GTU Ahmedabad Campus, ACPC Building, LDCE Complex, Ahmedabad.
GTU has introduced a very new, innovative - Design Engineering subject in the 3rd semester of
BE program. It is a first of its kind initiation in the Indian Technology Education System.
Besides permeating the whole of the syllabus in every branch with design thinking, a strong 6-
semester spine of Design Engineering has been included in the syllabi. GTU’s Center for Industrial
Design is engaged in motivating design driven innovations at GTU. The Centre has conducted
a series of seminars/workshops to sensitize the design driven innovation intervention for 3rd
semester and for final year projects. Eight Faculty Development Programs (FDP) were
organized during the 1st semester of academic year 2014-15. In all, 590 Faculty Members from
115 Engineering colleges and 20 Engineering disciplines participated in these workshops. The
core of the FDPs organized in the year 2014 was defined in three parts ; Understanding of
subject & Evaluation scheme, Hands on exercises for the canvases (Empathy, Ideation,
Product development) & team to team mentoring, Preparation of Case study by video &

All the Faculty Members have actively shared their experiences with students while teaching
Design Thinking to them at Institute level and also shared students’ feedback regarding the
subjects. Through discussion we found that this innovative step of introducing Design
Engineering is highly welcomed by Faculty Members and students community in GTU. Faculty
Members suggested some scope for improvements to make the course even more impacting.
Branch specific projects could be adopted after 2nd year
Creating database of all innovative ideas of students and help them in protecting
them with IPR
Faculty Members stressed that the workshop was fruitful while they did the
workshops with students at stretch. ( min 3-4 hours together)
Regular meetings for subject improvement could be done at colleges for mutual
learning.
Students also suggested trying similar efforts in other subjects.
Midterm audit for DE subject to check whether it is running in all affiliated colleges as
per the guidelines.
Evaluation of feedback is more important to rejuvenate the course at department ,
