There are facilities, schools, companies, and non-profits whose sole objective it to mine for this data for various uses. Much like the spelunker seeking adventure and infor- mation inside caves, data min- ing can provide information to turn an ordinary trip into a memorable experience. I am a writer and a pho- tographer. My career allows me to travel extensively. I am fortunate in that regard. With an assignment that takes me to northern Mississippi to shoot several properties as well as cover an Ole Miss baseball game, I decided to add a little more to the trip. I wanted to find out what was around that location. I wanted to know if there is anything that me being from the Carolinas would not know about, but should. I went min- ing for data. Instead of searching for information on where to hunt mountain lion from horseback and gaining a location to work from there, I wanted to find out was there any outdoors activity special to a certain location, specifically around Oxford, Mississippi. Specific searches are tough to narrow down in this re- gard. If I were to search for turkey hunting near Oxford for instance, it likely would not identify as to whether there is anything special about hunting turkey there, rather it would likely give me a few pub- lic lands, maybe a few guides, and some information from the department of natural resources. Broad searches are the key to finding that special something that you would miss otherwise. For instance, I searched both hunting Missis- sippi and fishing Mississippi. The fishing keyword led me to a few more informative leads. Of course results showed plenty of salt water action, which then caused me to nar- row it down a little further. Once I keyed in on freshwater, then plenty of bass fishing links popped up. Information on catfish was prevalent. Al- ligator gar stories and videos was also available. I narrowed the searches a little tighter. And that is where I found it. Story after story, link after link, post after post all offered the same information. I had found an outdoors activity to include with my work while 700 miles from home. Northern Mississippi and Alabama are not only great places to fish for largemouth bass, but the crappie fishing is top shelf. The area is even known as the ‘Crappie Capital of the World.’ Following up on what I was reading, I checked the International Game Fish Association website for re- cords. Line class after line class record all pointed to the area as being a prime spot for trophy sized crappie. And I know how to fish for crappie. The point being, without seeking for the information in a specific manner, I may have never known about the world class crappie fishing in that area. In North Carolina, we take for granted the knowledge of the striper spawning in the Roanoke River. But for some- one from say, Mississippi, they may never have heard of the ‘Rockfish Capital of the World.’ We know with each cast on our coast there is a chance of a red drum weighing over 50 pounds hooking on. But a visitor from New England probably would not. However, with a little data mining, we can possibly en- hance our adventures expo- nentially. –Bill Howard is a lifelong North Carolina resident and hunter. We are in a time in which information is abundant. Our government monitors infor-mation to determine threats to our country. Internet search engines monitor keywords typed as well as websites browsed to better market their advertisers towards the user. There are facilities, schools, companies, and non-profits whose sole objective it to mine for this data for various uses.

Much like the spelunker seeking adventure and infor-mation inside caves, data min-ing can provide information to turn an ordinary trip into a memorable experience.

I am a writer and a pho-tographer.

I went min-ing for data.

Instead of searching for information on where to hunt mountain lion from horseback and gaining a location to work from there, I wanted to find out was there any outdoors activity special to a certain location, specifically around

Grizzle in.Hoggard (10-6, 3-4) got a run

back in the top of the sixth on a towering home run to right-center by junior Aleah Thompson, and scored once in the bottom of the seventh on a single, a passed ball, and an-other single but a nifty double play, cutting down a runner at third on a perfect throw by Grizzle after a fly ball, ended the game.

Topsail got single runs in both the top of the sixth and the seventh. Bizzell knocked in Danielle Parks in the sixth, and Laster scored Grizzle in the seventh.

Laster was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBIs. Grizzle was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, and two RBIs.

“They were throwing out-side where I like it, and I can hit it,” Laster said. “We knew this game was very important because we came here unde-feated (in conference) and we wanted to keep it that way. Since I moved here (from Ten-nessee) I’ve been hearing they are one of our big rivals so I figured, ‘Let’s do it.’”

White had four hits – three triples and a single – and knocked in three runs while scoring three times, Laster had two hits, and Bizzell two hits to lead Topsail to a 13-3 win over South Brunswick Monday, ending the first conference go-around and backing the com-bined two-hit, nine strikeout pitching of Lady Pirate trio Randall, Elder, and Grizzle.

The Lady Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a three-run home run, but Topsail bounced back with five runs in the second.

White ignited the second-

inning rally with a triple and scored on a base hit by Laster. Christine McLean, singled, Kyla Boyles reached base on a fielders’ choice, and Shelby Lisk singled to load the bases before Bizzell cleared them with a triple. Bizzell scored on an error.

White’s second triple re-sulted in the third-inning run on a sacrifice fly by Elder before Topsail put things out of reach with a five runs in the fourth. Bizzell plated Lisk with a triple and she scored on a single by Randall. White tripled again to knock in two, with White scoring on a base hit by Laster. A two-out single by Bizzell started the finishing rally with one run scoring on an error and the last on a single by White.

Topsail was home Monday against Harrells Christian Academy and home Tuesday against Laney, and will travel to Ashley Friday.

Lady PiratesContinued from page 8A

there the senior right-hander dominated the visiting Spar-tans until the seventh frame. Futch went to his new found closer in Treto. The senior struck out the side to give the Patriots their second win in as many games.

Fedoronko went six innings while giving up only one run and one hit. He sent nine Spar-tans back to the pine via the strikeout. Treto faced three batters and sent all three back with their bats on their shoul-ders.

Murray led the Patriots with a 3-3 performance that included a triple and a run batted in while Brunetti drove in two runs. Coach Futch ac-

knowledged the need for a close win after the team had faltered late in several games this year. “Being able to survive a game like this, where we don’t have a great night at the plate and still win is a giant step forward.”

The Patriots (2-9/2-4) hosted South Brunswick on Monday and Clinton on Tuesday. They will finish the week out host-ing cross county rival Trask on Friday.

Pender Continued from page 8A

pitched perfect ninth.“Aidan threw well for us,”

Blake said. “Last outing he got hit in the arm and had a little injury and he battled through that tonight for us. And it was good to see Bryce out there. I am glad to be able to pencil him in the lineup because he is a competitor, he’s always going to do what you want him to do, so it’s nice to be able to get him in there.”

Cota had surgery during the winter and missed the

Pirates’ first 13 games. His chances of pitching this year are negligible but he showed – as the designated hitter – he hasn’t forgotten how to con-duct business at the plate.

Cota singled in his first at-bat in the second, singled and knocked in teammates Hall and Riker (RBI single that earlier scored Myrka in the inning) in the three-run third, and singled and knocked in Riker in the game-winning four run sixth with his third base hit of the game. Cota was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

“Oh man, I’ve been wait-ing for this opportunity for a while,” Cota said. “I’ve missed

half the season and it felt great actually being able to help my team win a game. It was a good team win, South Brunswick is a solid team this year. I feel we had a little letdown in the sixth inning but we were able to control what they did and finish them off.”

Myrka, a junior, was 3-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, and two stolen bases, and Riker was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and two RBIs.

Topsail had a home game on Tuesday against Laney and will travel to Ashley for another conference tilt on Friday.

PiratesContinued from page 8A

won their first game of the year last week and followed that victory with win number two. Braxton Treto earned the win against Wallace with 3.1 innings of work in relief of Chase Norris. Treto gave

up five hits and one earned run while striking out two.

Justin Fedoronko led the Patriots at the plate with a 3-4 performance that included three runs scored. Riley Mur-ray and Treto each drove in three runs.

Fedoronko ear ned the team’s second win of the year, a 3-1 victory over Union. The senior lefty went six in-

nings while giving up only one run and one hit. He sent nine Spartans back to the pine via the strikeout. Treto faced three batters and sent all three back with their bats on their shoulders to earn the save.

This week’s top performer is Fedoronko. The senior showed his stuff both at the plate and on the bump.

Topsail was home Monday against Harrells Christian Academy and home Tuesday against Laney, and will travel to Ashley Friday.

there the senior right-hander dominated the visiting Spar-tans until the seventh frame.

They will finish the week out host-ing cross county rival Trask on Friday.

pitched perfect ninth.“Aidan threw well for us,”

Topsail had a home game on Tuesday against Laney and will travel to Ashley for another conference tilt on Friday.

won their first game of the year last week and followed that victory with win number two.
