Establishing shot

• The camera angles, shots and movement in this extract convey modern day living style, for example this long shot establishes the setting which we percieve to be Mexico.

• Also, the landmarks and tall skyscrapers hint that this is a rich area of the country and that perhaps it is a capital city.

Fade to black

• The editing of this extract shows the transition in time, for example the fade to black implies a jump in time and adds suspense and mystery to the opening

• This also signifies the scene or something has come to an end• The colour of the font stands out and is effective and also establishes the

production company of the film. The lines are compact and perhaps we need to read between the lines throughout the whole film.A motif perhaps as it may be a reoccuring theme throughout the film.

AErIAL SHOT

The flag establishes the location and it has come to the church which connotes that it is a key location throughout the film. Perhaps this could infer that religion is a key theme throughout this film

DISSOLVE EDIT

This shows that a lot of things are happening, and that they are in a busy place. This could also suggest that they are all linked together. The dissolve creates the illusion that the things are happening simultaneously and as a result creates a edge to the piece

LOOSE FRAME

The loose frame implies that the woman in the scene is lonely, and isolated. This follows from the man being taken into the car. Also, she isnt in the centre of the frame which could suggest that she is not the main character and that she is representative of the fear and horror the rest of the society is feeling.

TITLE CARD

This establishes the name of the film, and makes the audience aware of what they are watching. Also, this could reveal what they are about to see as the audience would expect to see a man of fire. The different pictures of the car and the female shows that they could both be important in the film.

CLOSE UP

• Close up shot of protagonist Denzel Washington, the first shot we have of him

• Costume- beard is unshaven which could connote his edgyness and his lack of care at his appearance

• Props- glasses may suggest that he is a hidden and secretive character • The lighting on his face is low key, which connotes his possible edgyness

and cynical character.
