    Desertas

Main Characteristics: Desertas are composed of three islets, Cho, Deserta Grande and Bugio and are located in the

southwest of Madeira Island With volcanic origin, Desertas have a long rocky and rugged coastline making them almost

inaccessibleThe Nature Reserve has an area of 9,672 ha and includes all islands and islets. The marine area is

divided into Partial Reserve in the North, and Complete Reserve in the South Desertas are one of the last strongholds of the Sea Lion. A colony of around 23 animals choose

Desertas to live In 1992, Desertas were classified as a Biogenetic Reserve by the Council of Europe, in recognition

of its natural and ecological valueSelvagens

    Main Characteristics:

Composed of two groups of small islands, Selvagens are located about

163 miles from Madeira and represent the extreme south of the

Portuguese territory. The most important islets are Selvagem Grande,

Selvagem Pequena and Ihu de Fora

It has been a Nature Reserve since 1971 and is one of the oldest in

Portugal. It was awarded the European Diploma by the Council of

    Europe

This Nature Reserve contributes to the maintenance of global

biodiversity: important nesting areas for unusual seabird species; flora

with some unique species, maintenance of fish stocks in the Atlantic sea

    area

Selvagens flora was formerly used for commercial purposes and now

    has an important scientific interest
