When I last wrote we were looking forward to London 2012, and what an Olympics and Paralympics it was! New household names were created every day, with athletes such as Greg Rutherford, Nicola Adams and Ellie Simmonds, whilst more established names such as Sir Chris Hoy didn’t let us down! Who’d have thought, as well, that our very own Andy Murray would win gold? A fantastic achievement by Team GB.

But there was another British team that was outstanding: the Games Makers. International praise was poured onto this team of volunteers who were instrumental in making the Games the success they were.

The dedication, cheerfulness and enthusiasm that they exhibited is something we see on a daily basis from our own volunteers here at Waverley Care. Without our volunteers, we simply could not offer the vast array of services that we do.

For the 23 years of Waverley Care providing support, people have donated their time, passion and skills to make a huge difference to the lives of those living with HIV or Hepatitis C in Scotland. I’d like to extend the praise poured onto the Olympic volunteers to our many volunteers who make tartan ribbons, shake collecting buckets, carry out complementary therapies, and answer the phones, amongst the many tasks undertaken. Thank you for helping to make Waverley Care the success it is.

You can get to know more about one of our many volunteers, Jim, on page 7.

I hope you enjoy Positive Interest.

With warmest wishes

Grant Sugden, Director

News

New Glasgow OfficeWe’re wishing ‘Happy New Home’ to our staff, volunteers and service users in Glasgow as they settle into new premises.

The services based in our new office are:• African Health Project – Glasgow and

Lanarkshire

• Argyll & Bute HIV Support and Sexual Health Promotion

• Hepatitis C Education and Support – Greater Glasgow and Clyde

The move to the new premises is a very exciting one as it offers more space for support groups, training courses and one-to-one support. Twelve members of staff will use the office as a base for their support, outreach and education work.

Pop by to say ‘hello’ if you’re in the area, and thanks to the Robertson Trust for making this move possible.

Service User InvolvementPeople who are living with HIV or Hepatitis C and use our services have always had a say in changes at Waverley Care but we are currently reviewing and formalising how we involve our service users. We want to ensure they have a clear voice in the organisation and its direction.

Led by our Director, Grant Sugden, a forum of staff and service users are developing a service user engagement policy. A launch event was held at Waverley Care Milestone in the summer and, following this, new initiatives are already being established, such as a once-a-month cafe run by service users for their peers at Milestone.

It is anticipated that the policy will be completed and in place by the end of the year.

International AIDS ConferenceThe 14th International AIDS Conference was held in Washington DC from July 22 – 27, 2012. Held every two years, it is the world’s largest and most highly attended conference on HIV and AIDS.

This biennial conference gathers all those working in the HIV sector, people living with HIV and policy makers together. Scientific knowledge and developments are shared alongside hearing about best practice in prevention campaigns, and support models.

Speakers included Elton John, founder of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organisation. On the opening day the US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, addressed the conference. In a speech that received a standing ovation, she welcomed delegates back to the US as this was the first conference since President Obama overturned the 22 year ban on anyone living with HIV entering the states.

Waverley Care’s Director, Grant Sugden attended the conference alongside Waverley Care Trustee, Brian West.

Key topics discussed that were relevant to Scotland, were:

• HIV and ageing – the implications for people living with HIV as more and more people move into their 50s, 60s and 70s;

• Treatment as prevention – new research indicates that getting more people on to HIV treatment earlier will help to prevent new infections;

• Developing a cure for HIV – despite being more than 10 years away from a cure, scientific research is ongoing and making steps towards what would be a world-changing event.

Visit www.waverleycare.org/news for more from Grant and Brian at the conference.

Q: Why did you choose to work for Waverley Care? A: I have personal experience of HIV and have seen the way it has been stigmatised and wanted to be part of an organisation that fights this stigma and support people to live a fuller life. I also knew someone who had used Waverley Care.

Q: What did you do before you worked at Waverley Care?A: After leaving school I started working in engineering and did that for 28 years as a draughtsman and a design engineer. I worked in Scotland and then in South Africa for 12 years. I was made redundant and so decided to change my career. I went to college to study social care. My job before Waverley Care was as a Senior Support Worker working with young people between the ages of 16 and 19. The young people had various issues and high emotional and development needs.

Introducing… Mike Redgrave

Mike is our Community Outreach and Support Team Leader. His team encourages people to engage

in life in their community by offering individual support and involving people in group activities.

Q: When not working, what do you spend your time doing?A: Most of my time is taken up by the family; I have a son, Sean (12), and a daughter, Gemma (9), who want to do everything. I spend more time at football training than in the house. I enjoy cooking and this relaxes me. We try to get away at the weekend as a family for a walk and a picnic – anything to get the kids away from the TV.

Q: What is your favourite food & drink?A: That’s an easy one – curry and a Guinness, but not together. I like to buy curry now and then, but prefer to make my own. My wife keeps asking me to stop buying cook books.

Q: What are you currently reading?A: ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ by Erich Maria Remarque; it is the classic anti-war book. I think this is the fourth time I have read it and

still find new things in it to make me think.

Q: Where was your last holiday?A: Sharm el-Sheikh, in Eygpt, with the family. It was our first family holiday abroad, and it was fantastic!

Q: Who inspires you?A: Anyone who overcomes adversity and succeeds, recently this has been the Paralympic athletes. I am also inspired by Nelson Mandela, who has been true to his beliefs all his life. I was fortunate enough to be in South Africa when he was released and became President.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?A: Always a tricky question, but I will be nearly 64 and I am sure I will be planning my retirement. I hope still to be working in a care environment and trying to help make a positive difference in people’s lives.

DanielDaniel grew up in poverty and fell into drug use as a teenager, spending much of his youth in and out of prison. It was in his 30s that he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C.

Daniel was referred to Waverley Care by a care worker. In recent years his health had deteriorated so he needed assistance with day to day living, only leaving his flat for hospital appointments. When our Befriending Coordinator, Annette, met Daniel, he had very poor mental health, was unable to make eye contact and felt very isolated. His mum had recently died and her bereavement was the catalyst for him to seek help. He remembered her being disappointed in him and wanted to make her proud by getting his life back on track.

Annette introduced Daniel to volunteer befriender, Richard, to help him get out more and cope with his forthcoming Hepatitis C treatment. Daniel’s treatment took a year to complete and he had to deal with difficult side effects but Annette and Richard were there for him. He completed his treatment, and is now free from the Hep C virus.

Since then, Richard has continued to spend time with Daniel, both socialising and helping Daniel to learn new skills. The change in Daniel has been amazing. He is spending time with family again and has made new friends through his new hobbies of going to the gym and cycling. His next aim is to become a befriender himself to help other people in the same way that Richard has helped him.

Focus on Hepatitis C SupportAfter years of supporting people who were living with both HIV and Hepatitis C, Waverley Care now has a wide range of Hepatitis C specific services. It was in 2009 that we launched our first Hepatitis C specific service in the Lothians: Hepatitis C Befriending. As a result of their 2006 Hepatitis C Action Plan, the Scottish Government was keen to encourage more people to begin Hepatitis C treatment. Unlike HIV, Hepatitis C treatments can clear the virus from people’s systems. With funding in place, our new service launched working to firstly help people begin treatment clean of drugs or alcohol. Secondly, it worked to support them through what was a tough 6 month or 1 year treatment, which had a 20% chance of being unsuccessful.

Now, 3 years on, the service is supporting 40 people and more and more people across Scotland living with Hepatitis C are accessing our other support services, such as the Children and Families Project, our Self Management Programme and the Advice and Information Service.

July this year saw us develop our support further by launching dedicated Hepatitis C services into the Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS region. Focusing on education, prevention and support, our services in the west work with ‘at risk’ communities to help prevent Hepatitis C infections and encourage testing. The services also support those already diagnosed to start treatment, and get through it. Through Befriending, Life Coaching Programmes, Peer Support and One-to-One Support the services meet a wide range of needs. The benefits for those using the services include:

• the confidence to go for a Hepatitis C test and knowledge of where to go

• improved physical and emotional health

• being able to consider starting and sustaining Hepatitis C treatment

• completing Hepatitis C treatment and being free from the virus.

For more information on our Hepatitis C services, visit www.waverleycare.org.

Volunteer Profile

Volunteer ProfileVolunteer Jim Wastle is a regular volunteer with Waverley Care, helping out on the reception at our Mansfield Place office in Edinburgh and also doing odd jobs at our Milestone respite unit. He

kindly answered a few of our questions.

Q: When and why did you first become involved with Waverley Care?

A: I’m quite a new recruit to Waverley Care – this is just my second year. I’d retired and was enjoying the freedom but I’d always intended volunteering at some point. I checked out a few organisations I had reasons to be particularly interested in – Waverley Care, because of knowing people with, or affected by, HIV. I approached Waverley Care because they seemed absolutely clear about what they stood for and what they were aiming to achieve.

Q: What motivates you to volunteer for Waverley Care?A: I find it very rewarding to be playing a small part in the work of such a great organisation. I like the fact that the focus is always exactly where it should be – on the people who use the services. I enjoy meeting such a wide range of interesting people, with different ages, backgrounds and life experiences; and I’ve found everyone – service users, staff and other volunteers – so friendly.

Q: Why might you encourage other people to support Waverley Care?

A: Firstly, because it provides services and support not available elsewhere, and it does so efficiently and in a

caring and non-judgmental way, encouraging the active participation of service users themselves. And secondly, because it’s fun! Volunteers are welcomed, supported and valued. There are so many interesting opportunities available that you find you have to limit yourself.

Q: What are you currently reading?A: I’m re-reading a couple of books I first enjoyed many years ago – ‘A Landing on the Sun’ by Michael Frayn is beautifully written – witty, funny and moving; and the complete ‘Mapp and Lucia’ stories by E F Benson, which I’ve read many times and never tire of ... I suspect that everyone has some Mapps and Lucias in their circle of acquaintances!

Q:What is your favourite film?A: ‘Casablanca’, ‘The Maltese Falcon’, ‘Double Indemnity’, ‘Swing Time’… you get the picture. I went to a cinema screening of Casablanca recently, afraid that it would be so familiar that it would be risible… but I needn’t have worried – it still packed the same emotional punch.

Q: Who inspires you?A: I wish I could just name a politician (Labour, of course) who had a clear vision for society and the determination and charisma to carry it through, in spite of the PR people and the opinion-polls. Until one comes along, though – and I’m not giving up hope – I find real inspiration nearer to home: people like a long-time friend and ex-colleague who has always stuck by her principles and has always shown unfailing loyalty to, and care for, her friends; (I won’t name her and, if she were ever to read this, I doubt that she’d think it referred to her!).

The Edinburgh Festival has always been a time for inclusivity and expression; a message that resonates with our work nurturing a Scottish society free from stigma and prejudice. For 21 years we have rallied support at the world’s biggest arts festival.

£34,331.23 was collected by our green T-shirt wearing bucket collectors in the Pleasance Courtyard. In our 21st birthday year, we’re delighted that this year’s income takes the total raised over the 21 years to over £¼million. Fantastic!

Fabulous benefit shows were performed by David O’Docherty, Austentatious, Savage Theatre Company and Grassroots Theatre Company whilst Rhod Gilbert kindly asked us to collect donations after his shows.

Wonderful regular festival highlights, the Tartan Ribbon Comedy Benefit at the Pleasance and the Off the Kerb Comedy Gala at the Festival Theatre, played to sold out audiences. If you didn’t see the Comedy Gala, catch it on BBC3 as Edinburgh Comedy Fest Live!

Performing their fifth show on the Fringe for Waverley Care, the wonderful Loud & Proud Choir played to a sold out audience at Stockbridge Parish Church. Performers galore took to the stage every Friday and Sunday during August at the fantastic New Town Bar FUNdraisers. Again they played to packed out audiences.

Finally, Edinburgh University student radio Fresh Fringe, with the help of Pure Gym, challenged themselves to a 24 hour broadcast and succeeded. The picture above proves they were still standing at the end. A fantastic achievement!

Thanks to Arran Whisky, Belhaven, Barrs, Borders Biscuits, Drambuie, Highland Park, Innis & Gunn, Patersons, Stoats, T&G Woodware, and Walkers for sponsoring our Comedy Gala goodie bags.

Thank you to everyone who helped organise events, attended events, sponsored and donated. We’re so very very grateful for all your support.

What an August it was in Edinburgh! Over £100,000 was raised in one delightfully busy month.

Helping us celebrate our 21 years of working with The Pleasance theatre and comedy venue, performers looked back and told us what they were doing at 21. Visit www.laffoffstigma.com to find out what they had to say. Also see how a donation to us by T&G Woodware of (very Scottish) spurtles also added another element to the humour, and how Alex Salmond got in on the action.
