INTRODUCTION
The city is often a totality of relationships and tensions that develop day after day; this process leads to transformations which cause a loss of identity and recognisability of the historical fabric.Crevalcore, on the contrary, is an example of town which preserves its own structure of ancient city thanks to an economic and productive system settled beyond the old town centre.The settlement of Crevalcore, which is in the middle compared with other Emilian cities such as Modena, Bologna and Ferrara, is a further incentive to expand the synergy between the old town centre and local industries.
TERRITORIAL STRATEGY
The study tends to the recovery of the economic, social, cultural and creative dimension of the city through a planning action starting from the launch of an external incentive. The common objective is to activate fertile relationships able to determine the development of new productive/creative processes, which can lead to a new vision of inhabiting, living and working in this place. The historical centre of Crevalcore could be the ideal landscape to host new productive additional in relation with the city itself.
What makes Crevalcore different from other places?
EARTHQUAKE, a reflection starting from the concept of emergency, intended as lack or deprivation of one of the main qualities of the human being.The house, intended as a place hosting the different human activities: domestic, work, recreational and aggregative ones.The project starts from these premises, that is to say the reactivation of all these procedures which are replaced in the historical fabric of the ancient city; through a modular matrix, the town thus becomes a new architecture.The minimum house module becomes the cornerstone of the proposal which investigates the concept of minimum living, first as an answer to an emergency (tent, container, prefabricated building), second as a driving force for a new settlement.
SOIL/GROUND PROJECT
In relation to the transformations of the old town centre the main axis, which is no more vehicular, is now reserved to cycles and pedestrians. Through the use of different materials and permeability, it defines a soil/ground able to recognise the limits of the new public areas, the road and the standing zone, by replacing the car parks in relation to the new configuration of the project.
COURTS PROJECT
By observing the historical fabric of the ancient city we can recognise the presence of empty spaces (courts, open areas…) which integrate the existing buildings. The project aims to value, to requalify and to preserve these places, by imagining them as interest points/points of interest compared to the new functional plan.

THE SPINE OF THE STREET GIACOMO MATTEOTTI
WEST EAST ELEVATION
DIAGRAM PROCESS
CROSS SECTION Ech.1/500
//TEAM NUMBER 1469
//IL CARDO SPINA DORSALE
Crevalcore city, founded in the 13rd century, has a particular post-seismic project situation. Beyond a simple restoration, it raises the question of preservation with a special care of historic memory transmission. This project will be based on a first observation regarding the important patrimonial value of the city, arousing an approach of preservation, and thus, of support. In a second place, the project will be intensifying and will reveal the city´s configuration and layout, in the archetypal charateristics of the antique city.First of all, The project will propose a global answer by implanting a vertebral column to the Gia-como Matteotti street forming the cardo. This one is composed by an important concrete arched structure enabling the structural support of all the distorted buildings. The classical feature of the arche has been borrowed for its structural qualities of crossing of long ranges. Beyond a tech-nical answer, it intensifies the cardo of the city creating a new wandering and a fresh eye on the city with a spaces hierarchy. The dialogue between the existing front and the project will enable to highlight and to agtgrave the current rhythm of the arches on the ground floor. Like a body living, the backbone will develop arborescences supporting the city.Moreover, the project will answer a burning question, the densification of historical centers in order to fight against the urban spreading. Indeed, the squeleton will enable to support light extensions, made in wood, put on roofs and will underline various horizontal strata of the city construction.The distorted buildings will be restored to welcome cultural equipments, media libraries and showrooms as we care about revitalizing the old center. The city hall building will be entierely rehabilitated to welcome a market place on several levels. The ground floor, open on the city, will create a continuity with the San Silvestro Church square, surrounded by mobile businesses. This central space will embody the forum of the antique city.This project is founded on a global process, adapting itself to specific situations, and may be compared with a urban sewing approach. It cannot be reduced to a formal or technical scale, it integrates the patrimonial, human, economic and poetic context in favour of the urban wandering. Plus, its evolutionary feature will allow potential densifications in the future.
