The two-year Post-PharmD Industry Fellowship offers a comprehensive experience that provides Doctor of Pharmacy graduates a unique opportunity within the medical device industry. At this time, BD has five postgraduate PharmD fellows in the areas of Global Medical Affairs, and U.S. Marketing.

Global Medical Affairs, Diabetes Care – Not Recruiting

Ed MahoneyPhD

Ed Mahoney is the Worldwide Associate Director of Medical Affairs at BD Diabetes Care focusing on Product Development and Clinical Evidence Generation. Ed has worked at BD for almost 5 years and spent his first couple years leading the Insulin Infusion platform. Since then, Ed has been leading the Digital Health platform for Medical Affairs and works with a large cross-functional team to add features/content to the BD Diabetes Care app. Prior to joining BD, Ed worked as a Medical Science Liaison in Eli Lilly’s Diabetes division for 7 years. Ed received both his Master’s and PhD from the University of Georgia where he studied Exercise Physiology and Metabolism.

Program directors

Fellows concentrating in Global Medical Affairs (GMA) at BD will have the opportunity to gain a unique experience in the medical device industry through their daily functions on the Medical Affairs team. The GMA fellow will play an essential role in the progression of domestic and international initiatives specific to diabetes care. The expertise of the fellow will be used to support the Medical Affairs team in a number of efforts, including: clinical trial design, publication planning, development of risk-management strategies, MSL activities, and literature review to answer relevant GMA topics. Furthermore, fellows in GMA will have the opportunity to advance their expertise in diabetes pharmacotherapy by participating in BD’s onsite clinic.

Teresa OliveriaPharmD

Teresa Oliveria is a Director, Medical Affairs-Diabetes Care. This position has the responsibility to provide medical, scientific and technical leadership for BDs injection platform. Responsibilities include driving the evidence generation, publication and scientific exchange plans. Teresa received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology/toxicology as well as her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Sciences in Philadelphia. Prior to BD she held various medical affairs roles in pharmaceutical companies including Merck, GSK and Sanofi.

Kevin FriedmanDO

Kevin Friedman is Senior Director, Medical Affairs – Diabetes Care. This position has the responsibility to provide medical, scientific and technical leadership for BD’s infusion platform. Responsibilities include providing clinical insight for product and customer requirements, leading discussions with external experts, and driving the evidence generation plans for product development and future marketing. After serving in the Navy as a primary care/aerospace medicine physician, Kevin has spent the last 10 years in various Medical Director roles at Roche Diabetes Care (2010-2013), Kimberly-Clark, Halyard Health and Owens & Minor. Kevin joined BD in August 2019 and is excited to be back in the diabetes medical device space.

Anthony MartinezPharm D, MBA – University of South Florida

As a Global Medical Affairs fellow at BD, I have gained exposure to a broad range of roles within Medical Affairs while also working cross-functionally to impact countless patients' lives positively. I have the support needed from dedicated preceptors to pursue impactful projects while strengthening the skills necessary to succeed within medical affairs. As adjunct faculty at MCPHS, I am able to precept the next generation of pharmacy leaders and collaborate with other faculty members on research projects. I look forward to further developing myself as an industry professional and being part of a company that has kept patients with diabetes at the forefront for over 95 years.

Matt Fratus PharmD – MCPHS University

“While completing my education in pharmacy, I was inspired by the team-oriented environment of the medical device industry and the work each person does to advance the field. Since beginning my second year as part of the team at BD through the Advanced Diabetes Care Medical Affairs Fellowship, I have adapted to my role as a fellow and worked on ways to make a difference in the lives of patients. In the course of my fellowship, I have taken part in countless projects related to medical writing, real-world studies, and promotional review committee. These experiences have provided opportunity for leadership and growth that are leading me to becoming a successful industry professional. Not only am I proud of the work I have done thus far in my fellowship, but I am excited to see what opportunities and experiences I will encounter throughout the second year of my fellowship with BD.”

Angela KuzmanoskiPharm D – University of Rhode Island

The Global Medical Affairs Fellowship in Diabetes Care provides a robust insight into the medical device field. My two years here as a fellow will offer the chance to work with different operations within the industry and medical affairs function focusing on patient-centric work. I’m most excited to be involved in the Digital Health strategy platform where I will be able to build upon the current BD Diabetes Care digital initiatives. Digital Health provides the opportunity to not only deliver more personalized care, but also give patients more control over their own health. Also, serving as adjunct faculty at MCPHS University will allow me to partake in research projects, serve as a preceptor for APPE students, and teach at the university level. I’m looking forward to seeing what this fellowship has in store for me!

The fellow will be an integral member of the U.S. BD Diabetes Care marketing team where they will play a criticalrole in helping shape diabetes care strategies, building tactical plans, and supporting training efforts. The fellow willgain extensive understanding of diabetes and insulin delivery and hands on experience applying clinical insightswithin a commercial function. They will have the unique opportunity to become a key contributor in an exciting, fastpaced and evolving diabetes category, where there continues to remain significant unmet needs. The fellowship willbe a 2 year program based out of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey in which the fellow will participate in and overseeprojects across the business.

Michael ShapiroMBA

Michael is the Associate Director of Value and Access/Business Development for BD Diabetes Care. He joined BD in January 2019 to help lead the US launch of a new BD Pen Needle and has since transitioned to leading Value and Access Marketing as well as expanding Business Development opportunities. Prior to joining BD, he worked in various marketing, market research, and sales roles, which he credits as helping to provide a strong foundation for his ongoing career growth. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Washington University in St. Louis and an MBA from Luiss Guido Carli University.

Claire is the Associate Director of the Strategic Customer Marketing team at BD. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, Claire develops retail pharmacy marketing strategies and tactics for facing with retail pharmacy headquarter contacts down to the store level pharmacy staff. She has a passion for her work and believes her varied experiences spanning, Sales, Analytics, Brand Management, Sales Training and Development, Sales Operations, and R&D (to name a few) have provided her with a greater understanding of the needs of our customers and business growth opportunities. The retail industry recognized Claire for “Business Excellence” in 2019, as one of the inaugural, DSN Top 40 Women in Business Making a Difference in Health, Wellness and Beauty. She holds a B.A. from William Paterson University and M.B.A., Marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Alexandra MaglarasPharmD – St. John’s University

I am thrilled to have joined the Strategic Customer Marketing team for my two-year fellowship at BD. The tight knit nature of this global company allows colleagues to have a broad range of responsibilities and collaborate cross functionally all while working toward one common goal, advancing the world of health. I have already found an incredible amount of support and encouragement from my team to get involved, ask questions, and explore new interests. During this fellowship, I hope to develop further as a Diabetes Care expert and provide value to my team and the overall organization through new, creative, and sustainable initiatives. This opportunity will challenge me as a growing professional, and will also provide me with the guidance, tools, and expertise to help me develop further into an innovator and leader, driven by the mission of BD. Amee MistryPharmD, RPh

Dr. Amee Mistry is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice and has been with MCPHS University since 2006.Dr. Mistry earned her PharmD at the Albany College of Pharmacy and completed a PGY1 Community Practice Residency with Walgreens and MCPHS University. In 2015, Dr. Mistry took over as Director of the MCPHS Biopharmaceutical Industry Fellowship program. She works directly with leaders in the area to continue to foster growth and development of the post-graduate program, and to assist the fellows in attaining positions within the pharmaceutical industry.

In addition, she is advisor for the student IPhO chapter at MCPHS, co-advisor for APhA-ASP, a national trainer for the APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization training program, and is actively involved with the Massachusetts Pharmacists Association.

Faculty fellowship director

MCPHS University provides an academic environment to guide and support the fellows toward a successful career in the biopharmaceutical industry. As a private institution with a history of specialization in health sciences, MCPHS University offers programs that embody scholarship, professional service and community outreach.Through MCPHS University, the fellow will have the opportunity to gain teaching and research experience in an academic setting. MCPHS University faculty and company program leaders mentor fellows according to their scholarly and professional interests throughout the two-year program. As an adjunct instructor at MCPHS University, the fellow will have the opportunity to:

Jennifer GoldmanPharmD, CDCES, BC-ADM, FCCP

Dr. Goldman has been a pharmacist for over 30 years and joined the faculty at MCPHS University in 1997. She received her BSPharm in 1990 and her PharmD in 1996, both from MCPHS University. She completed a residency with a focus in ambulatory care at the Boston VA Medical Center in 1997 and is a certified diabetes care and education specialist (CDCES) and is board certified in advanced diabetes management (BC-ADM). She is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacists. Dr. Goldman is currently a Professor of Pharmacy Practice and coordinates and teaches in various therapeutics courses. She has maintained a practice in family and internal medicine with a focus in diabetes since 1997. She has served on various state-wide and national organizational committees and boards. Dr. Goldman has been the recipient of the Long Term Service, Trustees Award for Teaching Excellence, the Preceptor of the Year, the Pharmacy Practice Teacher of the year and the Biopharmaceutical Industry Fellowship Faculty Preceptor of the Year at MCPHS University and has been recognized by the American Academy of Family Physicians for teaching in Family Medicine. She has received the MCPHS University Faculty awards for Scholarship of Application and Scholarship of Integration/Engagement. Her research interests are in the area of diabetes and the scholarship of teaching with extensive publications and invited presentations in these areas. Dr. Goldman has been an academic preceptor at BD since 2013.

MCPHS University faculty preceptors

Alissa SegalPharmD, RPh, CDCES, CDTC, FCCP

Dr. Segal is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice at MCPHS University and the clinical pharmacist at the Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston, MA. Dr. Segal completed her Doctor of Pharmacy at Drake University and post-doctorate residencies at the Medical Center at Princeton and the Medical University of South Carolina. After she spent several years of teaching, practice, and research at the University of New Mexico, Dr. Segal joined MCPHS University in 2007, and established clinical pharmacy services at the Joslin. Her research focus on the care of adults with diabetes has led to numerous publications on topics such as diabetes in older adults and concentrated insulin, pharmacotherapy guidelines for patients with type 2 diabetes, and book chapters in the Joslin Deskbook, Endocrine and Metabolic Medical Emergencies, and Geriatric Diabetes. She is the first clinical pharmacist at the Joslin Diabetes Center, where she assists in provider, staff, and continuing professional education, patient education and care, and clinical trials, as well as serves on the institutional review board for human studies and two of the guideline committees. She was also one of the first pharmacists to receive the Certified Diabetes Technology Clinician certification and is a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). Dr. Segal is also the Program Director of the Doctor of Pharmacy Honors Program at the MCPHS University’s School of Pharmacy in Boston, as well as an active member of the Endocrine Practice and ResearchNetwork of ACCP and the Diabetes & Cardiovascular Disease and Health Care Delivery & Quality Improvement interest groups and the Women’s Interprofessional Network of the American Diabetes Association.

The MCPHS Biopharmaceutical Industry fellows will be selected on a nationally competitive basis. Applicants must have

a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy at the commencement of the program.

• Candidates must have strong written and verbal communication skills and a strong interest in pursuing a career within

the biopharmaceutical industry.

• All candidates must have authorization to work in the United States throughout the duration of the one or two-year

fellowship. No visa sponsorship will be provided (i.e., TN, H-1B, etc.).

The MCPHS application portal (SMApply) will open on Monday October 11, 2021. Applicants must upload the following application

materials no later than Friday November 19, 2021:

• Letter of intent

• Curriculum vitae

• Unofficial college transcript

• Contact information of three references. References will complete a recommendation form only

All application materials will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

RecommendationsThree recommendation evaluation forms must be submitted no later than December 1st, 2021 via the online portal.

This is NOT a letter of recommendation but an online form that the reference will need to complete.

InterviewsThe fellowship program will conduct interviews on a rolling basis starting mid-October with pre-screens and will conclude

interviews in December. Candidates will be notified if selected for an interview.

On-site interviewsTop candidates may be invited for interviews at the sponsoring company’s location pending COVID – 19 restrictions.

Final candidates will be required to go through additional screening and onboarding as required by MCPHS.
