Post Impressionism - 1880's to 1900 Post-Impressionism is a term used

to describe a variety of artists who were influenced by Impressionism but took it to other levels

There is no single style of Post-Impressionism, but generally it is less idyllic and more emotionally charged than Impressionism

“Post-Impressionism is the term coined by the British artist and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 to describe the development of French art since Manet. Post-Impressionists extended Impressionism while rejecting its limitations: they continued using vivid colors, thick application of paint, distinctive brushstrokes and real-life subject matter, but they were more inclined to emphasize geometric forms, to distort form for expressive effect, and to use unnatural or arbitrary color.”

Paul Cezanne

Paul Cezanna set out to restore a sense of order and structure to painting, to "make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of the museums". He achieved this by reducing objects to their basic shapes while retaining the bright fresh colours of Impressionism

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh used colour and vibrant swirling brush strokes to convey his feelings and his state of mind. Although they often exhibited together, Post-Impressionist artists were not in agreement concerning a cohesive movement

Paul Gauguin

Pissarro, his friend and mentor, told him “look for the nature that suits your temperament”

“Gauguin's art has all the appearance of a flight from civilization, of a search for new ways of life, more primitive, more real and more sincere.”

George Seurat

“Seurat was not just interested in the way that the colors were put onto the painting or the painting itself. He was mostly concentrating on the science in the picture and the optical mixing of the colors”
