MUSICThe orchestra is conducted by Mr Richard Dickins, Director of Music and the Blyth Centre at Imperial. The violin solo is performed by Tudor Trita, a first year Mathematics student who is leader of the Imperial College Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the National Theatre Orchestra of Mannheim and the Philharmonia Orchestra of Madrid.

ACADEMIC DRESSAcademic dress has its origins in medieval Europe, when it identified the rank and profession of the wearer. Today, academic dress denotes the graduate’s institution and the level of degree awarded.

The unifying theme of academic dress at Imperial is the colour purple. This is an homage to the work of Royal College of Chemistry alumnus Sir William Henry Perkin, who invented mauveine, the world’s first synthetic purple dye, in 1856.

Master’s graduands wear black gowns and black hoods with white and purple lining. The coloured stripe on the collar of the hood denotes Faculty affiliation. MPhil graduands wear black gowns and black hoods with purple lining. PhD, DEng, MD and DSc graduands wear purple hoods and purple gowns: the sleeves of PhD, DEng and MD graduands are purple, while those of DSc graduands are white.

Today, the Royal Albert Hall is the historic location for Imperial’s postgraduate and undergraduate graduation ceremonies.

ABOUT THE DAY

Graduations are a highlight of the College year, a time when we welcome back our graduating students, together with families and friends, to celebrate outstanding academic achievement.

THE COLLEGE COAT OF ARMSThe College coat of arms was assigned by Royal Warrant on 6 June 1908. Coats of arms date back to the twelfth century, and continue to be used by well-established and respected corporate bodies as a mark of identification.

The shield incorporates the royal coat of arms and a book, representing knowledge. The motto, which reads Scientia imperii decus et tutamen, can be translated as ‘Scientific knowledge, the crowning glory and the safeguard of the empire’.

THE IMPERIAL MACEThe Imperial College London Mace was presented to the College by the Goldsmiths’ Company in 2009 in recognition of Imperial’s status as a university in its own right. The generous gift reflects the livery company’s longstanding relationship with Imperial and its predecessor institutions.

The intricate design of the Mace incorporates elements of the College’s coat of arms and its motto. The helix-shaped stem represents human DNA or a chain of atoms in a spiral, providing a visual reference to the College’s expertise in science and medicine.

The Mace is a focal point of the College’s graduation ceremonies: it heralds the arrival of the Provost, President and Chair of Council during the Procession.

Graduations for Imperial College London have taken place in the Royal Albert Hall for over 60 years. The Hall, which opened in 1871, was part of Prince Albert’s grand vision for a cultural, scientific and artistic quarter in South Kensington. Given that Imperial also has its origins in this vision, it is fitting that the College should celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates here.

The order for the day is:

10.30: Graduation ceremony for Imperial College Business School and the School for Professional Development

13.45: Graduation ceremony for the Faculties of Natural Sciences and Medicine

17.00: Graduation ceremony for the Faculty of Engineering

Celebratory canapé receptions will be held on campus following each ceremony at locations indicated on your reception tickets.

PHOTOGRAPHYPlease note that unauthorised video recording and photography are not permitted in the Royal Albert Hall. Professional photographers will be in the Imperial College Union during the day to take portrait photographs of graduands.

Above: The exterior of the Royal Albert Hall, shown here in the late nineteenth century, is built from over 6 million red bricks and 80,000 blocks of terracotta.

The Molecular Sciences Research Hub, with Chemistry research facilities at its core, will open in 2018.

OUR FUTURESince 2007, Imperial College London has consolidated its position as one of the world’s leading universities in the fields of science, engineering, medicine and business. Imperial’s strength in these core disciplines has allowed it to push the boundaries of what a university can do, with the community working together to solve major global challenges.

Academics and students at Imperial are at the forefront of multidisciplinary research. They are supported by institutes and initiatives that bring researchers from across the College together. These include the Antimicrobial Research Collaborative, the Grantham Institute for Climate Change and the Environment, the Brevan Howard Centre for Financial Analysis, and the Energy Futures Lab. Collaborations such as the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Singapore, which was established in 2010 with Nanyang Technological University, have shown how partnerships extend the impact of Imperial’s work.

As the world changes, so will Imperial’s education. Building on recent initiatives such as the new curriculum developed for the Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial will embed its education in a research-led, entrepreneurial environment and provide a broad range of services and support for students beyond their studies.

Imperial’s newest campus at White City provides the College with the opportunity to develop new partnerships, support new areas of research, diversify revenue streams and give students entrepreneurial experience. The I-HUB (Translation & Innovation Hub) opened in 2016, providing facilities for close collaboration with partner institutions and companies. The Molecular Sciences Research Hub, with Chemistry research facilities at its core, will open in 2018, and construction of the Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub, made possible with a generous gift from the foundation of alumnus Sir Michael Uren OBE, began earlier this year.

LEADING LIGHTS

Here are just some of the figures who shaped Imperial’s history and changed the world during their time at Imperial.

SIR WILLIAM HENRY PERKINIn 1856, while studying at the Royal College of Chemistry, Perkin discovered the first coal tar dye, mauveine. His discovery of the synthetic purple dye revolutionised fabric colouring, bringing bright colours to the masses for the first time, and transformed the science of chemistry.

DR MARTHA ANNIE WHITELEYWhiteley joined the Royal College of Science as a teaching scholar in the Department of Chemistry in 1904, and by 1920 had progressed to the role of Assistant Professor. She was the first woman to hold a position on the teaching staff at the College, and was awarded the OBE in 1920 for the contribution of her research in the First World War.

SIR ALEXANDER FLEMINGIn the course of his research at St Mary’s Hospital, Fleming discovered the fungal mould penicillium notarum. His 1928 breakthrough, and the subsequent work of Sir Ernst Chain and Sir Hugh Florey to isolate and concentrate penicillin, was recognised in 1945 with a Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine.

SIR DEREK BARTONBarton’s work on the spatial arrangements of organic molecules and reactions mechanisms, was undertaken while he was Professor of Organic Chemistry between 1957 and 1972. His research transformed how chemists think about molecules in three-dimensional space, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (with Odd Hassel) in 1969.

PROFESSOR JOAN WOODWARDAs a lecturer and subsequently professor in Industrial Sociology, Woodward undertook pioneering research into organisational structures in technology and production systems. Woodward Hall, a College Hall of Residence which opened in 2015, was named in her honour.

PROFESSOR DENIS GABORDuring the 1940s, Gabor began to experiment with holography, a process which allows the storage of propagating optical wavefronts for later reconstruction. For this research, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1971, the first engineer to receive the accolade.

PROFESSOR RODNEY ROBERT PORTER Porter was Pfizer Professor of Immunology at St Mary’s Hospital between 1960 and 1967, during which time he conducted research into the blood’s immunoglobin. In 1972, he was awarded Nobel Prize for Medicine of Physiology with G.M. Edelmen for their work on determining the exact structure of an antibody.

IMPERIAL’S PAST AND FUTURE

OUR HISTORYImperial was founded in 1907 with the merger of the Royal School of Mines, the Royal College of Science and the City and Guilds Central Technical College. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, each institution had played a crucial part in establishing science education and research in Britain, employing some of the finest minds in their respective areas of expertise. Each had also found a home in South Kensington, an area which, under the patronage of Prince Albert, had become a hub for science, culture and education.

The Royal Charter which formed the Imperial College of Science and Technology described its remit as “giving the highest specialised instruction, and providing the fullest equipment for the most advanced training and research in various branches of science, especially in its application to industry”. The College swiftly began expanding its presence in South Kensington, constructing an extension to the City and Guilds College, a new building for the Royal School of Mines, and the Beit Buildings.

During the two world wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45, thousands of Imperial students and staff volunteered for service. On the home front, several of the College buildings were commandeered by the government and military. Staff and alumni undertook critical war-related

scientific research in fields including munitions, aeronautics and medicine.

The post-war period saw unprecedented growth at Imperial, as science and technology were seen as increasingly critical to facing the challenges of the twentieth century. New disciplines were introduced, including nuclear science and engineering, and computing and control.

After a series of mergers between the College and major medical schools, the Imperial College School of Medicine (now the Faculty of Medicine) was established in 1997. The Business School was granted a status equivalent to a College faculty in 2003, and a year later moved to its current location with the opening of the College Main Entrance.

As the College approached its centenary, the decision was made to withdraw from the University of London, a federation of which Imperial had been a part since 1908. The College’s independence was formalised in 2007, and the first students to receive degrees of Imperial College London began their degrees later that year.

For over 100 years, Imperial College London has been at the forefront of scientific discovery and innovation, a unique institution dedicated to enduring excellence in research and education.

Elizabeth the Queen Mother visits the College on Charter Day 1957 to open the Roderick Hill Building.

The Queen’s Tower, under construction in this image from 1886, was originally part of the Imperial Institute. Whilst the rest of the Institute was demolished from 1957 to 1968, the iconic tower was saved by a public campaign and is now in the custody of Imperial.

The I-HUB is the first building to open at Imperial's White City Campus. It facilitates the co-location of start-ups, entrepreneurs, spin-out companies and major corporations with the College's academic community.

“ We identified a problem with current ultrasound technology both in its cost but also its lack of scalability. Our supervisor helped us shape our vision and use our technical expertise to scale it down to the size and cost we need.” Hamid Soleimani, PhD student in Bioengineering and winner of the 2017 Venture Catalyst Challenge

Imperial is home to many world leading pioneers in science, engineering, business and medicine, and the alma mater to generations of award winners, government advisors, business leaders, politicians and entrepreneurs.

Research at the College is multidisciplinary, with academics working with partners around the globe to tackle the greatest challenges we will face in the coming years, from sustainable healthcare to harnessing the power of the data revolution. Today’s graduates have been firmly embedded in a vibrant, research-led environment, learning alongside researchers who are experts in their fields. Imperial researchers are making new breakthroughs every day. Here are some of the highlights of the past year.

ACROSS THE BREXIT DIVIDEIn the run-up to the UK referendum on membership of the European Union, research from Imperial College Business School showed that Twitter users who engaged with others of opposing political views, alongside those of the same viewpoint, were more likely to spread their message further online. The research, led by Imperial Business Analytics with KPMG, indicated that Twitter users who supported Leave were three times more likely to engage with people from both sides than those who supported Remain. This willingness to break out of the ‘echo chamber’ pattern led to increased influence in the political debate.

FEATHERS FOR THE FUTUREThe poultry industry generates thousands of tonnes of waste feathers each day. Elena Dieckmann and Ryan Robinson, PhD students in Design Engineering and the National Heart and Lung Institute respectively, are exploring the potential of this lightweight, strong and insulating product. So far their start-up, Aeropowder, has created Featherfill, a low-carbon composite insulating material. The product won the team £20,000 at the 2016 Mayor of London’s Low Carbon Entrepreneur Challenge competition, and they are now exploring how feathers could be used to create a water repellent coating that renders any surface hydrophobic; a lightweight filler for plastics, and a structural fibre to reinforce concrete.

DISRUPTIVE TECHNOLOGYBy 2020, a boom in the popularity of solar panels and electric cars could spark irreversible changes in the energy sector, according to research published by the Grantham Institute – Climate Change and the Environment. As countries switch to ‘low-carbon’ technologies to meet their commitments to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, and those technologies in turn become less expensive for consumers and businesses, global demand for coal and oil could peak and begin to decline. The research, led by Mr Ajay Gambhir and Dr Tamaryn Napp of the Grantham Institute with the Carbon Tracker Initiative think tank, suggests that energy companies, investors and governments should plan for downside demand scenarios.

Visit www.carbontracker.org/expect-the-unexpected-dashboard/ to delve into the results and implications of this research.

UNRAVELLING DIABETESResearchers at Imperial College London have found that so-called ‘junk DNA’ could play a role in diabetes. Some non-protein coding DNA regions in the human genome, which were previously thought to have no function, have been revealed to have an important regulatory function in the pancreas. Specifically, the regions regulate key genes in beta cells, the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas which help to balance blood sugar in the body. Professor Jorge Ferrer, Chair in Medicine and Genetics, who led the team at Imperial, indicates that this research could help us understand the development of diabetes and human disease more generally.

REGIUS PROFESSORSHIP

Professor David Holden is Professor of Molecular Microbiology and the founding Director of the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection at Imperial College London. The title of Regius Professor was conferred on Professor Holden for his work in infectious diseases.

Professor Holden is distinguished for his research on molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis. In 1994, he invented signature-tagged mutagenesis (STM), the first DNA barcoding method enabling high-throughput analysis of mutants in genetic screens. Use of this technique by Professor Holden and many others has resulted in the identification of thousands of microbial virulence and colonisation determinants and has had a broad impact in understanding of many other biological processes. The technique has been licensed to six pharmaceutical companies. In 1997, Professor Holden co-founded Microscience, a vaccine company which developed a single dose oral vaccine against typhoid. Using STM, Holden discovered many genes that enable infection by the human pathogen Salmonella enterica, and made important breakthroughs in understanding its intracellular biology. Professor Holden’s group recently developed methods to study intracellular bacterial replication at the single cell level, leading to the discovery of antibiotic-tolerant Salmonella persister cells – a cause of relapsing infections.

Professor Holden is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the American Academy of Microbiology, the Academy of Medical Sciences, and a European Molecular Biology Organization Member.

Professor David Holden FRS FMedSci

SCHOOL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: DEAN’S WELCOME

It is with pleasure that I offer my congratulations to you on your great achievement. As students in the School of Professional Development you have had the unique opportunity of studying humanities-oriented subjects in a science, engineering, medicine and business environment.

“ I will be celebrating with you today as you graduate and join the lifelong Imperial alumni community”

Professor Simone Buitendijk

Three PhD students are graduating from the Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication, with theses entitled ‘Creativity in the Malaysian ESL curriculum: Policy and implementation’; ‘Shanghai’s public culture during Japanese occupation period: Yang Jiang’s comedies’ reception and transformation of Jane Austen’s comedy art’; and ‘Gendering Egypt’s January 2011 Revolution: The state, feminism, and competing for the Egyptian nation’.

Seven students graduate today from the Educational Development Unit with a Masters in University Learning and Education, helping to deepen their own teaching, learning and educational leadership as well as being ambassadors for the learning and teaching community at Imperial.

46 students are graduating from the Science Communication Unit, now celebrating its 25th year. A recognised world leader, its courses offer a unique mix where serious humanities and social science critique is combined with industry-level practical skills in TV and radio production, journalism, exhibition design and web design. Its 700 alumni are working in all areas of science media, in policy, in museums and in public engagement, and are making a difference. Its particular style of teaching, which celebrates the collaborative and creative instincts of our students, breeds a particular type of science communicator: thoughtful, critical, imaginative. Today we welcome back the students of the 2015–16 cohort and we look forward to the contribution these talented and inspiring people will make to science-society relations.

I am very proud of the achievements of all the students of the School of Professional Development and will be celebrating with you today as you graduate and join the lifelong Imperial alumni community. I wish you and your supporters a truly special day.

Ms Giskin Day, Principal Teaching Fellow in the School of Professional Development, with Science Communication student Susan O’Sullivan.

Professor Tom Welton

Congratulations to all of you on your great success that we are here to celebrate today. Surrounded by your friends and families, who have supported you during your time here, you can be justly proud.

Number of staff: 1,419

Research income in 2014–15: £75 million

Number of students: 4,787

The Faculty of Natural Sciences is also proud of your achievement. Postgraduate study is not easy; it requires dedication, hard work and a sustained intellectual effort, over many months or years. You have risen to that challenge and you have excelled. I am honoured to have this opportunity to celebrate with you today.

In the Faculty of Natural Sciences you, our students, are among the world’s most talented, driven and bright. For example, Chemical Biology PhD student Alex Bond, co-founder of FreshCheck, and Grantham PhD student Florence Gschwend, co-founder of Chrysalis Technologies, have been featured in this year’s Forbes Europe 30-under-30 list (FreshCheck has created a simple colour-change system for food packaging that can alert the consumer when food has spoiled, Chrysalis Technologies seeks to treat and transform waste wood material into fuel).

As a community we come together to transcend departmental boundaries, pooling our talents to find the best solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our time. While you have been here, our statisticians have led the programme on Data Centric Engineering at the Alan Turing Institute and Professor Jim Skea from the Centre for Environmental Policy is Co-Chair of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group III, responsible for drafting its mitigation and emission reduction strategies.

As postgraduate students, you were a vital part of this extraordinary community. As alumni, your connection endures. I encourage you to keep in touch. Explore our programme of lectures. Make use of our alumni networks. Join the Royal College of Science Association. Give back as a volunteer or donate to support those who follow in your footsteps. However you choose to keep connected, know that your experience and expertise are vital to our future success.

I would also like to thank your family, friends and colleagues for the support they showed you – another example of the great things that can be achieved when we work together.

I congratulate you once again on your success, and wish you the best for the future, wherever your ambitions take you.

“ Postgraduate study is not easy; it requires dedication, hard work and a sustained intellectual effort, over many months or years.”

FACULTY OF MEDICINE: DEAN’S WELCOME

Faculty of Medicine

This community is broad, talented and diverse – its collective breadth of experience and knowledge is one of its great strengths. Throughout your studies you have not only advanced your own knowledge but you have also contributed to the academic life of this Faculty and become a key participant in Imperial discovery and impact.

Professor Gavin Screaton

You’ve been part of Imperial during a really exciting period. Across the Faculty, we’ve worked and collaborated to deliver really interesting science, such as use (for the very first time) of a predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus in pre-clinical studies as an injected anti-bacterial therapy – offering the prospect of a potentially important new weapon in the fight against drug-resistant infection. New interdisciplinary opportunities have also been launched, such as through our joint establishment with the Institute of Cancer Research of the Cancer Research Centre of Excellence, representing an outstanding new framework for bringing multidisciplinary strengths to bear on cancer understanding, treatment and prevention.

Achievements such as these are founded on the commitment of Imperial’s student and staff community to finding evidence, building knowledge and applying it to areas of need. As you move on from Imperial, you remain a part of this scientific community. We are proud of you and we need you. Stay in touch: collaborate with us; draw on our alumni networks; and pass your expertise on to support future generations of students.

But for now, enjoy the day! I congratulate every one of you on your success and hope you have a happy and memorable day here in the splendour of the Royal Albert Hall.

It is a pleasure to extend a warm welcome today to you, your loved ones and all who have encouraged and supported you during your time here as part of the Faculty of Medicine postgraduate community.

Number of staff: 2,615

Research income in 2015–16: £182 million

Dr Mohammed Aslam, Clinical Vascular Scientist in the Department of Surgery and Cancer, with a postgraduate student.

“ As you move on from Imperial, you remain a part of this scientific community. We are proud of you and we need you.”

WELCOME TO YOUR ALUMNI COMMUNITY

Congratulations on your graduation and a warm welcome to Imperial’s alumni community. As you cross the stage of the Royal Albert Hall, you will join a powerful and global network of more than 190,000 leaders, innovators and game-changers. This connection will endure far beyond the years you have spent on campus.

Wherever your path takes you after today, your life will be shaped by your Imperial education, the friendships you have formed, and your experiences here.

Imperial’s five-year strategy acknowledges the importance of our staff, students, alumni and friends in helping humanity address the changes and challenges ahead. We are fully convinced of the potential that a vibrant and connected community holds for both the College, our alumni and society and we are committed to helping you make the most of your lifelong connection with Imperial.

“ My career and time at Imperial have taught me not to be frightened about taking anything on. The reputation of the College travels a long way – when I mention that I am an alumnus of Imperial, everyone recognises it as one of the very best places in the world to study.” Ian Joesbury (Mechanical Engineering 1986)

Our vision is to continue to strengthen our globally connected network. Over the last year, working closely with our international groups, our senior leadership team has attended alumni receptions and gatherings in Australia, China, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Malaysia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, and many more events have been run by local groups for their networks. Imperial academics have shared their research and insights with alumni as part of the Pint with a Prof series and closer to home, alumni have attended events around the UK including the annual Alumni Weekend, regional receptions with President Gast, professional networking events, career workshops and reunions. Many alumni have spoken about how much they personally have benefitted from remaining connected with Imperial, their classmates and their local alumni network.

One of the key themes that has emerged from talking with alumni is the need to build stronger links between different generations, ensuring that recent alumni benefit from the expertise, career insights, knowledge and connections of alumni well established in their careers. In response to this feedback, we are developing a programme for recent graduates, which features workshops and events tailored to your needs, and we are encouraging our international groups to reflect this programme.

As you embark on the next step of your journey, do ensure you make the most of your Imperial connections. Opt-in to receiving communications from us (you can do that at the alumni stand in gown collection today) to take full advantage of the benefits and services offered to the community, and to tap into the wisdom and connections of alumni who have already made strides in your professional field. In turn, you can also play your part in building a strong alumni community through the gift of your time, expertise and support, to help both the students that follow in your footsteps and fellow alumni.

Ms Nicola Pogson, Director of Alumni Relations

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR IMPERIAL CONNECTIONTo ensure you can benefit fully from your Imperial connection and enjoy alumni services, we need to be able to contact you. Without your explicit consent, we will be unable to contact you at all after Graduation and won’t be able to inform you about the latest alumni benefits, events and news.

Please make sure you visit the alumni stand at gown collection today, or visit one of the smaller stands around campus to update your contact details, opt-in to receiving communications from us and collect your Graduation 2017 pin.

You can continue to play an active role in keeping this prestigious community strong and connected: whenever you move home or change jobs, remember to update your contact details and professional information with the Alumni Relations Office.

You can also access your benefits by registering for an online alumni services account. You can then activate your exclusive alumni email address (ending @alumni.imperial.ac.uk), update your contact information, access online

Dr Eleanor Schofield is the Head of Conservation and Collections Care at the Mary Rose Trust. The Mary Rose is a Tudor ship, which sank in Portsmouth Harbour in 1545 and was discovered in 1971.

“I manage a team of conservation, maintenance and collections staff, who look after our artefacts, monitor the ship’s hull and maintain the environmentally controlled conditions they all reside in.

I liaise with universities (including Imperial) and apply for funding with them for PhD students and postdocs to work on specific research projects, or liaise with existing projects where relevant.

My job also involves some practical work on the ship, getting all the safety gear on and collecting samples to analyse. The hull of the ship was sprayed for years with a polymer to reinforce the wood, and is now drying under controlled conditions. During this phase we have to monitor it very carefully for chemical, mechanical and biological stability.

Getting people interested in science, and not scared of it, inspires me. I like that I get to break down barriers and stereotypes of people who work in science. I love getting to work on something in science that people can really relate to. It’s great talking to people about the Mary Rose, and seeing them realise that it’s science and it’s exciting!”

MSc Mathematics and Finance 2006

Dr Alok Gupta left a successful role in algorithmic trading in New York to apply his data science skills to tech startup, Airbnb, managing the fraud and trust team.

“I knew that if I wanted to get into the City then the only choice was Imperial – I wanted to study maths and finance in London at a really credible institution. My thesis was with a partner in industry so I interviewed and then started working for BNP Paribas.

After completing a PhD, I went into high frequency algorithmic trading at BNP Paribas and then at Deutsche Bank, which at the time was the number one FX provider. I moved with Deutsche Bank from London to New York. When I was interviewing there, I dug up my old Imperial statistics notes and revised them!

Living in New York I started to hear a lot about tech startups, Silicon Valley, and data science. People had been working on the stuff we were doing at Deutsche Bank for maybe 25 years, and I wanted to work on ground-breaking new problems that no-one had a foundation in.

Airbnb was growing rapidly, but it was still trying to find its feet in the data-driven space. I now manage the fraud and trust team. I think about how people come to trust the platform and other members of the community. We’re developing new models to try to detect and predict bad interactions on the platform and in the real world.”

Dr Eleanor Schofield Dr Alok Gupta

From conserving history to treating and preventing epidemics, Imperial alumni are making an impact around the world.

Alumni and visitors enjoy the sunshine at Beit Quad during the 2016 Alumni Weekend at the Imperial Festival.

Clinical Medicine Research 1998

Dr Sir Michael Jacobs was awarded a Knighthood for services to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, recognising his role in the treatment of Ebola cases in the UK.

"As a physician at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, I lead a team of consultants to provide a clinical service dealing with infections. I’m also the Programme Director for High Consequence Infectious Diseases for NHS England. My role is to put in place systems and processes to ensure our preparedness for any dangerous infections.

Our team treating the Ebola patients during the epidemic functioned fantastically. We were trained and prepared because we knew that it would happen sometime. We didn’t know that it would be Ebola, but we knew it would happen. We function as a hospital within a hospital, with a big team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists and so on, and everyone was ready.

We knew so little about Ebola and we were learning as we went, using new treatments, things that had never been used in humans before. We had to disassociate from it all and just concentrate on the medicine.

There was a huge, courageous humanitarian response during the epidemic, with hundreds of people travelling to Sierra Leone to help.”

Executive MBA 2002

Olalekan Andrew Bayode is Senior Vice President – Pipeline and Portfolio Management at Iroko Pharmaceuticals, a global company that develops and commercialises products for responsible pain management.

“My first degree was in pharmacology but I was always attracted to the commercial side of the pharmaceutical industry and joined Lederle Laboratories (which then became Wyeth, then Pfizer Inc.) Although I had completed a marketing postgraduate degree with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, I decided to augment my knowledge with an MBA, for a broader base in entrepreneurship, finance and general management.

I did the Imperial Executive MBA program while I was with Pfizer where I spent 17 years in roles including Commercial Director covering Europe/Middle East/Africa/Canada, which exposed me to a variety of working cultures and practices across the region and globally. I then moved from the UK to the USA in 2007 with Pfizer, where I had the opportunity to work on more strategic projects from the global headquarters. In 2010 I joined Iroko Pharmaceuticals, a start up organisation, as Vice President – Commercial Operations, and the change has been refreshing and exciting after working for a 100,000-strong global organisation.

If you want an international career you need to have as much in your arsenal as possible to ensure your competitiveness. We now operate in a global market, so you are competing with talent from around the world wherever you are. I believe in seeing opportunities where they exist and being willing to take them on.”

Mr Andrew Bayode

Ann Collins is General Manager, Liquefied Natural Gas Origination at Shell. She is responsible for business development in Africa, Europe and South America.

“I’ve loved working on business involving different countries, being part of a truly diverse team, and the thrill of seeing a deal close. My toughest roles have also been the most rewarding and where I forged deep friendships.

I was President of the Royal School of Science Union in 1985 and I still have many fond memories of my time at Imperial, from black tie balls in Silwood Park, to ‘racing’ a raft across the Serpentine for RCS, to making a perfect monoclinic sulphur crystal.

My father studied at Imperial, so I always felt familiar with the College – but I chose it because of its worldwide reputation and I loved the London location. Imperial taught me that I could succeed if I worked hard and took some risks. My time at Imperial was a great chance to be among, and on equal terms with, a group of high performing and highly intelligent people from all over the world, which is fantastic experience for life. I am still proud to say I graduated from Imperial.”

Ms Ann Collins
