With 14 756 inhabitants Gafanha da Nazaré was a town of fishermen and workers related to “seca de bacalhau” (process of drying cod). The lighthouse was built between 1885 and 1893. Its original power source was petrol. The Lighthouse Having fun on the beach. Costa Nova – typical houses These houses are made of wood. They are small and were originally fishermen homes. The colours of the stripes were the same within the same family to identify its members. Oudinot Garden Maritime Museum If you visit this Museum you can easily understand how deeply our region depends on the Sea. An agreeable park with tennis courts. A good place for picnics and to spend time with the family. Once there, you can also visit the Museum Boat - St André. St André – Ship Museum An old fishing boat, now a museum, displaying ancient codfish catching techniques This house symbolizes the home of a rich farmer in the early 90’s. “Casa Gafanhoa” Barra Beach “Bacalhau” (codfish) The main industries of processing and drying codfish can be found in Gafanha da Nazaré.
