CULTURE

• The culture of Portugal is the result of a complex flow of different civilizations during the past Millennia. From prehistoric cultures up to now, all have left an imprint on the country's culture and history.

• Portugal became an independent kingdom in 1143.

• Portugal is a country with a long history and a very rich national

cultural heritage.

FOLK DANCE

Many Portuguese dances are long-established

celebrations of seasonal festivals, including fall harvest

and the beginning of spring, and commemorations of

religious events. Local and national dances have drawn

from pagan and Christian traditions.

PORTUGUESE

DECORATIVE TILES

• The azulejo (tile) is the

most typical and widely used form of decoration in Portugal since the middle ages up to now.

• Tiles are made of pure clay, squares with sharp edges and irregular surface, measuring approximately 140mm x 140mm x 10mm

• When looking at either of these typical portuguese handicraft pots and dishes we really return to our

roots.

TAPESTRIES

• Tapestries are very traditional in Portugal and represent many of the Portuguese epic deeds. They are made of cotton, wool and silk.

These two examples were woven in the

beginning of the 16th century.

CARPETS

• The Arraiolos carpets are very popular in Portugal.

• They are:

- hand made,

- embroidered in woolen

thread over canvas,

- very colourful

- the themes are very

varied: animals, fruits,

flowers…

EMBROIDERY AND LACE

• In the decoration of Portuguese

homes it is very usual to see

embroidered tableclothes,

napkins,curtains …as well as

lace.
