POSTER ANALYSIS FOR FILM

BY MARWA AWADH

Page 2: Poster analysis for film

The black background signifies darkness and suggests this movie will be dark, scary and interesting. Using this colour gives us the idea that it also is about one killer therefore there are no distractions to distract us from the main image.

The picture of the mask already tells us that this will be the mask used for the murders in which will be taking place throughout the movie. The mask looks haunting, ghostlike and scary therefore making us as target audience scared and excited at the same time.

There are brief words in this poster therefore making us again, focus on the picture. The repetition of the word “New” suggests we may be surprised at the events in which will be happening in the movie further on intriguing us in wanting to go watch it.

The sharp outline of the scream masks jaw is a knife shaped image making us wonder if that is what the murder weapon will be in the film and the overall haunting figure of the mask looks rough and scary for us as audiences.

The bottom part shows the name of the film as “Scream” the simple black and white in the poster is kept simple but the “A” for scream is changed to “4” in red writing showing us that this is the fourth film below this is also the date of when it comes out so giving us information on when we can go to watch it.

Black, scary, haunting background suggests it will be a horror the dark colours suggest it will be a satanic, ghost type films.

The eye is one of the main things that stand out in the poster its creepy and gives you chills from looking at it. The eye seems to be staring deep into your soul and the pupils black colour suggest it may be demonic.

The hair makes the eye stand out more it is creepy looking and covering the whole face except the eye and the pale white skin also further on suggests this girl as being a ghostlike figure

The name of the movie “The Grudge” is written in red making it more alluring for the audience as they want to watch the film. Also the red may mean the lady is demonic and could lead to deaths. The word “Grudge” also means holding a resentment or something that’s happened to you in the past and holding onto it leading to revenge at some points

The words “It never forgives. It never forgets” suggests this thing is dangerous and the use of “it” suggests its not human and further linking to the word grudge as grudges are not forgotten and this one is not forgiven either. This makes us as audiences want to know more of what the film is about and what has happened to this “thing” for it to hold this type of grudge.

The background shows a couple of people looking confused and somewhat distraught faces, however we know this movie is of a parody. Because it’s a horror and comedy us as audiences would want to be amused and know what will happen.

The characters are all sitting in cinema seats making it more amusing as were the audiences and they are somewhat replicating us and it seems like they are watching us rather than us watching them.

The words on the top of “I see dead people” suggests we may see lots of dead bodies further on we would want to watch the film to see what happens.

This as audiences is humorous for us as the scream mask is supposed to be the villain. However, the villain is also sitting with the rest of the characters in the cinema seats and is also holding popcorn and the mask although supposed to be scary has a smile on its face.

The movie’s name is “Scary movie” and it is put in bold to stand out for the audience however it is below the scream masked figure so our eyes aren't as distracted and we focus on the characters of the movie. The colour red also suggests there will be death, blood and danger. The characters in the movie although may have distraught looking faces they don’t really scared its more dramatic further increasing the comedic effect. The scary movie also links to other films that they somewhat mock gaining the audiences attention.
