Issue : 115 15 September, 2019

Need for an introspectionIn the last few months, there has been an increase in the crime

graph in the city. The rise in the cases of daylight robbery, kidnap-ping, rape etc. and the poor detection rate have instilled a sense

of insecurity amongst the residents. The non-chalant attitude ofthe many police officials, non-friendly image of the police depart-

ment and the difficult legal procedures have only helped in erod-ing the image further.

This is an era of specialization. Considering the competitive-ness that one has to face, success in any field, to a great extent,

depends on specialization. This adage applies to the police de-partment as well. The present day working in the police depart-

ment makes it imperative for the officials to carry out a wide rangeof duties, which in turn adversely affects their performance as prime

security providing agency. The police today have no defined du-ties, which varies from nabbing criminals to providing security to

the VVIPs to making bandobast for dharnas & community cele-brations, of which there is no dearth in our country, to managing

traffic, mediating in disputes and what not. It is because of thismultifaceted duty requirement that the performance of police is

lack luster. Limited force equipped with arms of the stone- ageera with unlimited working hours is finding itself at the receiving

end especially when the nature of crime is getting sophisticatedand complex.

The police alone cannot be blamed for this sorry state of affairs.

Huge interferences from the politicians who treat the police de-partment as personal employees, has also contributed towards its

poor performances. Transfers and postings make lot of news thesedays where merits rarely count. This has put a big question mark

on the working of the police department and there is an eminentneed for revamping the whole system especially in view of the

recent scam.

The police department needs to go in for specialized forces fordifferent works like for example crime branch, VVIPs security,

traffic department etc. The forces should be imparted specializedtraining in dealing with particular kind of crimes especially in view

of new types of crimes like financial and cyber crimes. The trans-fers and postings at lower levels should therefore confine to a par-

ticular branch of specialization only. Besides this, a significantamount of autonomy needs to be given to the police department

and there has to be a minimum interference from the politicians. In this revamping process not only the police department needs

to be overhauled but the public in general also needs to be coun-seled. The illegal migrants from neighbouring countries, the slum

dwellers, many of the road side beggars and urchins are also po-tential criminals and they need to be discouraged as prevention of

crime is better than conviction of criminals after crime is commit-ted. The working conditions in the police department need to be

improved and the police force should be augmented and equippedwith latest arms, means of communication & transportation. They

should also have better inter connection and exchange of informa-tion with other security agencies in order to enhance their perfor-

mance and also to improve their sagging morale.

The Navi Mumbai police department is presently trying to build

a public friendly image. This is heartening and is certainly the needof the hour. This will help in strengthening the much desired faith

of the public in the police department. Without public joining handswith the police department, crime cannot be controlled. The pub-

lic on their part should come forward bravely with complaints aswell as with information. The night patrolling exercise should be

started for all the sectors to check the growing petty crime. Itshould be the endeavor of each one of us to make Navi Mumbai a

crime free society.

Masterstroke – The road less travelled

By Dr. Monica Khanna

Competition isslowly taking over pas-sion, and survival ofthe fittest ensures thatpeople strive to stayahead in the rat race. Whether they are gen-uinely interested in therace or not is immate-rial – their target isonly to be the first toreach the end point.

In a world that isdriven by the need tooutdo others, there arealso a few exceptions –those who begin therace, but realize mid-way that they are onthe wrong track, com-peting with the wrongpeople… those thatcreate a new track forthemselves, and sprinttheir way to the end-point, without fear ofwhat lies ahead.

ways wanted to studyart, but the belief thatart could only be a hob-by and not a lucrativeprofession, resulted inher opting for a degreein Chartered Accoun-tancy. However, shesoon realized that this

did not interest her inthe least. Yet, sheworked as a tax con-sultant for two years, and after marriage, went on to help herhusband with herbusiness. The desire togo back to her first loveprompted her to joinart classes, and shewas soon ready to putup an exhibition. Butit was only post-deliv-ery, with tremendoussupport and encour-

agement from her hus-band and in-laws, thatshe was able to im-merse herself whole-heartedly in what shehad always wanted todo.

She had seen pebbleart in Europe and had

been wanting to exper-iment with it. Sudden-ly an opportunity land-ed itself on her lap. Shehad to put up a stall inher daughter’s schoolfor an art mela and de-cided to explore the pos-sibility of innovatingwith pebbles. The nov-elty of the concept at-tracted people. It wasa product that could becustomized to suit theoccasion and the per-son for whom the gift

was intended. It wasunique, personalized, and not available in astore – hence could notbe replicated.

She launched herbrand Brushes-

tostrokes just beforeValentine’s Day thisyear, and soon expand-ed her range of prod-ucts to include fairygardens for children, miniature gardens,Zen gardens and deskplanters. With liveplants and miniatureelements, these alsogained popularity in ashort span of time, and

she started getting re-quests to conductworkshops and events.Social media helpedpromote her work, andword-to-mouth gaveher immense recogni-

tion. From pre-schoolsto cafés, kitty partiesand birthdays for chil-dren as well as seniorcitizens, Aarti foundherself in great de-mand. With pricesranging from Rs. 500to Rs. 10,000, peoplecould choose productsthat fit their budget. Moreover, through theworkshops, they could

also learn to make thegardens and plantersthemselves – thusmaking the gift evenmore special and per-sonal.

In less than a year, there has been expo-nential growth. Whatwas once a hobby anda passion is now a full-fledged entrepreneur-ial venture, with im-mense future potentialfor expansion and di-versification. Had Aar-ti continued as a taxconsultant, she wouldhave probably had anaverage innings butwould eventually havebeen bowled out be-cause she was neverinterested in the gamein the first place. To-day, however, she is apowerful queen in thegame of chess – andcan move in all direc-tions at her own will.As Robert Frost right-ly said, “Two roads di-verged in the woodsand I, I took the oneless travelled by. Andthat has made all thedifference.” Innova-tions can never takeplace by merely follow-ing the trend – oneneeds to create newpaths and walk on un-trodden territories toreach the peaks of suc-cess.

Inspire : Universal brotherhood dayUniversal Brotherhood Day 2019 marks 126 years since Swami Vivekananda’s

iconic Chicago speech that propagated religious tolerance, harmony.

By Dr Vandana Mahajani

11 September is cel-ebrated as Universalbrotherhood day. It wason this day that Vive-kananda addressed agathering of 5000 peo-ple in the year 1893. Itwas the first World’sParliament of Religionsand it was held from 11to 27 September 1893where delegates fromall over the world joinedthis Parliament. Hediscarded the idea ofreligious supremacyand propagated a mes-sage of not only mutu-

al tolerance but alsoreligious acceptance.Let us read what Swa-miji said.

Sisters and Broth-ers of America, It fillsmy heart with joy un-speakable to rise in re-sponse to the warm andcordial welcome whichyou have given us. Ithank you in the nameof the most ancient or-der of monks in theworld; I thank you inthe name of the moth-er of religions; and Ithank you in the nameof the millions and mil-lions of Hindu people ofall classes and sects.

My thanks, also, tosome of the speakers onthis platform who, re-ferring to the delegatesfrom the Orient, have

told you that these menfrom far-off nationsmay well claim the ho-nour of bearing to dif-ferent lands the idea oftoleration. I am proudto belong to a religionwhich has taught theworld both toleranceand universal accep-tance. We believe notonly in universal toler-ation, but we accept allreligions as true. I amproud to belong to anation which has shel-tered the persecutedand the refugees of allreligions and all na-tions of the earth. I amproud to tell you thatwe have gathered inour bosom the purestremnant of the Israel-ites, who came tosouthern India and took

refuge with us in thevery year in whichtheir holy temple wasshattered to pieces byRoman tyranny. I amproud to belong to thereligion which has shel-tered and is still foster-ing the remnant of thegrand Zoroastrian na-tion. I will quote to you, brethren, a few linesfrom a hymn which Iremember to have re-peated from my earliestboyhood, which is everyday repeated by mil-lions of human beings:‘As the differentstreams having theirsources in differentplaces all mingle theirwater in the sea, so, OLord, the differentpaths which men takethrough different ten-

dencies, various thoughthey appear, crooked orstraight, all lead toThee.’

The present conven-tion, which is one of themost august assem-blies ever held, is in it-self a vindication, a dec-laration to the world, ofthe wonderful doctrinepreached in the Gita:‘Whosoever comes toMe, through whatsoev-er form, I reach him; allmen are strugglingthrough paths which inthe end lead to Me.’ Sec-tarianism, bigotry, andits horrible descendant, fanaticism, have longpossessed this beautifulearth. They have filledthe earth with violence, drenched it often andoften with human

blood, destroyed civili-zation, and sent wholenations to despair. Hadit not been for thesehorrible demons, hu-man society would befar more advanced thanit is now. But their timeis come; and I fervent-ly hope that the bellthat tolled this morn-ing in honour of thisconvention may be thedeath-knell of all fanat-icism, of all persecu-tions with the sword orwith the pen, and of alluncharitable feelingsbetween persons wend-ing their way to thesame goal.Dr Vandana Mahajani

RECIPES By Jubel D’Cruz

Potato ChopsIngredients:

3 cups potatoes, boiled, skinned andmashed smooth withsalt

300 grams beefmince

4 large onions,chopped finely

3 green chillies, de-seeded and chopped fine-ly

6 garlic cloves,chopped finely

1-inch fresh ginger, chopped finely2 tablespoons fresh coriander leaves, chopped finely1 tablespoon fresh mint, chopped finelyJuice of one lemonOil for fryingBreadcrumbs2 eggs, beaten lightlySalt and pepper to tasteMethod: Heat a tablespoon of oil in a frying pan and add the chopped

onions. Fry the onions until they turn a little brown. Now add the ginger, garlic, green chillies and continue to fry the mixture until fragrant forabout two to three minutes. Turn up the heat. Now add the minced meat, salt and pepper to taste and fry the meat until it turns brown lightly.Lower the heat and continue to cook the meat until all the water releasedhas evaporated. When cooked through, remove from the heat and tosswith the herbs and lemon juice. Set aside to cool until needed.

Take a portion of the cooled mashed potato (about the size of a pingpong ball) and flatten it to form the shape of your palm (it should be about¼ inch thick). If the potato is too sticky, grease your palm with some oil.Cup your palm a little to form a pocket. Add a tablespoon and a half of thecooled meat mixture to the centre of the flattened potato pocket. Enclosethe filling by drawing up the sides of the potato and cover the fillingcompletely so no minced meat is visible. Continue the same process withthe rest of the mashed potato and mince. Heat a generous amount of oil ina wide frying pan. Roll each of the potato chops in some egg and thenbreadcrumbs before frying until the each potato chop is golden brown.Serve hot with a side salad or home-made chilli sauce.

Rice Kanji CurryIngredients:

350 grams prawns1 small brinjal2 drumsticks1 medium-sized onion, cut thickA few pumpkin pieces, cut into squares3 cups rice kanji water2 tsp tamarind juice

Masala to grind:

1 bunch fresh coriander leaves5 flakes garlic¼ inch ginger4 green chillies¼ tsp jeera¼ tsp dry coriander seedsMETHOD: Cut the vegetables. Wash and place them in a vessel with

the slice onions and prawns.Add 3 cups of rice kanji water. Let it cook. When nearly cooked, put

the ground masala, tamarind juice and let it boil for some time. Putdown from the fire and serve warm with white rice.

Ashwin lookingfor a comeback

Ashwin’s forte with the ball is that he can openthe bowling attack with the new ball and troublethe openers of the opposition from the word go. Hecan flight and float the ball with regular consistency and hit the deckwith accuracy. He provides the break through for the team when it isneeded. He plays a key role in the scheme of things and did trouble world’sgreatest batsmen Sangakkara and Williamson repeatedly and he is ademon for left hand batsmen. He is an enigma in the side.

Let us first think about the time when he used to play all 3 formats. That was when he had the backing of MS Dhoni who believed in him andAshwin delivered. But after MS. Dhoni retired from captaincy and Kohlitook over. Kohli did not have the kind of persistence that was needed withhim and always wanted quick results. His performance at the same timewas outstanding in the home series but deteriorated badly in overseascountries the reason being he tried way too many variations other thanoff spin.

Nearly every 3–4 balls in an over he used the carrom ball even thoughit was meant just for deceiving the batsmen. It is rare that we see an offbreak bowler try to bowl everything other than off spin and thus he wasdropped from squad along with Jadeja after Champions trophy and theywere replaced by Chahal and Kuldeep. While Jadeja has succeeded tocomeback in both T-20 and ODI squad with his satisfactory performanc-es, Ashwin is not allowed in cementing his place. Having said that I stillbelieve he is a great all rounder in tests and with time, if he performs welland tries to concentrate more on off spin than his other variations, hemight even can make a comeback in ODI and T-20 squads. Kohli ignoredhim for the two test series in West Indies but that is not good for Indiancricket. Change of captaincy affected the career of Ashwin to a great ex-tent. But he is sure to succeed at the highest level in all the three formatsof the game. He has vast county experience to his credit to back him.

Ashwin’s 342 wickets in 65 test matches is a testimony for consisten-cy and there is no recommendation required for his bowling skills and heis a captaincy material as well. Now it is up to him to improve his battingskills and play a positive role in the scheme of things of skipper ViratKohli. Any way making a comeback is the best thing that can happen inthe career of a cricket player.
