep tab

Time and again, MMTS trains areboarded by even non-paying passen-

gers who take advantage of thecrowded compartments. Althoughthe price of a ticket is as low as Rs. 2,a large number travelling in the traindon't buy tickets at all.

“There are very few times that thetickets are checked.

But keeping a tab on the thou-sands of people who use this serviceeveryday is difficult.

What is worse is that passengerswho pay 15 times the price of a gen-eral ticket for first-class seats, alsoend up seated in first-class,” lamentsRaj Kumar, who uses the first-classcabin every day. “I have tried to stoppeople from boarding here but theydon't listen,” adds Raj. “Sometimesmen enter the the ladies compart-ment and despite complaining aboutit, nothing seems to be done,” com-plains Anwari.

Increased thefts“While we are seated, we put the

luggage on the stand above as thereis no space. The thieves take advan-tage and while getting off at a station, they steal the bags. In a rush, youdon’t even realize that it is missing. All this despite a six homeguards onduty on each train,” says Sheetal whohas recently reported her pursebeing stolen right under her nose.

Delay in arrival of trainsThe most common complain

that is received by MMTS is the delayin trains, says an employee. “Many ITprofessionals end up getting late dueto the trains not arriving on time, hesays. Agrees Suresh G, an IT profes-sional, “There is a constant delay. Weare helpless and eventually have towait for the train to arrive. This playsspoilsport especially when we are ina hurry.” If the MMTS does notaddress these glaring issues, it isbound to lose loyal passengers.

Save the MMTS, say commuters

Until a few years back thebook market at Koti wasa bustling bazaar. Onany given weekend the

book market would be so crowdedthat finding breathing spacewould be a challenge. Studentspursuing various courses wouldmake a beeline for this market topick up books pertaining to theirspecialities or simply some pulpfiction for half the price. But withthe government having shifted 50per cent of the shops from thefootpath to a basement of theMCH walkway beside AndhraBank, the market seems to havelost of its sheen.

“For the last four years wehave been suffering losses to thetune of 40 per cent. All this isbecause of the shifting of ourshops,” laments Srinivas B whohas been selling books for the last40 years in the market.

More than 110 vendors set uptheir stalls on the footpaths of Kotievery Sunday. And despite being asecond hand books market stu-dents flock the place in largenumbers.

What sets this market apartfrom others is that it has on offerall kinds of educational books —MBA, MCA, model papers, medicine, science and technologybooks, CAT coaching books, classX and intermediate guide booksand textbooks and foreign lan-guage books are available.

According to bookstall ownersthere is a great demand for com-petitive and group exam books oflate. “Students come asking forbooks for competitive exams likeDRO, APPSC, teachers’ training, grammar and Manorama year

book. I have stocked up all thesebooks as there is a great demandfor these books,” says MeherKhan, a bookstall owner.

In fact, so popular is the con-cept of the Sunday book marketthat despite owning shops in Koti, these book sellers prefer retailingfrom their footpath spots onweekends. “We have shops in themarket but the Sunday market isour identity. Students throng theplace and we make profits fromthe Sunday market,” says ShivaKumar who has been trading inKoti since the last five decades.

Students too can think of nobetter option to get a hold ofbooks for a cheaper price. “Ever

since I was doing engineering I’vebeen frequenting this place. I buysecond hand books and returnthem after my exams. This is agood way to save money,” saidJose Fredrick.

However, these book sellershave been facing several problemsfrom the police department in thelast few years. “They do not ask usto shut down but we need to bribethem to continue,” quipsMohammed Hussain.

He adds, “We have formed theEkta footpath association and arein talks with the government togive us space to sell books. Thismarket is a heritage market andwe won’t let go of it so easily.”

End shootings inSyria: Arab League

The Arab League secretary generalhas called for an end to shootings inSyria, warning snipers remain athreat.

Nabil al-Arabi said “all signs of militarypresence” had left the cities, with tanks andartillery removed.

Some 60 Arab League monitors arechecking compliance with a peace plan, butcorrespondents say protesters are frustrat-ed they cannot stop killings.

The UN says more than 5,000 peoplehave been killed in a crackdown on anti-government protests since March.

There has been no let-up in violence, and activists say at least 390 people havebeen killed since the observers arrived last

week. Activist group the Local Co-ordina-tion Committees said 20 people were killedon Monday, 11 of them in the flashpointcity of Homs.

Meanwhile in northern Idlib province, mutinous troops killed, wounded or cap-tured a number of government soldiers inattacks on three checkpoints, London-based opposition group the SyrianObservatory for Human Rights said.

There has also been criticism of thehead of the monitoring team, SudaneseGen Mustafa al-Dabi - who is regarded bysome as biased towards the Syrian govern-ment.

And on Sunday, the Arab Parliament, said the observers should be withdrawnbecause of the continuing violence.

At a news conference at the league'sheadquarters in Cairo, Mr Arabi said themission needed more time to complete itswork.

The League would then report on the

monitors’ activities and decide if more workwas needed, he added.

He said the military had withdrawnheavy weapons from residential areas andwas on the outskirts of cities, but the vio-lence had not ended.

“All signs of military presence have beenwithdrawn from the cities and are nowaway from residential areas," he said.

“The observer mission was able to takefood supplies into some cities, speciallyHoms. ” I have spoken with the head of mis-sion , shots are still being fired . We want allthese signs of violence to disappear.

He added that it was difficult to tell whowas firing on whom. Mr Arabi added thatthe government had released about 3,500prisoners since the mission arrived, he said.

The removal of heavy weaponry andfreeing of political prisoners are two keypoints of the Arab League plan, and this willenable the Syrian government to say it is incompliance, says the BBC's Jon Donnison.

Tens of thousands of people have beenprotesting in Budapest over Hungary’scontroversial new Constitution, a day

after it came into force. The country’s governing Fidesz party

pushed the law through parliament in Aprilafter winning a two-thirds majority in parlia-mentary elections.

Opponents say it threatens democracy byremoving checks and balances set up in 1989when Communism fell.

The EU and US had also asked for the lawto be withdrawn.

The dispute has cast doubt over talks on anew financing agreement with the EU andIMF, seen as vital for market confidence inthe central European country.

Several centre-left opposition partiesjoined in te protests, held near a gala eventorganised by the government to celebrate thenew Constitution.

Protesters chanted slogans denouncingthe centre-right Prime Minister, Viktor

Orban, and carried placards denouncing his‘dictatorship’ as officials arrived for the event.

“Viktor Orban and his servants turnedHungary from a promising place to the dark-est spot in Europe,” said Socialist MP TiborSzanyi, quoted by AFP news agency.

Aspects of the new Constitution andaccompanying laws which have come in forcriticism include a preamble committed todefending the intellectual and spiritual unityof the nation, which experts warn could be afuture source of tension.

The new Constitution includes varioussocial issues like the rights of the unbornchild, marriage between a man and awoman, and the definition of life sentences .Many experts say that such issues should beleft to ethical debates within society.

The rewriting of the electoral system, in away which opponents say favours Fidesz

But Fidesz says the new Constitution, orbasic law, improves the legal framework oflife in Hungary.

SSIs lose out to banks-State peek-a-booK Prudhvi [email protected]

Financing and effective pol-icy implementation arethe key growth drivers for

small-scale industries (SSIs).According to the credit guaran-tee investment scheme, thebanks should provide financeup to Rs 1 crore without anycollateral security for manufac-turing units, which a machineryworth up to Rs5 crore.

However, only around 20per cent of banks are providingfinances without security, whilethe rest are demanding 200 percent collateral security to pro-vide finance. This is hinderingnew entrepreneurs to enter SSI,according to J Nageswara Rao,secretary, Federation of AndhraPradesh Small IndustriesAssoci ations (FAPSIA).

The SSI units are lendingmoney at an interest rate of 15per cent. At the end of the year, the SSIs balance sheets arefilled with payments to salaries, term loan- working capital loaninterests, property and othertaxes, and for raw materials, hesays. Drawing a comparisonwith China. He says the Chinesegovernment is offering loans atinterest rates ranging from 6 percent to 8 per cent. They are pro-viding land on long-term leasesat nominal taxes for the devel-opment of the industry.

Leaders and economists saySSI is extremely vital and backbone for the industry. It is allright to hear, but in reality, theyare the worst sufferers.

According to the Govern -ment Orders (GOs), all the pub-lic undertaking companiesshould call for open tendersand buy 20 per cent of theirprocurement from SSIs. This isan initiative from the govern-ment to support SSIs.

As it is not mandatory, nob -ody is buying products fromSSIs. Governments have sch -emes for SSIs by and enlarge inthe form of subsidies. However, some costs are reimbursed onlyeventually. Now, the reimburse-ment is taking from one to twoyears. Due to this late payment, the SSIs end up paying theinterest rates to the banks. Thespirit of the scheme is lost dueto these delays, he explains.

There are no agents or dis-tributors for supply chain. Onlyone man has to manage eachand every department in thecompany. SSIs cannot dictatepricing like large-scale indus-tries. They have to approachcustomers directly, competewith other quotations in theopen market and change theprice according to the cus-tomer. But, large scale indus-tries fix the price keeping thecosts of distribution agents andretailers, he concluded.

These are faces wepass across every day but neverbother to take notice. These peo-ple who struggle to eke out a liv-ing form the backbone of all theessential services we need. Theirstories make for interesting read. Thedetermination with which they battle life’sodds despite paltry earning should inspirethe much better off people like us who keepcribbing about how we are always strug-gling with increasing expenses.

Reality of slumsNo city can wish away its slum clus-ters and Hyderabad is no different. When liberalization acceleratedgrowth, it happened in a skewedmanner. The flow of wealth wasconcentrated in the hands of afew, though that base expandedmore than what it was beforethe 1990s. As more and more

rural poor flooded to cities to try their handsat making lives better the slums too grewand became the source of cheap labour forthe more affluent. They may be poor, unedu-cated and living with broken dreams butdeserve the same respect as everyone else.

Reckless youngstersIt is not fair to blame the police for thedeath of reckless youngstersgetting drunk and endangeringtheir lives. It is not practical forthe cops to man every road andbylane to catch drunken motorists. Those five boys who piled on a sin-gle bike were definitely ignoringevery possible road safety rule. It isthe duty of the parents to educatetheir children on responsible driving andensure that they do not pose danger tothemselves and others. I am sad for theirloss, but this a tragedy that could have beenavoided.

Crush drug gangsThe police are doing a great job inactively pursuing and busting drugrackets in the city. As the storyDrug mafia thwart police (2-1-12) shows, the gangs are get-ting smarter by the day anddevicing better techniques toavoid the police net. They canbe countered only if the

police increase their human intelli-gence network. For example no shady busi-ness happens in the city without the knowl-edge of autorikshaw drivers in that locality— they will provide a treasure trove ofinformation. I wish all the best for the police

‘In passing, also, I would like to say that thefirst time Adam had a chance he laid theblame on a woman.’

Nancy Astor(Nancy Witcher Astor, Viscountess Astor(1879–1964) was the first woman to sit as anMP in the British House of Commons. Sherepresented the Conservative Party and wasthe wife of Waldorf Astor, 2nd Viscount Astor.)

There’s a new word that hangs like asword of Damocles over the patriar-chal male world – Women’sEmpowerment ! And no, it doesn’t

bear resemblance to the aggressive bra burn-ing demonstrations of the equal rights seekingWomen’s Liberation Movement. Legally, thatstatus is already ours. Legally as in, within theparameters of the law. Social, cultural and eco-nomic rules however, operate outside of thislaw. And that is why, this new word — empow-erment — is creating a wave. A quiet butassertive, stealthy and determined wave. Sowhat does this word mean? Unlike liberation, which was freedom from being treated as lessequal, empowerment is an expansion in one’s‘ability to make strategic life choices’ (Kabeer,2001).

In the urban landscape, there is a changeoccurring, in a not-so-obvious social strata —a first generation of working women. Educatedand encouraged by mothers who want a lifebeyond a ‘domestic help’ status for them.Check at home and most will answer that theirchildren are being educated, working for aBPO or an IT company. They even want theirsons to marry working women. The paradigmshave shifted. It is no longer about scroungingan existence; it is about living a better life. Insimpler terms, empowerment is the dignity tochoose a life that was previously denied orunavailable. And what can empowerment in awoman do? It has the capacity to create social, economic and even cultural transformation. This, perhaps is the fact that doesn’t sit wellwith an older belief system.

Part of that transformation is the choice oflifestyle. Whether the choice is to own a vehi-cle, an apartment, eat at restaurants, hang outat coffee shops or party at clubs. And to wearwhat one chooses. There is no denying thatalmost all choices have to be responsible andappropriate ones. Just as there is no denyingthat the hugely successful anti-drunk drivingcampaign is an act of protecting individualsfrom the consequences of irresponsibility. There is also no denying that you blame theperson who drank irresponsibly, not the bottleof alcohol.

So for arguments sake, let’s toss around afew numbers on rape. National Crime RecordsBureau reports a total of 21,397 rape cases in2009.

An increase of over 3% from the previousyear. Whether this 3% came from more crimesbeing committed or being reported is unclear.Of these cases almost 90% were perpetrated bya family member, a friend or neighbour.

Here’s the question: If clothes or the lack ofthem were the issue, how do you explaindomestic sexual violence or marital rape? Howdo you explain over 5,000 cases of sexual vio-lence against children in 2010? Just how does apre-pubescent child titillate?

The bare naked truth is this. You can beatand thrash a man into submission. You can

rape a woman into it. Simple. There is almost nothing sexual about rape.

It is an act of violation, dominance and sub-mission. So if responsibility has to be assigned.Let’s go by numbers again.

How many women were arrested for drunkdriving or drunk driving relatedaccidents/deaths? How many women rapistsor sexual perpetrators do we have?

How many women were arrested for bat-tering their husbands, other than in selfdefence? How many women paedophiles dowe have? How many women burglars?

What was that? Almost a negligible num-ber. Let’s go back to the point of responsibility.Purely by statistics, that would make womennot just highly responsible citizens but nurtur-ers and protectors, would it not? So are we get-ting kudos for that or for growing into impor-tant economic and social contributors to ourfamilies?

This blame game is as old as Adam andEve. But you don’t have to go that far back inhistory. Just google ‘women should dress mod-estly to avoid rape’ to understand that this is awidespread phenomenon across the world! This isn’t about moral policing. This is aboutan ingrained belief system. This isn’t aboutclothes at all; it is about wearing a woman’sbody!

GOVT CAN’T BE boozers’ keeper

Even before the pyres of thosewho died in the Mylavaram

hooch tragedy went out, more than a dozen who consumedspurious liquor in Vijayawada havebeen hospitalised. The governmentis being blamed for its ineffective-

ness in preventing the flow of spuri-ous liquor in the State, especially

during the festival season. Everyonewho buys bootleggers’ brew is

aware of the risks and the govern-ment can’t be expected to be pre-

sent in every corner of the stateconducting raids and quality checks

on the thousands of bootleggers. This is a deadly gamble tipplers

willingly take and they alone areresponsible for the consequences.

What political parties are doingnow by attacking the government

are cheap gimmicks to ensure theirpresence in the news as they them-selves don’t have anything credibleto offer. Instead of suggesting unre-alistic policies like prohibition, theyshould have the courage to accept

that alcohol consumption is a reali-ty that will stay, and sensible andresponsible drinking alone delays

meeting the maker.

WHY WE LOVE...Green Pitches

Some whine about them;some enjoy them.

Many think cricket tobe a batsman’s game. But on

green pitches, the scales tiptowards fast bowlers. True pacerslove this kind of track for the sole

reason that even the best ofbatsmen can be foxed with varia-tions of bounce and pace. It takes

immense patience and couragefor a batsman to survive and

score. Those touted the best ofthe best will have to struggle tolive up to their names. But to a

true cricket fan, green pitchesmake for exciting cricket.

The site of resectionplays a role

Dr Manu Tandan

What is resection of the intestineand why is it done?Resection of the intestine is the termused when a part of the small intes-tine is cut and the two healthy endsare anastomosed together. Thedeficit which results due to thisresection depends uponn Site of resectionn Length of intestine resectionn The underlying disease whether

stationery or progressiveResection of small lengths of

intestine especially in the midjejunum and ileum results in no sig-nificant disability as the remainingintestine compensates and takesover function of the lost area. Thisgenerally occurs over a few months.

At the other end of the spectrum, resection of a large length of thesmall intestine will result in a condi-tion call the short bowel syndrome. This condition results in malabsorp-tion of all nutrients and patient’shealth generally deteriorates.

Management consists of replace-ment of lost nutrients and often is achallenge to the treating physician. The commonest cause of infectionleading to resection of large lengthsof the small intestine is the interrup-tion or blocking of the feeding bloodvessels. This leads to the develop-ment of intestinal gangrene. It is amedical emergency and treatment isresection of the entire diseased area.

In patients with tumours andulcers, smallers areas are resected.Resection of small lengths or in spe-cific areas like the last part of theileum results in loss of specific nutri-ents and vitamins and producesanaemia or neurological damage.

Diseases of small intestine whicheventually lead to resection are rela-tively rare when compared to dis-eases of the rest of the gastrointesti-nal system. A high degree of suspi-cion is necessary for the treatingphysician to come at the correctdiagnosis.

Skin carecan keepacne atbay

Celebs who’vehad acne n Cameron Diazn Britney Spearsn Sealn Brad Pittn Jerry Garcian Keira Knightleyn John Abrahamn Celina Jaitleyn Madhuri Dixitn Zayed Khan

Ranjani [email protected]

Who doesn’t long for a face thatboasts of flawless skin with apeaches and cream complex-ion? Or maybe adolescence

that is free of ugly pimples that refuse togo without leaving a scar on that other-wise beautiful face? Everybody lusts foralabaster skin like Keira Knightley’s ormaybe Cameron Diaz. But that gorgeousskin that celebrities flaunt so proudly onthe magic screen or on billboards are theresult of clever make up and extensive airbrushing. There are few people who areblessed with healthy skin. Pimples, white-heads, black heads and scars are com-monplace and there’s little you can doabout it — except proper skin care.

So what is Acne?Acne is a skin condition when there

are breakouts of inflammations that marthe surface of the skin. This usuallyoccurs when pores become clogged dueto the sebaceous secretions released bythe skin. The oil and dirt get trapped andform what is called a comedone and ifthese break open they form pimples.

Experts say“The cause for acne could be hormon-

al or hereditary,” says Dr ShahinaShafeeq, dermatologist at Max polyclinic, adding, “While there is no home remedy,it is advisable to consult a dermatologistfor proper treatment.”

Dr Radha Shah agrees. “Acne can alsobe caused due to stress, hormonal

changes during puberty, thyroid, polycys-tic ovarian disorder and in some casesdue to sudden and vigorous exercising,”she says. While hormonal changes arecommon in people, how an individual’s

body reacts to these changes varies.

Treatment“It is essential to determine the cause

for acne. Treatment can be accordinglycharted out,” says Dr Shahina. “If acne ismild ointments can be prescribed. In caseit is severe then oral tablets, suitable facewashes and chemical peels can be recom-mended,” she says.

“The mainstay of the treatment islocal care,” says Dr Radha, adding,“Washing the face three to four times aday helps. Also creams with tretinoin, benzoyl peroxide and adapalene helptreat acne.”

Tea tree oil is a good option. In casethe acne is bad then short courses ofantibiotics or isotretinoin can be recom-mended. But these should be under adoctor’s guidance.

“Surgically one can opt for comedoneexpression, chemical peels, microder-mabrasion or laser treatments to controlthe problem,” says Dr Radha.

Despite popular belief that oily andspicy food cause acne there is proof ofthe same.

Skin care mattersn Figure out a face wash and moisturiserthat suit your skin. Wash your face regular-ly and moisturise well. If you have oily skinthen avoid heavy moisturisers.n If you find a facial eruption then seektreatment early.n Follow a healthy diet and load up onfresh fruits and vegetables.n Don’t get carried with marketing tactics.Make sure the product suits your skin.

“I am comfortable withdoing mashups and I do a lot oflive mixing as well, especiallywith the top 40 picks of the

Even thoughthe genre has been popular sincethe late 90s, the Indian crowd hasonly recently welcomed it.”Constantly reinventing himselfand updating his technical skillsto be at par with the internation-al music scene, Kanna’s advice toupcoming DJ’s is, “Whateverchance you get, just keep practis-ing and also stay in school.”

Robert PattinsonHe is one vampire that no one is

scared of. This British lad made headlines because of the out-of-bed-look that he sported for the Twilightmovies franchise. A little less knownfact is the man is not as fond of hishair as his fans. The tousled mop ofhair that made women go gaga nolonger graces his head. But Novembersaw him sporting a haircut which mostdefinitely made every girl’s heart achewith disappointment. The Twilight staris sporting this weird new hairstyle forhis upcoming movie Cosmopolis.Hopefully his superhot previous haircutand fan following will see him throughthis one. Like they say everyone has abad hair day, Robert only seems to be having a long one here.

They say shoes can tell you allabout a man, we say the samegoes for the hairstyle he sports.

For instance, who can forget ElvisPresley, the King of Rock, whochanged his brown hair to black andshaped it in the ducktail style popu-lar at the time. But what made Elvis’sstyle even more distinct is that hekept his hair a bit longer and swept itinto a high pompadour at the front.

It is said that he used three differ-ent kinds of hair wax to style hislocks, but who said good things comeeasy? Today we list a few celebritieswhose hairstyles have caught thefancy of the youth.

Everybody looks to celebrities for inspiration on style. From celebritieswith long hair to those that are clipped, shaved or even bald, men have

always had a steady source for style tips. Clothing and accessories apart, celebrity hairstyles are one of the most followed trends among men. We

check out whose hair is making waves

ManeaDavid BeckhamThe ace footballer, who manages to make womengo weak in their knees even now, has tried everyhairstyle possible. Every haircut he sported turnedinto a rage across Britian and the rest of the world.Walk into a college or club, all you could see wasboys with poker straight spikes. His experiment withthe mohawk was probably his most iconic moment,as this look spawned a worldwide frenzy. Every manseemed smitten by this look, men turned up inoffices looking like they were about to go huntingany moment and colleges were awash with boysand girls sporting the mohawk. Apart from these, hehas also had the Rod Stewart look, the skinhead andeven the braided hair look. With style diva VictoriaBeckham as his better half and a fan followingacross genders, we are sure his hairy tales will continue for years to come.

Zac EfronThis young Hollywood heart-throb,with a combination of the choco-late-boy looks and oh-so-suavedemeanour is a hit with the teenbrigade. Along his penchant forfashion, Efron has always managedto come up with differenthairstyles. Apart from his layeredhairstyle which had set many heartsaflutter, mid 2010 saw him in a pol-ished yet scruffy look with hairswitched up keeping in mind thelength and volume. The moustacheand beard added to the mature andhot look. But in 2011, he was spotted at People’s Choice Awardsin a completely new avatar, sport-ing a clean crew cut which gavehim a casual yet a crisp look. Hesure has our thumbs-up for thisone.

Justin Bieber He had the world

eating out of his handsthe first time he sangthe song Baby. Fromthen on this singingsensation has been thesubject of every younggirl’s fantasy. But he ispopular with the boys,if not for his singing, then for the coolhairstyles he’s adopt-ed. By his own admis-sion, Justin’s source ofinspiration is DavidBeckham. From hisgolden swoop stylewhich made every girldrool over him; to hisswitch to spikes, everything seems tosuit this style icon. Now it is the swish, which even the WallStreet Journal hastermed the most influ-ential haircuts of 2011.So, keep it low orswitch it up, this youthicon sure has a waywith hair and womenalike!

Ifeel happy when I don’t winany awards because that

inspires me to do better,”Sana remarks as she talks

about her 15-year career dur-ing which she has acted in

more than 400 films and TVserials. Being a character artistdoes have its share of benefits

and when you are blessed withhumility and a passion for

what you do, it is not surprisingthat she has been so successful.

She confesses that she alwayshad a dream of opening a

school and be known as a goodactor. “I am here to act and

that’ll always be my first priori-ty,” she smiles.

Sana attributes the successof her career so far to her in-laws. “I got married at a very

young age and I am blessed tohave in-laws who pampered

me more than my parents. Myfather-in-law wanted me to

study further and at one point,I had even applied for an Air

Hostess job with IndianAirlines. Then, in 1995, I saw an

advertisement in a newspaperwhere a modelling agency wasscouting for new models and I

wanted to give it a shot.Thankfully, my mother-in-lawsupported me and I ended upgetting an assignment. Soon,

my posters were all over thetown,” she recalls. She can’t

stop blushing as she talksabout her initial days and we

ask her about how she got herfirst big break. “Krishna Vamsi

wanted to cast me in NinnePelladutha after he saw me atAnnapurna Studios. Till then I

hadn’t signed any film becauseI was scared that I might end

up misusing the freedomwhich my in-laws had given

me. After three months, when Ifinally met Krishna

Vamsi, I realised what agem of a person he

was. We bonded quitewell on the sets and that

was the first and last time inmy career where the

entire team was intears on the last day of

the film’s shoot,” shesays.

Recently, sheappeared in Bapu’s Sri

Rama Rajyam andSuseendran’s Veedinthe,

where she played anegative role.“Suseendran

wanted me tolearn all

my dialogues in Tamil and Ihad put in a lot of effort for myrole. Sometimes, I used to have

sleepless nights but I am gladthat my hard work has paid

off,” she says. We remind herabout her role as Kaikeyi in Sri

Rama Rajyam. “That wasn’t myfirst mythological role. I must

be the only actress who hasplayed almost every Hindu

Goddess you can think of rightfrom Adi Parashakti to

Vengamamba,” she chuckles, “Iam lucky to have worked withso many directors and peoplewho have always encouraged

me. I didn’t even have a chanceto look back and retrospect

whether I should do a film ornot. I can’t say no to people.

Maybe that’s part of myupbringing. Sometimes, people

insist that I act in their filmseven though it’s for one or two

scenes.” What about filmswhere her role is mercilesslychopped off? “It does hurt at

times but the important aspect

is that, the film is more impor-tant than anything else,” she

replies. Her son heads Evergreen

Studios, which produces TVserials for Vijay TV, MAA TV

and her daughter is a fashiondesigner. “We are more like

friends and thanks to them andmy husband, I am quite con-

tent with my life,” she signs off.

She shot to fame thanks toher much appreciated roleas Kareena on the televi-sion serial Kareena

Kareena but Kulraj Randhawahas come out of that shadow andis now slowly but steadily makingher way into Bollywood. Unlikemost newcomers, the actor istaking it slow by being extremelycareful with the films she choos-es and has made sure that shedoes not have too much on herplate in a given year. While lastyear it was the comic caperYamla Pagla Deewana with theDeols, this year she will be seenin a romantic comedy directedby Samir Karnik titled Char DinKi Chandni, in which she ispaired opposite Tusshar Kapoor.

This is perhaps the first timeKulraj will play a pivotal role in afilm. “I did Chintuji with RishiKapoor where I played an impor-tant role but unfortunately thefilm wasn’t promoted well. InYamla Pagla Deewana, I played asweet girl but there was notmuch scope for performance, however, Char Din Ki Chandni isgoing to change all of that. Here,I am getting a great opportunityand it’s a complete package,”shares Kulraj who ishappy with howher characterhas shaped upin the film.

Talkingabout her role,

she says, “I play this well-educat-ed NRI Punjabi girl who falls inlove with a Rajasthani boy.” CharDin Ki Chandni is about fourdays that are spent during a wed-ding in Rajasthan. It shows theclashes between Punjabi andRajasthani cultures. “It is a funfilm and is a complete entertain-er,” informs Kulraj.

The entire schedule of thefilm was shot in Rajasthan andKulraj had good fun on the setsand she terms it as her “favouriteoutdoor shoot ever”. “Every filmis a great learning experienceand this one in particular is myfavourite because I got to inter-act with senior actors. I learntand picked up a lot of interestingtips on acting,” quips an excitedKulraj.

Talking about workingwith Tusshar Kapoor, Kulrajsays, “I was quite surprised

after working with Tusshar,he is more than willing toabsorb anything new. He

is always ready tolisten and

we

shared great onscreen chemistry.Tusshar has done justice to hisrole in the film and has come outas a different person.”

On a more personal note weinquire if there was any truth inthe reports that Kulraj and SamirKarnik have been seeing eachother. Kulraj is quick to refute allreports and instead praises himfor his directorial abilities. “Samiras a director is just great andanyone will be willing to work

with him. He madesure to

explainthe

character in detail and so Ijumped at it as the role as itexcited me a lot. Samir is confi-dent and interactive as a directorand clear about what he wantsfrom his actors,” offers Kulraj.

For Kulraj, who belongs to anon-filmy background, breakinginto Bollywood was quite astruggle. “My father is from thearmy and to understand theindustry, I took some time. Icouldn’t underplay nor go over-board with the acting. I was look-ing for the right sort of scriptsand was choosy about the castand crew I worked with, which Ithink is a good thing to do as itshows my calibre,” says Kulraj, going on to add, “I always try tobe one step ahead by performingin different mediums, whether itbe regional or Hindi films. Inever had a mentor, I just metdifferent people and learnedsince I can’t follow anyone blind-ly. Everyone has their own per-ception, and I just went with theflow. Destiny has an importantrole to play, and I have not beenover confident. I am happy withmy work so far and don’t seemyself doing anything other than

this. Films are serious busi-ness which some people

fail to understand, theythink it’s just about

picnics and make-up.”

We get the driftKulraj!

who are like daughters to her parents. Asmuch as they are all close to each other,

they get insecure that she can’t meet themas often as they like due to her film com-mitments.There have also been timeswhen this has led to misunderstandingsamongst them, but Asin says she has

always made it a point to clarify the matterbefore it got out of hand. She even admitted that shesays “sorry” though it may not be her fault, and thatshe she will continue to do so forever. The episode ofSuperstar Santa, featuring Asin, will air Sunday. IANS

How to Play KakuroKakuro is a popular game similar to sudoku in some ways. But is alsosuitably different. The key question: “How do you play Kakuro?”, wellhere are the rules of kakuro. The answer: The kakuro grid, unlike insudoku, can be of any size. It has rows and columns, and dark cells likein a crossword. And, just like in a crossword, some of the dark cells willcontain numbers. Some cells will contain two numbers.

However, in a crossword the numbers reference clues. In a kakuro, the numbers are all you get! They denote the total of the digits in therow or column referenced by the number.

Within each collection of cells - called a run - any of the numbers 1to 9 may be used but, like sudoku, each number may only be used once.

Let’s have an example to explain this concept more clearly:In the image above, which shows a section of a kakuro puzzle, you

will see the numbers ‘26’ and ‘14’ in the top row. Look at the 14. Thismeans that the total of the three cells underneath must sum to 14.Therefore 9, 4, 1 could be the answer, or perhaps 7, 4, 3 and so on...

So, how do you work out the actual combination? Well, this is donethrough elimination and cross-referencing. For instance, as you work outthe answers for other kakuro clues, this will naturally limit the valid com-binations, and hence the answer for this particular run.

Note the second cell in row two - it contains two numbers, 30 and11. The 30 refers to the vertical run underneath the number 30 and the11 refers to the two cells to the right, horizontally, of the number 11.

SAN RAFAEL: Qatar’s defe -nding Dakar Rally car champi-on Nasser Al-Attiyah reboundedfrom losing 10 minutes on thefirst stage by taking Monday’ssecond stage here.

The 31-year-old — who hadan engine problem with hisHummer in Sunday’s opener —beat Mini’s StephanePeterhansel of France by 54 sec-onds in the 290km drive fromSanta Rosa de la Pampa.

Peterhansel — a six-timeDakar motorcycling championand three times in the car sec-tion — took the overall leadahead of Al-Attiyah’s Hummerteam-mate Robby Gordon ofthe United States.

Al-Attiyah, who moved up tosixth, won despite his wind-screen smashing and admittedthat he needed to drive morecarefully in the forthcomingstages.

“We broke the window, andit was very difficult because ittook a lot of time to pass theother cars,” said the Qatari, whostarted in 38th position.

“I just said that we had tohave a good strategy and show

we were still in the race.“However, we must be more

clever.”Peterhansel said that he had

not found many opportunitiesto gain time on his rivals.

“The start of the special wasfast, so it wasn’t possible to steala march on any of the otherdrivers,” said the 46-year-old.

“We felt better at the end

when it started to bump arounda bit and get trickier around thedunes.”

Gordon cursed his luck atnot taking the stage on whatwas his 43rd birthday.

“It was a good day for us,everything about the car wasgood,” said Gordon, whose bestfinish in the race was third in2009.

“However, we hit a big rockand got a puncture and I reckonthat, without that, we couldhave won the stage.”

Motorcycling championMarc Coma had earlier won his17th career stage in the race.

The Spaniard moved to thetop of the standings after win-ning the 295km second stagewhich also saw him extend hislead over KTM team-mate andmain rival Cyril Despres.

Despres finished second inthe stage but was 1min 18sec inarrears of Coma.

First stage winner Francisco“Chaleco” Lopez of Chile wasahead at the first time markerbut faded to finish fourth overtwo minutes behind Coma.

Coma said that he had

enjoyed the initial tussle withLopez.

“Chaleco and me were rid-ing at top speed and let me tellyou, the Aprilia is very, veryquick,” said Coma.

“After that, we arrived atthe second part of the specialwith sand and dunes. It was alot more technical, with some

navigation to do as well. I tookthe lead and kept riding at agood pace. I’m happy because Ididn’t get lost. So, it’s been agood day for me!” added the35-year-old.

Despres nevertheless expe-rienced a better day than hehad on Sunday — when he fin-ished 13th.

INDIA VS AUSTRALIA 30

n Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni took a gam-ble by batting first on a wicket which was certain tohelp faster bowlers. It did not pay off.

n Dhoni should not be blamed as the Indian batsmenlacked application once again. Many of them werecaught searching for the ball off the front foot.

n The Australian fast men deserve full credit for bowl-ing good lengths, keeping it full and letting the ball dothe rest. James Pattinson was once again the leader ofthe pack, his outswingers proving lethal.

n Dhoni, and to a certain extent, Sachin Tendulkar, were the only batsmen who assessed the pitch proper-ly. Dhoni stuck to backfoot play and got his first half-century in Australia.

n India’s bowlers have started well. Zaheer Khan’sdouble blow at the start has given hope. India mustkeep Australia’s total within 250 to get back intothe match.

INDIA VS AUSTRALIA 31

India were skittled for 191as young Australian pace-man James Pattinsonripped out the heart of

the tourists' powerful battingline-up in the second Testagainst Australia in Sydney onTuesday.

Skipper M.S. Dhoni topscoredwith an unbeaten 57 as thetourists fell apart again afterbeing routed for 169 in the sec-ond innings of last week's firstMelbourne Test, which they lostby 122 runs.

Amid the carnage, SachinTendulkar, Test cricket's greatest

run-scorer, was bowled off aninside edge for 41, givingPattinson his fourth wicket.

Pattinson, 21, playing in onlyhis fourth Test match, was thechief destroyer and had figures offour for 43 off 14 overs, with wick-etkeeper Brad Haddin and short-leg fielder Ed Cowan taking threecatches each.

Pattinson triggered thetourists' slide when he hadGautam Gambhir out off the thirdball of the Test, nudging anoutswinger to first slip MichaelClarke for a duck to continue hispoor series.

India have now gone 10 Testinnings without a half-centuryopening stand.

Rahul Dravid fell to a bat-padcatch to Cowan in Peter Siddle'ssecond over for five off 33 balls.

Virender Sehwag had a "life"on 23 when he was dropped byRicky Ponting at second slip offBen Hilfenhaus.

But Sehwag was out to anoth-er splendid Pattinson delivery, nicking to Haddin for 30 off 51balls in the 19th over.

Pattinson, bowling with beau-tiful shape, tempted V.V.S.Laxman to drive, only to edge to

Shaun Marsh at third slip for adisappointing two after scores oftwo and one in Melbourne.

It was a rare batting failure forLaxman at the SCG, which statis-tically is his most productivescoring venue outside of India.

In five previous Test inningsat the ground he had scoredthree hundreds and averaged96.20 and his cheap dismissal leftIndia struggling at 59 for four.

Australia were 106 for 3 withRicky Pontin at 36 and MichealClarke at 44 when they came outto bat. Zaheer led the Indianbowlers with 3 for 26.

MANCHESTER: Sir Alex Ferguson will belooking for a typical response from hisManchester United side when they head toNewcastle on Wednesday.

The Premier League champions suf-fered a surprise 3-2 home defeat onDecember 31 and although leaders City alsoslipped up with a defeat at Sunderland,Ferguson will still be deeply frustrated atthe lost points.

United are still in the grips of an injurycrisis and there will be plenty of attentionon Wayne Rooney ahead of Wednesday’smatch.

The England striker missed theBlackburn game and has reportedly beenfined, along with Jonny Evans and DarronGibson, after an ill-timed night out follow-ing the 5-0 victory over Wigan.

Ferguson has acknowledged that themanner of United’s defeats this season havebeen particularly painful.

After the 6-1 home loss to neighboursManchester City in October, they wereknocked out of the League Cup byChampionship team Crystal Palace and alsoslipped out of the Champions League witha shock defeat in Basel.

Ferguson described the 3-2 home defeatto Blackburn, which came on his 70thbirthday, as “a disaster.”

But as he looks for his United team tobounce back once again, at least he canconsole himself with their impressive recentrecord at St James’ Park.

United have not lost there since a 4-3defeat in 2001 but they will be keen to makeup for their 1-1 home draw with Newcastlein November. Despite his team’s ongoinginjury concerns, Ferguson does not expectto dip into the transfer market this month.

The United manager has consistentlyignored the winter window in recent yearsand has not made any major additions

since snapping up Nemanja Vidicand Patrice Evra in 2006.
