2 INTRODUCTION
IntroductionThe 16th Edition Hospitality Expansion Middle East hosted more than 150 hoteliers, architects, interior designers, consultants, and international solution providers, which took place on November 25 – 26, 2014 at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Dubai, UAE.
Seven years and 15 editions after inception, the Middle East's trusted deal facilitating initiative for the hospitality sector, recently gotten a makeover unveiling its new look and name, the Hospitality Expansion.
The initiative now takes place in several Middle Eastern growth markets, and this change has paved the way to enhance the brand's individual identity across its operating areas in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar under the new ubiquitous umbrella.
Following the subsequent increase in demand for hospitality products and solutions in the UAE, surpassing that of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, the sixteenth edition of Hospitality Expansion was held in Dubai this November.
This post-event report gives you a summary of the event proceedings, photographs of key conference sessions, full list of confirmed delegates, speakers as well as supporting sponsors and partners.

3 OvERvIEw
Overview - Day 1Day one started with a panel discussion on the future course of the hospitality industry in the GCC with a special focus on opportunities around 2020 and beyond. The panel consisted of an interesting mix of experts representing large hotel operators, owners and some new entrants.
Henning Fries from Al Habtoor Group initiated the discussion with his thoughts on the latest trends and developments in the hospitality industry that C-level professionals cannot afford to ignore. He said, “Dubai as a hospitality market has always favored the luxury segment and will continue to do so in the build up to 2020”. Laurent voivenel from Hospitality Management Holding - the company behind the Coral International brand of hotels, spoke about various drivers that ensure timely delivery of hotel projects and how various stakeholders can contribute to the same.
Philippe Harb, who represents the One to One hotel chain, spoke about the growth of Boutique hotels and their relevance in the GCC and especially Dubai. Tommy Ressopoulos from Time Hotels was very vocal about the fact that Dubai as a market will not see the growth of independently owned boutique hotels in the near future. Philippe shared some statistics and facts that showed a promising trend for designer boutique hotels that can cater to niche sections of the business and leisure traveler.
The second session was an interactive interview conducted by Bhanu Pratap Singh, the much awarded Director of Procurement from Atlantis – The Palm. He interviewed Mr. Haitham Murad, from the Al Hokair Group and Titus van der verf, the MD and founder of The Parker Company. They touched important topics like; responsible and transparent procurement and role of C-level innovation in next generation procurement practices. Titus also spoke about the importance of outsourced procurement and how it can benefit the operating company in the long run.
The day concluded with the first round of pre-scheduled one-to-one business meetings, with world class suppliers from different categories like F&B, IT, FF&E and hotel supplies – who discussed business with pre-screened buyers. This was followed by a gala networking dinner and cocktail reception.
4 OvERvIEw
Overview - Day 2Holley Chant, from KEO International Consultants made the opening remarks on Day 2 expressing her views on sustainability in hotels.
The conference then broke into two tracks, one covered F&B topics like attracting the right talent in the kitchens and impact of sustainable food on the business. These topics were covered by Sunjeh Raja from ICCA and Chef Cladys Magagna from Fairmont.
The other track focused on various ways in which technology has contributed to efficiently handle the day-to-day operations in a hotel and how it is being used to enhance the guest experience. Case studies were presented from successful implementation of the latest technologies in hotels like Kempinski Hotel – Mall of Emirates, westin – Mina Seyahi Complex and Rosewood hotels. Speakers representing these companies were Konstantin Zeuke, Leon Smallbone and Mohamed Mohsen respectively. The panel was moderated by Tarek Lotfy, the Regional Director of Revenue Management with the Golden Tulip Group.
The next panel was on sustainability and covered various aspects like sustainable design, waste management and sustainable food practices. Speakers on this panel included Muhammad Qamar from Rotana, Iftikhar Hamdani from Ramada Ajman and Cameron Mcpherson from IHG. The session was led by wael Farouk from Marriott International.
This was followed by another session of one-to-one business meetings and round-table discussions on a variety of topics. The summit concluded with networking lunch.
