    The 3rd Annual Edi�on of the Asian Women in Leadership Summit was organised on 10th May in the Marina Bay Sands conven�on centre in Singapore. Con�nuing the tradi�on, the summit was inaugurated by a Special Guest, who was Mar�na Veloso the Sportswoman, who recently won Gold in Shoo�ng Championship at the Commonwealth Games 2018 held in Gold Coast Australia.

    In the opening remarks she shared how sports has taught her hard work, adaptability and learning from mistakes. Being in sports she learnt that women are resilient & both men and women are equally capable and it provides way for forward thinking.

    Arvind Singh, Chief Execu�ve Quest ontheFron�er (the organiser) in his welcome address discussed the need for the AWLS pla�orm and shared that companies have specific ini�a�ves within but lack of a larger pla�orm was a challenge. Moreover, several companies have policies on their books but u�liza�on was the issue. He men�oned that this is not a women's issue but a business impera�ve. He shared that diversity shows mindset of an organiza�on, it helps in crea�ng a right environment. It is important to create a culture where everybody feels welcome to contribute & to grow & realize their full poten�al. Diversity is number but inclusion is the spirit where people feel included and par�cipate ac�vely.

    Rhenu Bhuller, Partner, Frost & Sullivan spoke on leading & winning in the era of unprecedented change. She shared that there is good representa�on at low level but it drops down as we go up. And men�oned that China leads in terms of diversity but there is s�ll a long way to go. She also spoke on 'Sheconomy' – how the economy is changing under the female leadership. Female CEO's have a significant effort on firm's performance and how they bring a different perspec�ve into corporate decisions that are made.

    Vinika Rao, Execu�ve Director, INSEAD EMI highlighted that percentage of women on company board is very low especially in Singapore and it would take two centuries to completely bridge all the gender gaps in the world in terms of equal opportuni�es and equal wages – at thecurrent pace. She called upon successful women to spread success stories and bring along other women with them and an ac�ve sponsorship is very important.

  • The first panel of the day on Unconscious Biases and Stereotypes was moderated by Sam Bedi, Regional Director Asia, Glanbia Performance Nutri�on. Yuko Nakahira, Managing Director, 3M Singapore ini�ated the discussion with her experiences and advised that we need to encourage each other beyond workforce to see progress in discouraging the biases. Also she highlighted the need to influence the percep�on of the parents. On unconscious biases within organiza�on, Charlo�e Thng, HR Head Singapore, Standard Chartered Bank advised that it is very important to build the confidence in young female while they shape their personality and career interest. She also suggested that there are geographic differences which need to be focused separately.

    Ee-Chng Tay, Head M&A SEA, JP Morgan said that in her career of 20 years very o�en she finds herself as only female in the mee�ng. She suggested for female targeted recruitment events for a bigger talent bank. Lyne�e Clunies Ross, VP Strategy & Ops APAC, Oracle on the contrary remarked that instead of focusing on geographical differences we should be aiming at the common problem on how to break the ceiling. When asked by a delegate what needs to be done to get more men, Sam suggested that it is important to bring men into discussion and if need be, it should be made mandatory.

    Post the morning coffee, the panel on Harness the Power of Networking was moderated by Dr. C J Meadows, Director i2i, SP Jain School of Global Management. She kicked off with asking the panellist about their best networking experience and story. , Director APAC Dr. Seina LeeStrategic Marke�ng, Janssen Pharmaceu�cals suggested one should be open about their personal feelings within their network for suggested solu�ons. Julie Raneda, Counsel, Interna�onal Arbitra�on Group, Schellenberg Wi�mer shared how maintaining good rela�onship within organiza�on and being connected with the key senior people outside her company helped her to seize opportunity to move to new markets and new responsibili�es. She further added that it is very important to maintain a good network as one never knows when the rewards will come back.

    Margie Warrell shared the power of her global and her social network and how it helped her with connect people in three different con�nents. To this CJ further added men�oning a report which says new men employee are be�er in making new networks within their organiza�on than a new women employee which could be a reason of a glass ceiling as women tend to be more cau�ous who to connect with. Stacy Chai, Partner, Fraud Inves�ga�on & Dispute Services, EY shared how she being a forensic expert has kept her profile low but in due course has realized that to need to network, one need to get to more people to have business, which jus�fies for your promo�ons. She suggested that rather than going with the mindset of networking you should go to have fun. Dr. C J mo�vated the women audience by advising them to stop thinking about how to be more professional to share their feelings with their network and start connec�ng with others as a human being.

    In the post lunch panel, moderated by Rhenu Bhuller Partner, Frost & Sullivan, Myra Eskes, President & CEO ASEAN, GE Healthcare and Sok Hui, CFO, DBS spoke about personal and organisa�onal experiences. Myra shared about how transforma�on has happened over 20 years. She talked about an incident about her senior sharing an old performance review document- a pre-printed which had only 'He'. Today she says this is simply not possible. She shared about the Women Network Hubs in GE opera�ng in different countries.

    On a personal level, she said that she always reserves a slot in the morning in the morning for thinking/reading and is very par�cular about this. Also she ensures a good sleep for herself. To the budding women leaders she suggested 'The more responsibility you take, the more people you lead, the more control you have over yourself'

    Sok Hui of DBS recalled about the previous two Asian Women in Leadership Summit and DBS representa�ons and men�oned the importance that DBS a�aches to gender diversity. She highlighted that in 20 member execu�ve commi�ee there are 7 women and that DBS is gender blind and promotes people basis their job performances. She shared about policies in DBS to encourage women to work during the family commitments like work from home etc. As a sugges�on she said to keep priori�es right and outsource whatever is possible to focus on the core, be it home or office.

    The next panel on Sponsorship and Mentorship began with Yogesh Farswani, Director Finance & VP Business Development, United Technologies sta�ng that Sponsorship & Mentorship is a Responsibility and each one should take it very seriously. Rana Karadsheh, Country Manager Singapore, IFC suggested that women need to be deliberate and be able to deliver projects to win the credibility of sponsors. She further said that one should never feel shy to ask for help and insist for recogni�on to get into the radar.

    Monique Pronove, CEO, Pronove Tai Philippines shared that sponsorship is foreign to Philippines and she had learnt her way to make out. She suggested women in workforce to be bold, and should volunteer for difficult jobs. Rhonda Wong, CEO, Ohmyhome highlighted that women should be vocal about the work, and the energy invested in doing the job. She further suggested that one should mark her own work.

    Smita Gupta, CMO APAC, Finastra shared her personal story about how her father worked hard to raise himself and siblings. She said that she was clear in her ambi�ons. She men�oned that a mentor can be of someone with shared values. But it is important that you also assess them while they assess you.

    Immediately a�er the a�ernoon coffee, Wanda Hope, Global Diversity &Inclusion Head of Johnson & Johnson touched upon crea�ng a Roadmap to Diversity in the organisa�ons. She began her keynote recalling the ac�vi�es of her mother figh�ng for Civil Rights of Blacks in US in 1960s which essen�ally inspired her to work towards diversity and inclusion. Later she shared various demographic sta�s�cs and men�oned that women have purchasing power of roughly 11.2 Trillion USD which can be leveraged by organisa�ons for their benefits. In a message to HR leaders, she men�oned that present job descrip�on which includes the words like Rockstar, Superstar, Ninja, Expert are essen�ally bias against women, as they tend to evaluate themselves more carefully, and such prac�ce is against the diversity goal.

    The last panel moderated by Lynn Huang, Senior Director Head of Marke�ng APAC, Honeywell focussed on Women Leadership in Tech Industry. She ini�ated the discussion with sharing the data about Diveristy & Inclusion in tech industry in specific and overall in general. Sophie Guerin Head, Diversity & Inclusion APCJ, Dell talked about a UNESCO study which highlighted the inclina�on of Girls and Boys towards STEM. It said that up to puberty, the inclina�on is same in both sexes while post-puberty it declines among girls.

    Kate Barker, VP HR Execu�ve Advisor & Global D&I Lead APJ, SAP men�oned that we are in 6th genera�on of workforce and each genera�on brings its own core values and we should respect them and take decisions accordingly. She highlighted that our present HR systems has biases and that efforts are required in that direc�on as well.

    Seema Mishra, Co-Founder, Pinkstripes talking from her experience, men�oned that women are resilient but in technology most women drop out around 7 years, due to several factors including removal of support systems, reduced resilience and personal issues.

    While Ajit Iyer, MD HR Worldwide Opera�ons, Applied Materials gave a different perspec�ve and said that as parents we reinforce gender biases. On the organisa�onal front, he said that HR managers do not look harder to find the women talent, and some�mes the women talent is not easily available. He highlighted that job posi�ons should be gender neutral in order to secure diversity.

    The event ended with people signing the pledge for promo�ng gender diversity in their homes and workplaces.
