HYDROGEN HANDLING
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
Neptune participates in Nexstep’s Reuse & Re-Purpose working group and since several years in TNO’s North Sea Energy Program. The H2 pilot was the result of staying tuned in these initiatives.
Neptune is still looking for partners in the pilot. Exploring meetings have been held with electrolysermanufacturers, Distributions System Operator Stedin and nearby windfarm operator Eneco.
Way forward:
• Budget approval from Q13-A partners (TAQA; EBN; Neptune)
• P15-C/D operator to join (TAQA)
• Request for subsidy; being done by TNO and Nexstep
• Get pilot partners on board to supply electricity and PEM electrolyser
16
STATUS AND WAY FORWARD
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
Neptune Costs (+/- 30% accuracy):
2 mln eur for pre-study (Legal, Safety, Permitting, Operational, HR etc etc)
2.5 mln eur for platform modifications
Neptune receives 25% subsidy for the above amount
Not included:
PEM electrolyser and sea water treatment system ( to be purchased by TNO, who recieves80% subsidy) 2-2.5 mln eur
Electricy supply and transport 0.5 – 1 mln eur (trying to get Stedin and Eneco on board)
Modifications needed on host platform P15-C/D (TAQA to estimate and get subsidy andpartner approval)

TIMELINE
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
Short term
• H2 will be used as fuelgas on TAQA’s P15
• H2 Production: 200 Nm³/hr => 0,5 mln Nm³/y Natural gas equivalent
• H2 content in fuel gas is less than 10%; which is OK according to Solar Turbines
• 1,000 t/y abated CO2
Longer term
• Windpower far from shore can be evacuated via existing gas infrastructure to shore, and beyond
• H2 can carry part of the cost operational cost and enable tail end offshore domestic gas production
19
THE BENEFITS
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
• Windpower to be routed further inland:
• “IJmuiden Ver” with 2 x 2 GW DC cables potentially to Geertruidenberg
• “Ten Noorden van de Waddeneilanden” potentially crossing the Waddenzee to Friesland
• High cost and long term permitting
20
WINDFARMS BEYOND 2023; ROADMAP TENNET
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
• Hydrogen commingled with Natural gas to shore
• Can the conventional steam reforming process maintain the economic value of H2?
21
WINDFARMS BEYOND 2023: HYDROGEN ROUTE
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
• Vattenvall and Equinor: Magnum powerplant run on “Blue Hydrogen”
• Gasunie started up HyStock in summer 2019
• NAM intends to convert their “Gaszuiveringsinstallatie” in Emmen
22
WINDFARMS BEYOND 2030: HYDROGEN ROUTE
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
• Hydrogen form the Doggersbank to NL and UK via existing infrastructure
• 36” NGT pipeline has 8-12 GW H2 capacity.
• Pipeline technical capable of handling 100% H2
23
WINDFARMS BEYOND 2030: HYDROGEN ROUTE
NEPTUNE ENERGY THE NETHERLANDS
• Constrains in the electric grid can be solved by the gas infrastructure.
- Windfarms are being built further from shore
- Fluctuating renewable power can be handled by the gas infrastructure.
- Capacity of the 36” pipelines are about 10x higher than the biggest HV DC cables
- Comingled stream of H2 and natural gas is possible
- H2 extraction might be possible by conventional Steam reforming (Under investigation)
24
