Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival

(Eligible to Primary and Secondary Students)

Creativity Connectedness Conversations

First a bit of background… The Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival aims to raise community awareness, enhance mental health literacy and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and addiction issues in young people. The competition also hopes to allow primary and secondary students to connect with one another, enhance their help-seeking behaviour and provide the opportunity to express their creativity in a meaningful way. It is envisaged that the festival will continue to run each year to enhance the use of creativity in engaging and connecting our young people, in order to create positive conversations about the issues of mental illness and addiction problems.

…here’s what you’ll need to do

Students are invited to submit an artwork, no bigger than 100cm x 100cm and able to be hung for exhibition. Artworks maybe

paintings, drawings, mosaics, photos, computerised images and other mixed media art forms. A panel of judges will select the finalist pieces for the Primary School Category and the High School Category, to be

exhibited as part of the Festival. An overall winner will be

selected for each category and announced at the day of the Grand

Final. There will also be a people’s choice for each category. All artworks submitted to the competition may be published in a

book or E-zine. All participating schools in the Art Category will have the opportunity to receive a one to two hour long mental health presentation, on a negotiated topic, at their schools. This

presentation can be for the students or for professional

development for the teachers and staff.

All schools and/or participants will receive a Certificate of Participation from Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services.

Guidelines for Competition

• Your artwork should promote a positive image of mental

health or illustrates the experience of mental illness.

Prizes Each winner receives:

• Certificate of achievement

• Trophy

• Mental health resources for your school

• Mental Health First Aid training for the staff of the school

• All artwork entered will be held by the organiser for the

competition period and 12 months after the grand final.

• Judging will take place in September 2016. The winner

will be announced at the Grand Final event in October. The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

• Your piece must be ready by the 28th August 2016.

• Artworks must be clearly marked on the back with the

entrant’s name, school, contact telephone number and email (either of the teacher or the student).

• Artwork submitted might be exhibited in community venues, hospitals or galleries

• Whilst the organisers will take all possible care, no responsibility will be taken for any damage which may occur

during the handling process.

• Artworks that cannot be hung on a wall and/or that are not suitable for photographic reproduction will not be accepted. All submitted artworks will potentially be published in a book or other publication.

• All artworks must not exceed the dimension of 100cm x 100cm.

• After judging, the selected artworks might be on loan to us

for a period of twelve months, and may be further

exhibited for the purpose of mental health promotion.

• By entering the competition, entrants give their express consent to the copyright of their artwork for publication

purposes. Entrants retain all ownership of the artwork.

• All entrants will be asked to voluntarily complete relevant pre and post questionnaires to help evaluate the process of participating in the Creative Arts Festival and for other

research purposes as required (information will be

provided to participants if this occurs).

• Judging criteria will be based on:

1. Mental health theme (promotion of good mental health

and reduction of stigma associated with mental illness)

2. Artistic presentation – originality, craftsmanship, elements

of art (e.g. line, space, form), medium and texture, use of space, composition, unity and variety, degree of difficulty (appropriate for age and maturity level), presentation.

Suggested Topics The topic can be any specific disorder or a general mental health theme. It can address the promotion of mental wellbeing or aim to reduce stigmas associated with mental illnesses.
