Why engage in development activities?

“Taking part in the PhD Spotlight competition was a brilliant opportunity to practice presenting my research to both academic and non-academic audiences. It raised the profile of my work and has led to a number of other collaborations and opportunities to present and work alongside other researchers. The Spotlight event not only demonstrates the success of your project, but also your willingness to actively engage with academia and the public beyond. I would strongly encourage any PhD researcher to apply.” – Rosie Smith, winner of YorkTalks 2017 PhD Spotlight competition

“Very useful, just gives a clear guide and makes you organise your thoughts about what to do next and how to avoid bad surprises in the future, extremely helpful. Thanks.” – participant on Completing your Thesis

YLTA attracts PhD students who are looking to differentiate themselves from the other 35,000 UK PhD students. Compared to other Russell Group universities, York has a higher than average percentage of PhD students who have gained employment in Higher Education - Based on DHLE data 2013/14

Completing forms in SkillsForge

Agree in the meeting who will be responsible for completing the form.

Nominated person completes form and saves, only, and notifies the next person that the form is ready for their contribution.

Once all parties have added their comments, and the form reaches the final person in the group, that individual should then initiate the sign-off process.

Signing a form entails a three stage process:

1. Click against your name at the bottom of the form

2. Click ‘sign’ underneath the list of signatories

3. Save by clicking ‘Save’ or ‘Confirm’ in the top right of the form

INTRODUCTION TO YORK’S COLLEGES Keith Kinsella

Assistant Head of Derwent College

Research Excellence

Page 52: Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) Induction 2016. · PDF fileVoice •3 Minute Thesis competition ... Preparing for Your Viva ... Sue Hartley Environmental Sustainability and Resilience

What can Colleges do for you?

• Intergenerational, interdisciplinary, international, (can’t think of anymore ‘inters’) communities.

• Meet people from outside your programme of study.

Page 53: Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) Induction 2016. · PDF fileVoice •3 Minute Thesis competition ... Preparing for Your Viva ... Sue Hartley Environmental Sustainability and Resilience

Activities • You will have access to social areas and computer rooms.

• Colleges offer a range of opportunities to socialise; present and

discuss your research; play sport or try something different.

• I never realised how much I enjoyed pumpkin carving before I became an Assistant Head of College!

• Opportunities to take your mind off work and just ‘be’.

Page 54: Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) Induction 2016. · PDF fileVoice •3 Minute Thesis competition ... Preparing for Your Viva ... Sue Hartley Environmental Sustainability and Resilience

Well-being • College Tutors – coffee; a listening ear; introduce you to

others. • College Staff – 1:2:1 support; signposting to other services. • College committees – colleges are democratic; our students

work with us to lead them. You don’t have to remember everything from today – your college team are there to signpost and offer advice when you need it!

Page 55: Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) Induction 2016. · PDF fileVoice •3 Minute Thesis competition ... Preparing for Your Viva ... Sue Hartley Environmental Sustainability and Resilience

What did you do before your PG?

Page 56: Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) Induction 2016. · PDF fileVoice •3 Minute Thesis competition ... Preparing for Your Viva ... Sue Hartley Environmental Sustainability and Resilience

What you can do for your college… • Keep doing the things that make you ‘you’ – just

because you are a PG doesn’t mean you have to stop socialising.

• Colleges are ‘alive’ – if students don’t engage then we are just a bunch of buildings.

• Your studies are important but try to look after the ‘whole you’ – do something you enjoy; go along to that cheese and wine evening…. Go and play some netball.

• Take a risk…..
